Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

I've lost a bit of respect for him, tbh. He could've honoured his contract and moved on after that - he only had to wait another year before leaving to build his family fortune and I'm sure he wasn't being paid pittance here, in any case.

i think that's what he was doing but our club basically said go now or never with the offer we placed.

"Putting football aside, JT is a mate. If he needs anything, I am more than happy to help out."

That surprised me. Classy comments from Taupau.

on talking sport today peter tunks was saying that the tigers had been shopping taupau for some time.

he said that they wanted a swap with nuassalla form canberra but taupau didnt want to live in canberra.

i know all clubs do this shopping players around thing , but there seems to be no logic in why the management did this.

why would he want to stay with a club who want to offload him?

whos next?
lets get rid of our other origin player- aaron woods.

what a fiasco!

Tunks is a tosser - its either his opininon or his opinion - nothing else is relevant.

Your career can turn on a dime, just ask Alex McKinnon, Simon Dwyer or Taniela Tuiaki. If you're in a position to get the big bucks right away, go get them, don't wait because you never know what's waiting around the corner. I'm sure the last thing he wanted was to be a cult hero like Tuiaki and have nothing to show for it financially.

Yeah good point. I'm probably more pissed at the clubs that entice and poach players, who they know are still contracted to other clubs, before their time is up.

I believe there are rules in place already to stop clubs poaching other club's players whilst still under contract but rules are useless unless enforced and the useless overpaid dweebs at the NRL are hopeless and just not up to taking on the clubs; especially the rich ones!

It's time that they stopped players and clubs from changing their minds before their contracts are up, Gus spoke about it a few months ago and raised the point that if clubs wanted to move someone on , then that player , should still be counted in the original Cap for the length of the Original contract

Clubs that can afford it can buy anyone this year and if someone else comes up at the start of next season, they can merely shop their original signing off to someone else and the club is free to buy a better player, it's another form of beating the cap.
It's the same as what's going on now with Souths and Manly.
Players who signed in good faith , are shoved out again , in some cases within months of resigning ( e.g. Ballin, signed with Manly then within about two months was told that he was going.
The same applies to players who want to leave early. There should be some compensation if a player wants to leave a club early.
Supporters should know that if a player is signed for 2 or 3 yrs, he will be there for that amount of time.
And clubs will have to stop signing and then dumping the prematurely .
And it will give other clubs the chance of picking up some players that otherwise would be grabbed by the wealthy( if their cap is full already)
It's getting ridiculous.
The latest fiasco , is Souths signing Burgess ( who they can't fit into their cap, then trying to shop Walker to anyone who would bite, then after Walker had worked out a deal with Manly( who were probably going to have to kick out more players to get him)
The Coach returns and tells Walker that he's not going anywhere.
The game is making itself look stupid , over and over again.
Either make contracts mean something again , or don't bother having them

Its obvious we need to get better at playing the game in regards to recruitment and retention

But the club will have a lot to answer for if no visible improvements are seen in 2017

It just won't cut it with most fans

x 2\. Those clowns on 2SM always think they've got the inside track on the goings on in League and nine out of ten times they've got no clue.

Absolutely, I used to be fiercely against this sort of thing but they're in a high risk profession where it can all be taken away in a heartbeat, usually through no fault of their own. I don't begrudge any player taking the maximum amount of cash they can get while they can. There's different dynamics at play in Rugby League compared to most professions in which I believe players should be given a little more leeway. If we didn't want to let him go, he would still be here.

Reading the Rugby League week, sorry can't put it up as I haven't got the Laptop.

From the Mole though…...thought I'd share it anyway

Title: Taupau was on the Nose at Wests Tigers
" Apparently not everyone at the Wests Tigers was unhappy to see the back of Martin Taupau. I'm hearing that the Sea Eagles recruit began to read into his press a bit this year, and started insisting that people address him as " team Kapow " rather than Martin or Marty. The rumour is that his antics got a few people's noses out of joint "

So there you go a Mole special, on page 8

Yeah I agree, my sentiments are the same as everyone else's….No player is bigger than the Club and if he had a chip on his shoulder? Which I have no doubt he probably did, then on your bike I say.

I never found the fend on Alex Johnston funny either, even at the time. Nor the way he was lairrising the Souths supporters after he scored his second try in that game. Clear signs that his head was too big for his shoulders.
