Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

If he stays next year he has honoured his contract , and good on him, but knowing you are off to another club the following year must be hard if your teams is not doing well , who knows we may come out all guns blazing and Marty has a re think , that as long as there is not deal done yet

Of course he is staying for next year, he has no choice if the tigers don't agree to let him go.

He is staying this season and leaving for Manly the season after. It's clear as day from his comments above. Wish he'd just come out and say that. He still might and I'll applaud him if he does.

Looks like, for the short term, we'll be weakening our roster to make it stronger. Doesn't look good for Taylor. The media will make sure he gets the sack if results don't go our way. When we come good from it all, at least he'll be able to say he was the architect of it because I highly doubt he'll be in charge when it happens.

1) it's disrespectful to talk about playing for another club whilst still in the old team colours.

2) even if he has signed a deal, we still have until the June deadline to negotiate so the contract isn't worth the paper its written on.

Disclaimer: I'm not exactly sure of the deadline month, but it's ages away and I'm sure Pascoe is…

I have absolutely no issue with him busting his gut to raise the value of his contract with the Tigers and feeling out how the change of management goes, whilst holding the silver tails as a backup incase he gets injured and his dollar value goes down. This is the perfect way for the Tigers to hold all the negotiating cards.

"Clear as day"?

Where exactly did he say that he will be leaving?

Get a grip. Or perhaps, loosen the grip?

The June deadline is scrapped. Once a contract is signed there is now a 10 day cooling off period where the player can renig on the deal and sign for their current club. If marty has already signed with Manly or whoever for 2017 it would already be too late.

1\. The June 30 dead-line rule has been scraped in the wake of the DCE fiasco of last year…the rule now is a player has a 10 day cooling off period once signing a contract with any Club ...that's it...

2\. The kicker here is that rival Clubs are not 'supposed' to sign or even enter into negotiations with a player until November 1 in the year preceding that in which the player comes off contract.....Hence the veiled denials....Taupau can sign with Manly or any other rival Club after Nov 1 for the 2017 season ...we would then have 10 days to change his mind...

3\. If he does so.... the decision the Club would then have to make is whether or not they are prepared to have a player at the Club who sees their future elsewhere and/or what compensation we could receive in return for releasing Taupau from his 2016 contract...

If he stays, good. But he still has some improvement to do.

If he doesn't stay, then seeya later. People often forget that everytime a player retires or changes teams, ten new guys will bust a gut to gave a crack at one tenth the price.

Im over this thing where peoole think the whole world will collapse if a certain player leaves. Each new generation holds a new talent, almost always better than the last.

Agree.

Also Manly had a few pretty handy players in their 20's this year. If Marty wants out they might as well try to negotiate to take a couple of promising youngsters in return for releasing Marty early. At least we get something out of it then.

Lets face it we won't win the comp with him next year anyway so if he's going in 2017 we might as well start looking ahead.

Oh cmon - he's had every chance here to answer a pretty simple question about his future and done the opposite. It's not clear as day that he's choosing Manly but his comments inspire little confidence in his desire to stay with us. My grip is pretty spot on.

Its simple Tigers will retain if they pay more in 2016\. If they don't up the salary next year he s gone.

Taupau will be here for 2016\. He isn't being paid enough to warrant any sort of benefit of releasing him. If the club release him then they are complete idiots.

It looks like he is gone for 2017\. If this is the case, stick him back on the bench as an impact forward. Its not a demotion, its what is needed for the team. If he doesn't like it, big deal, not like it will matter in 2017.

Give the 10 and 13 jerseys to Ava and Sue. These guys are Tigers through and through and are starting to come along really well.

That makes absolutely no sense

If the Tigers increase his minimal contract next year from $150k to $550k and then extend on the same terms as Manly we will keep him as we are the only club that can pay him more in 2016\. Money talks and it is actually the Tigers that can pay him more than Manly as he is contracted with us in 2016 on a low salary which, we can enforce.

The real question is what his Valuation is for the Tigers we can't pay overs.

He's an impact player who can break the line. There's really only Marty and Ava that fall into that category. He should be kept for the above reason and also to show that the club is not a soft touch for contracted players. This needs to happen as we are trying to become more professional in the way we operate. it's the coach's call how he uses him but I feel he is more value from the bench.

Not worth 550k - a 550k player should play for 80 minutes.

If he goes - he goes. I am a fan but not that type of money.
