Society is also to blame. Society makes the grog that the govt gets a lot of tax out of. There should have been strong intervention ages ago to prevent this situation, but such intervention would have been blasted as nanny state gone overboard. He should have been court-ordered from alcohol years ago with monitoring and support and/or the grog companies picking up the tab for the damage their product does.
 
I knew a guy who was terrific when sober but a few beers made him a madman. When drinking without his usual back up correcting him he killed a guy with his working chisel, so predictable.
 
Seriously Byronbay…..mate, if a grown man cant behave like a normal member of society it ain't anybodies fault but his own. Blaming the alcohol companies is a ridiculous statement. Nobody puts a gun to his head and forces him to drink grog. It is this 'someone or something else is to blame' attitude that causes flogs like this boofhead Lodge to never think he has to answer for his actions.
With all due to respect to you i seriously cannot believe anyone would think anything or anyone else is to blame for this idiot other than himself. Most people I know can get mindless drunk without threatening to kill women and bust down strangers' doors.
 
You are correct when stating most people can handle grog but for the few percent that cannot then what is their destiny when grog is the lubricant of social life in modern Australia? I stopped drinking decades ago and guess what - I stopped being invited to parties and was told that was the reason.

In the Islamic world where grog is banned Lodge would not have a problem. Prison costs about $135K per person per year, so a drunken act can easily add up to million dollars for the taxpayers - is that sensible and fair?

As grog is not found in nature (not in large quantities) so it is a deliberate act to manufacture a addictive product that harms society and with advertising of grog on youth what chance can they have to make a sensible decision. I know a guy who cannot watch an NRL game due to the gambling also advertised with it - he is a recovering gamblaholic.

How many times have we seen someone whom should only have two drinks at the most keep on drinking coz already in the mood. Others eat too much etc etc. but don't get locked up for doing so. We all have our weaknesses and it is profiteering that causes much more vulnerabilities to be exposed to rapture.

That guy whom I know killed a friend, he had a large young family. It was in the Philippines and being surrounded by relos no one testified against him so he was released, he was a terrific father otherwise and I am glad he escaped.

If you want to outlaw everything that people can abuse where does it stop?….Make it illegal to own rope because someone can strangle somebody with it?

We will just say that it was on the grog. I get your point. The figures are that about 70% of violent crime is alcohol related. I think there should be a register of bods whom can't handle their grog, they get counselling to severely limit their drinking with support from their true mates. That means that some mates have to stay sober with them. I had to change mates when gave up the grog. There are a lot of terrific guys when sober and it is sad to see them disintegrate over a product manufactured, distributed and taxed by society. Look how it has wrecked the indigenous community. I was brought up in a household without grog so maybe it is easier for me.
 
This is a real tragedy and not just for young Lodge. Imagine how his poor parents must be feeling. Good chance of their son doing some time even with the plea bargain and then there's the lawsuit seeking millions. Great Christmas the family must be having. Is the NRL providing any support, counselling etc for the family? I assume we aren't.
 
Presumably they can only get at his assets, send him bankrupt for about 5 years then he is free to start again. Hope his parents don't have to spend a fortune to help him, maybe better if they drain his assets instead so the damage is limited.

If I went on a rampage like Lodge did and threatened peoples lives, busted into a home with a scared little kid inside it and got arrested I wouldn't expect nor get any counselling for my family from my employer.
 
He has avoided jail and basically got community service. His parents have copped somewhat of a financial hit during this though. Remains to be seen how the NRL view the matter.

Too right swordy. But the bleeding hearts who see Lodge as the poor victim in all of this will say 'social media is a crucial part of his "therapy and healing" '. :unamused: :deadhorse:
