Marquee Signing

The only time I would seriously throw mega money at a player is when the player was a generational champion who was going to make a massive difference. A player like Munster, Cleary,Turbo come to mind.

Till that player comes along I would be trying to get value signings and searching for the best junior talent available.

I couldnt agree more

we're not going to sign any marquee players until we play an admirable brand of football that is respected by the league, develop exciting players that others want to play with, and recruit smartly to fill the gaps. when we're doing that, you'll have the league's best take notice.

Penrith did exactly that and while they haven't signed a marquee player at this point, they certainly will be able to take their pick very soon. while we've got some exciting youngsters, we're still at step 1. we need to tighten our edges and try our guts out week in week out.

Panthers won’t recruit a marquee in the next 5 yrs. they don’t have to as they built them.
Eisenhuth (who obviously improved the quality of their squad) is an example of who they recruit.

They won’t have the cash to splash

Just remember 2 years ago when we flogged panthers in magic round. They were stone motherless last. And from that point love him or loath him Ivan has picked up this teams level 10 fold.
Atm they have a necleus and they only need to sign players on like Eisenhuth and co. Kind of what the storm do down there. In my opinion they could dominate the next decade.
Now I think we should try and blood more of our juniors and work from there. We haven’t had great success with signings the last 5 or so years. Starts there for mine. But we must offload some rubbish in the mean time also.

We have 3 players who could become Marquee players if given the right opportunity, that is definitely not our problem.

1. Laurie
6. Doueihi
9. Simpkins

Is a lock in for the next 10 years if given the right platform.

EVERYONE else needs to go, its as simple as that. From coach to players.

I’m sorry but none of our players cut it.

Nofa, Leilua, Roberts, Talau, Brooks...gone.

Tamau, Twal, Garner, L Leilua...gone.

Ofa & Blore can stay...The rest, cya later.

How sad is it that our side is a string of has beens and reserve grade quality players.

Sadly, I think I’ve seen enough of those three to say marquee player is a stretch, they’re your basic run of the mill first graders, maybe throw in Twal too.

Those 3 are good players. I am pretty sure Laurie will never be marquee. Simpkins might get to that level. Doueihi may as well but he needs to be playing in the halves.

How many 'marquees' has Sheens signed when we won? BTW, Prince, Payton, Hodgson, Whaitura, Richards were all unwanted by their clubs!
IMHO, we need players that fill the holes we have, not necessary 'marquees'!

I personally don't believe in buying marquees as a sure-fire strategy, unless you are an already successful club. I don't think a single player will fix a club's issues if the fundamental issues aren't fixed - whether it be coach, roster, finances, team harmony, admin etc.

Just look around at some "marquees" and whether they turned the club results around, off top of my head: Blair/Tigers = no, RTS/Warriors = no, Ponga/Knights = not really, Klemmer/Knights = no, Pearce/Knights = no, Fifita/Titans = not really, Sharks/Johnson = no, Tedesco = yes (club already successful , plus Cronk), Cotric/Dogs = no, Foran/Dogs = no, Hunt/Dragons = no, Broncos/Milford = initially yes then mostly no, Ellis/Tigers = yes, Burgess/Souths = yes (with Inglis)

Understand your point..

I think we need to get 1 for a few reasons:
It would boost morale of us poor fans
It would create revenue through marketing / memberships etc..
It would assist us in attracting other players even if not Marquee ones
It was also assist in development of our younger players as he would bring that experience with him.

Not saying it would make us a to 4 side but it has a lot of positives to it and we also have the money available. You can only have so many young talented kids (we have a heap) but need guidance.

Sadly experience of a few clubs clearly shows that this is not necessarily the case.:cold_sweat:
As per jirskyr list:
- NZ bought Thompson, RTS ..
- STGS - bought Hunt, Norman, Bird, McColough, Merrin
- GCT - bought Fifita, Proctor, Peachey
- CB - bought Foran, Woods

In all cases they did not attract more 'marquees' and they did not become more successful.

On the other hand Roosters, Souths ..:rage:

Warriors got Tohu Harris who was highly sought after, RTS would have been a good carrot for getting him on board, this year signed the red hot rookie Walsh who was highly credentialled.
Saints have no trouble attracting talent, they just get the wrong ones for their club.
And the Titans, Fifita only went because they had Tino, they can attract talent.
The dogs, you are kidding, they have attracted Burton, JAC, Cotric in the last 12 months, maybe even Smith as well.
Easts and souths cheat, and we neither cheat or attract good players

Penrith were blessed to have so many very very talented juniors hit the scene at the same time, but of course Penriths junior pathway system played a massive part.

