I dredged up one of the articles from the event. I have to say, sounds like he is a good bloke and the fellas must have a good rapport with him. I now really hope we welcome him into the club!

p.s. His kicking isn't far above Benji's and Benji only had a terrible run when Taylor came in as kicking coach and obviously gave him bad advice. How many did he kick under pressure in the finals?

I still think with Riddell, Benji should be kicker.

I agree, I'm more than happy to have a guy like Piggy at the club.

Tigers will hold a press conference at 11.30am tomorrow where CEO Stephen Humphreys will make “a number of key announcements for season 2011.”

Prev Next The man colourfully know as “Piggy” signed a three year deal with Super League side Wigan in 2009 however left his final year to return home and be with his mother, who is battling cancer.

Tomorrow’s announcement will see the former Dragon and Eel on a second tier contract as a shadow player for classy test star Robbie Farah.

Tigers prop, Keith Galloway said that Riddell will make a smart back up for the Tigers skipper.

“Obviously Robbie’s the main hooker (but Riddell) can play hooker, second row and kick goals which will add a bit of experience,” he said.

Should Riddell be required, it would relieve kicking pressure off Golden boot winner Benji Marshall with Riddell in possession of a handing attacking and goal kicking game.

The rake leaves the Super League with a premiership having defeated St. Helens in this year’s grand final.

The Tigers will hold a press conference at 11.30am tomorrow where CEO Stephen Humphreys will make “a number of key announcements for season 2011.”

Hmmm..

Lets see

A Sign James Graham
B Extend Lawry & Heighno's contract till 2050…
C Get rid of the puke 2011 jersey's for a more traditional WESTS MAGPIES and Balmain Tigers look..
D. Bring Fitzy back....AGAIN

I think D.

1\. Piggy
2\. Jerseys
3\. Sponsors

Also looking at our allocations there may be some news on the next phase of Leichhardt re-development

I would imagine any announcement on Rowdy's contract will wait until early next year

Probably right on the money there Smeg, it's logical.

Yeah jerseys.
A mate of mine (take this with a grain of salt) said he went to WTHQ the other day and chatted about it to the people there. They said that the alternate jersey might change a bit.
This fits with other rumours that the alternate might become a little more "wests"
hopefully they ditch the leopard print, wait… sorry, _Tiger_ print.

Wasn't there a 5 page thread a little while back discussing the lack of a proper backup for Robbie? And then we (reportedly) sign a near 200 game NRL veteran, just 29 years old, who still has plenty to offer and will come on a 2nd tier contract…

How is this not a good thing? It shows the club really is examining the 2011 season. Robbie is expected to play Origin next year, Riddell is a terrific fill-in for the 3 game series.

tons of tigers players interaction on his twitter account.

I just clicked the link from the Tele page

Hurry up 2011

The more I think about this, the more it seems like a good deal. Doesn't sound like a huge amount of money is involved, not in our top 25, plenty of experience, handy goalkicker.

I think he'll be playing plenty of FG off the bench. Would love to see him slot in @ 14 instead of a back who plays 2 minutes at the end of the game.

Has this purported press conference taken place yet ! There is nothing on our Official website about Riddell - only plenty of rumour !

On his twitter he says to Hayne that he hasnt signed yet
that was 17 hours ago.

But he also says to geyer that negotiations are going goog and we are a strong club.
And he is also organising drinks and dinner at Tiger Tiger with some of the players.

Sounds promising. If we are to secure him on a second tier contract, it's too good an opportunity to turn down.

I swear it's amazing how things have changed in a few years. Reputable talent actually want to play for the Tigers now.

Piggy could get stuck in mud

By Ben Horne AAP Fri, 10 Dec 2010 16:57:01
Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens has warned likely recruit Mark Riddell that he could play the majority of the 2011 NRL season in reserve grade.

Sheens is keen to sign the 29-year-old hooker as a back-up option for Robbie Farah, but has been brutally honest with the current Wigan rake about what he should expect.

In the event of injury or representative duty for Farah, `Piggy' Riddell with his 178 matches of NRL experience for St George Illawarra and Parramatta, would be the competition's best replacement No.9.

But in the meantime, with Farah an 80 minute player, it isn't so simple as sticking Riddell on the bench as a fresh reserve.

Out of respect for Riddell's talents, Sheens has felt the need to explain the very real possibility that his star signing could be spending weekends at suburban grounds for Western Suburbs or Balmain while he waits for an opportunity.

"If Rob was a half a game hooker like some, Mark would be happy to play second fiddle. My issue is, and I've spoken to him about it, is he may play premier league," Sheens told AAP.

"He's a big time performer, he played last year's Super League grand final, so his position being a specialist cover for Robbie is great … it could go good for him or it could go not so good in that he won't get much first grade.

"Just as long as Mark understands that could be an issue."

Riddell will increase his likelihood of regular NRL games if he can use his size to adapt to playing quality minutes at lock forward as well as dummy half.

Sheens admits he's not ruling anything out, and it's possible Riddell could even be accommodated in the side at hooker, to allow Farah to shift to halfback.

"If we did have an issue in the No.7 jumper that could happen," Sheens said.

"I've never liked moving Robbie before because I don't like strengthening one (position) and weakening another, but I think Mark at his best could certainly play 9 and Robbie could play 7."

Riddell has completed a medical for the Tigers and, once that's assessed, a decision will be made on a deal by next week.

However, in anticipation of his arrival, Wests have further bolstered their forward pack by re-signing Chris Heighington and Todd Payten.

Heighington has extended his contract for a further two years until the end of 2013, while Payten's one-year extension locks him in black, gold and white until the end of 2012.

Payten, with 247 first grade games, says reaching the rare 300 milestone was a motivation for staying in Australia.

"It's a big goal of mine. A lot of things have to go my way before that can happen. I think it's a fair achievement for a frontrower to do that," Payten said.

Heighington, a Umina Bunnies junior, had been targeted by the Central Coast Bears to be their inaugural captain should they be admitted to the NRL in 2013 - but his new deal ends that possibility.

It was also a big day for the Tigers off the field, with Meriton Apartments, owned by billionaire Harry Triguboff, signing on as major sponsors for the next two seasons.

No offense Timmy, but over the years you've seemed to love doing exactly that.

Anyway I think Riddell would be a great signing especially if the NSW selectors finally wise up and have Robbie as the permanent number 9.

In the above article, it mentions the possibility of Farah playing 7 to accommodate Riddell. Has anyone run that possibilty past Farah
