Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

WESTS Tigers enforcer Marty Taupau set a new deadlift personal best last week of 310kg, which is the equivalent of two 750 litre fridges.

While the Kiwi hardman continues to take his powerlifting training techniques into new territory, what is not so clear is Taupau’s continued position at the Wests Tigers.

Officially, Taupau has one year to run on his current Wests Tigers contract but The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the backrower recently knocked back a $1.1 million two-year extension.

The development has sparked debate amongst rival clubs about whether the Kiwi enforcer could be looking at an early departure from the Tigers.

Aside from his powerlifting focus, Taupau has actively talked up a possible switch to the NFL.

Expected to be a member of the Kiwi Test touring squad to England after the NRL grand final, Taupau could command upwards of $650,000-a-season on the open market.

The Wests Tigers have denied the Kiwi international asked for a release earlier this month but the indication is Taupau will make a call on his future early next year.

POWER: Taupau gunning for world record

DEAL: Tigers vow to honour Farah contract

Tapau was reluctant to make any comment on his future when contacted by The Sunday Telegraph but the smart money is on the Tigers facing a fight to retain him beyond next year.

There is no suggestion of any issues with the Tigers coaching staff or a personality clash like the Robbie Farah situation, but by knocking back the Wests extension the early warning signs have sounded.

Taupau’s agent Darryl Mather said he expected strong interest in Tapau, who also played rugby union as a junior.

“Despite the massive speculation around Marty and his own declared interest in looking at the NFL into the future, it is SFX policy not to discuss player contract matters publicly,” Mather said.

“Suffice to say, Marty is still contracted to the Wests Tigers for 2016.”

lol whatever he's gonna be worth after 2016, he wouldn't be worth it for us.

as for 2016, we shouldn't release him. no front ended, back ended crap. play 2016 according to the contract and if you play crap, you're losing money from 2017 onwards.

I think it would be a mistake for him to leave, he's made himself the face of the club which is helping to build his reputation and image/brand, hopefully he will do the smart thing. I think he will stay if we have a good 2016.I can understand that he probably thinks it would be in his best interest to take a wait and see approach considering shape the club is in atm.

If its money he wants he'll be better off staying here. Without too many stars at our club he can really drive his own brand as mentioned above. If he goes to, say, South Sydney, he's just another one of their big fowards and he'll disappear in their pack.

I like Marty but the fact remains he was just another reggies forward who couldn't get a regular first grade gig at the Dogs when he joined us. He's played well for us overall. Sometimes (like the last Souths game) really well, but $1.1 million for an extra 2 years is more than reasonable. Love him to stay but If he goes, he goes. We can't afford to be forced into paying overs for anyone any more!

I agree 100%.
Has the ability to be an NRL powerhouse, but has been extremely inconsistent this year.
At this stage not worth paying overs for….

Couldn't agree more.
Realistically we are going to struggle to keep him. We have to learn from our mistakes and not forget what got us in a Salary Cap mess and not allow to be held to Ransom by player Agents anymore.

The Contract offer of $1.1 million over 2 years is a pretty fair one.
I don't think he will be here past 2016 but we can't afford to pay massive overs at the expense of the rest of the side being affected by it.

Good luck to him his at the peak of his Career and with the Farah saga that has occurred? His looking out for himself and foremost.
No loyalty in League not that he owes us any anyway.

Would love for him to stay but won't be happening.

You would be wanting to make that call on Taupau in around June or July to see how he is coping with the rule changes

And I think his player manager might be concerned about that as well

He might only be a 300 k a season player by that stage if he can't pull big minutes

happy i'm led to believe that our Club initiated to open discussions with Marty and his Manager not Marty coming to us .

We need to fix the culture of this club so players want to play for the Tigers.
We won't sign anyone in demand until we repair the brand. Damage done with forcing players out is big.
Don't forget we have done this to varying extremes to: Ryan, Benji, Hino, Fifita, Farah and others.

You can't pay any more than $550k under the Cap for Taupau. We need a TPAto swing the deal and to compete this is why we never sign anyone of any note.

My thoughts exactly - he's getting gassed now. How is gonna ever play for a full 80\. Unless he gets moved to the edge…
I honestly think this is where he'd be more suited

Salary cap has gone up $300k is not going to cut it. Any rep player is $500k+ minimum.

He's a 20 minute back rower that's effective for 15 at the moment…. Sometimes.
If he wants more than 550k a year - He's gonna have to put in a bit better than that...
Regardless of his rep status.

He's contracted so we should keep him. Apart from Ava he is the only forward we have who can break the line ( i.e. not a plodder). Who are we going to buy who can break the line like Marty even if he doesn't play big minutes? Some people on here seem to cave in quickly. Do we show some fight for once and keep this guy or do we continue to just let everyone go and run around with a bottom three side forever?
There are too many reserve graders in our side already. Marty is one of the half dozen or so genuine first graders we have. If he is under contract Do NOT release him

Dah….Marty is not being released...He has never asked for a release ...he is contracted till the End of 2016...

This is just all part of the re-negotiation process every high level off contract player goes through....

I agree with this. He has played a handful of good games since his time here, that face palm on Alex Johnston really inflated his image in the game and if rumours are true, in his own mind. He played a few good games around that time and then dogg hit Malony on the ground to sit out a few weeks, didnt do anything when he came back.

If he can play that enforcer role for 20mins before and 20mins after halftime then id throw $550K at him but with a handful of good games and about 20mins of footy a round out of him at the moment, if he wants more then he can go, time for this club to stop paying overs for players that dont produce the goods.

Maybe Marty is concerned with where the club is heading and doesn't want to commit until he sees what happens early next year.

If we start well and there are signs of a joint club then he stays at the club he has come to love, otherwise it's changed to a point where he no longer wants to be apart of it and he moves on.