Your 100% right, once you get a quality group of players together, it’s just a matter of topping up your squad with the odd player each year. That’s why the Storm and the Chooks have dominated for so long. Also they have the luxury of not having to rush kids into the NRL and when they do get a shot they are surrounded by quality.

If only one day it might happen to our mob

Not sure on that one, Warriors I guess offer a NZ destination for players keen to go home, Saints paid massive overs for players who have not delivered..similar to us, and the coast offers life style.

On the other hand Dogs and Parra never seem to have problems jagging a signature, even when on struggle street. So I guess we should be trying to find out why

I think the COE will help big time as it is a professional set up and players even mentioned how bad our training / Gym area was and that it goes into there thinking when signing.. Also think we need to stop the 4 home stadiums and stick to the 2 at the most except trips away etc.. I only hear negative comments about all the home grounds and understand that is a revenue decision but it needs to stop..

Yeah, true...
They're inner city clubs with some good history and some winning cultures to an extent.

Despite some bad years.
We aren't quite at that level for destination potential for players.

These guys have some football smarts and will add some dynamic to the coaching box.

I hear what you’re saying , but look at guys like Jason Taylor , Seibold , and now O’Brien at newy. All supposed footy savants , who lack the leadership qualities to be a head coach . I think we should change the title from Head coach to manager , as it’s increasingly obvious that today’s coaches are becoming more and more like football managers.
And in saying that , they all need footy savants underneath them .Guys who can come up with the ideas , but lack that leadership quality to execute it in a game day scenario.

I think Madge is a manager , I also think his recent decisions to change the team around , and blow up our defensive structures , and fine tune out attacking ones , have to prove how smart the bloke is. Even if they weren’t his ideas . Sure he stuck to the “ up and in way” too long , but he has pivoted to a slide defence , and a compressed middle . This has to count for something .

Also whoever told Brooks he didn’t need to get through every gap , but rather just slide on the outside or inside of his man everytime , is really clever in its simplicity. This is made all the more dangerous with how Garner just sits off his hip , between the 2 defenders . It forces the defence into a no win situation.
Before brooks would engage his direct defender , then push the pass , often a hospital ball.
Now engaged between the defenders at the last second , like I said forcing the centre/half to engage him , creating the space for Garner , or Laurie out the back . At worse it’s an extra 10 metres , at best it’s line break city . That whole sequence looks to be coached to me . If it’s Millard or Gardner or Madge . It’s just real clever .

Brett is involved in pathways or development... something like that.

But it goes to show, the club knows he's worth employing...

And I was also right.

?????

Well they should , they did it once before , and if memory strikes correctly , it was Brett who bailed on us . “Due to family reasons” . Taylor was the coach at the time Or Potter . Maybe he didn’t want the headaches of coaching but liked development and 1 on 1 skill building . Win win for everyone .

Coaching:

Madge has failed us.
I believe he can offer the young guys some insight though on what it takes to become a first grader.
Welcome our new KOE coach: Michael Maguire.
I hope he enjoys the new role and understands, it isn't to break them but prepare them for the hard road ahead of playing first grade.

Head coach: the NEW genius coach
BEN GARDINER
By all reports this guy is as hard as Madge but can get the boys playing for him.
He will lead us to the holy land.

Assistant coaches:
John Morris
Robbie Farah
Brett Kimmorley

The heart broken lost son and the banished prince 2.0 return... again.
These guys have some football smarts and will add some dynamic to the coaching box.
Farah is too important to be running water.
I've spoken to Brett in depth and he's a Matty Johns x Cooper Cronk type. Understands the game and what it takes to win.

THIS IS HOW WE IMRPOVE ACROSS THE BOARD

2 thumbs down on this post.
I made the statement about bringing in Brett Kimmorley and a week later he's brought in.

Just wanted bring attention to this.
Another 1 in the bank.

He was the 20s coach...
He's a very smart man when it comes to football.
I guess he doesn't get the praise these other footy minds like Cronk and Joey get because he's not as accomplished as them but he will really benefit our club.

We're bringing back the right people imo.
Brett, Sheens, hopefully a few more to follow.

Welcome back.

Sorry, but I would suggest you got the thumbs down, for your suggestion that you wanted Madge gone and move the reserve grade coach up.

Pretty sure I didn’t “down vote” you, but maybe just? a bit. ???
