Michael Maguire leaves club

Head of football Tim Sheens explained the decision to part ways with Michael Maguire was about giving the club certainty moving forward to allow them to build their roster.

“I have had a good look at things over the last week and a half and where we were halfway through the season,” Sheens told reporters on Tuesday evening.

“Everyone loved to call it a review. I like to think it was a look back at where we were last year when there was issues about Madge being here.

This was before I got here. In the eight months since things haven’t improved and we are in our fourth year, so in real terms my recommendation was and particularly for this reason:

“We are as most clubs are looking at next season and the season after and our recruitment.

“For instance players off-contract this year in November can be discussed. Players off-contract can be moved straight away. Players that have got a year to go can be signed.

“I couldn’t say that Michael would be here in three years time or four years time for that matter.

“I have already said publicly that three years is the development period that we have got here. There are 17-year-olds and 19-year-olds at our club who will be very good as well.

“So we needed someone there who is going to be there. For what we do buying players for next year we need that coach to be involved.

“Otherwise we will get a situation where we shut down next year and if a new coach comes on board he won’t have anywhere to manoeuvre.

“It is basically this is the time in every club and the other two clubs that have also moved coaches are doing the same thing.

“You want to have a coach in place and you want him making decisions about next year’s roster.”

Sheens admitted Maguire’s poor win-loss record played a part in the decision.

“We are in a results driven business let’s face it,” Sheens said.

“We are a professional sport so we all know and I’ve been there myself. It is not always fair, but at the end of the day it is the reality of professional sport. So that’s part of it.

Maguire was at the helm at training on Tuesday morning and addressed the playing group after the club handed down their decision.

“Wests Tigers Head Coach, Michael Maguire, has today been terminated from his role, effective immediately,” the club said in a statement.

“Wests Tigers sincerely thanks Michael for all his hard work and effort over the past three and a half years.

“As this is no doubt a challenging time for all parties, the club would like to respect Michael’s privacy, wish him all the very best and will make no further comment.

“For the rest of the season Brett Kimmorley will take over as Interim coach.”

Maguire will walk away with a payout of $800,000.
Interesting. Reading that would suggest they have already got the coach sorted for next year.

So Sheens just said in an interview that he wants a development coach and Madge didn't fit the criteria.
When asked what is a development coach he said giving young players a go.
I sort of get that because Madge is a proven Coach at gelling a good roster into a good team ala Souths. He needs the roster to be strong in order to get results.
It appears now, that WT want a coach that can develop players like Daine Laurie and young players coming through pathways.
So what this is telling me is that Madge either hasn't got the demeanor to gel with young players and guide them to success in the NRL...or he doesn't want to.
I can only hope Tim Sheens is a good judge because if we get another coach who doesn't work as a development coach then we are back to square one.
Looking back to what paws was saying about jumping on the Pathway train I now think he meant development style coach.....so paws I'll agree with you that Morris would fit the bill or maybe Ciraldo.
If your going to be a development coach you will need gun assistant coaches and pathway gurus to identify what players are "worth" the time and effort.
The COE is going to be a huge effort moving forward. It's a pity Madge didn't get this facility or the team he deserves for his tenure.
It's a buisiness and sometimes people get hurt, no more than us, the supporters.

Explains Tupou getting a run out of the blue a few weeks back, the big push for Simpkin & Madden getting a consistent go as well.

Also ticks the box with Kimmorley who has been apart of the pathways is now interim coach.

Have zero doubts we are hunting for Ciraldo if the deal isn't already done.

Sheen's interview has pretty much ruled a line through the rest of this year. Made it clear its about developing players, unlikely to make the semis and Noddy has no pressure to win games.

Whilst we could all see this year wasn't likely to end in semis, really hope our players don't have this same attitude.

I think it's great. May actually give the more experienced players a kick because if they don't perform and a younger guy does well they won't be here when their contract ends this year or next.

I'm excited to hopefully see some fresh blood come through & see what they are made of.

A old song to try to make the best of it:

It’s my (party) tigers and I’ll cry if I want to.

Nobody knows where Maguire has gone
But sheensy left the same time
Why was Lee stalking them both
The team is supposed to be going fine

It’s my tigers and I’ll cry if I want to…
You would cry to if they happened to you!

Madge broke no records and kept swearing all night
But leave me alone for awhile
Till Ciraldos coaching for us
I’ve got not reason to smile.

It’s my tigers…

Sheensy and Madgey just walked through the door
Like a Queen with his king
Oh what an origin surprise
Madgys clutching his ring…

$800k payout, he’ll be ok.
Well done but you should apologise to Lesley Gore.

Well done to this ridiculous club and the halfwits that applauded this.

Fire the one guy at the club who has proven premiership success, shows actual passion for the club and has been hindered by ridiculous contracts for most of his tenure not to mention a ridiculous injury list this season.

Club parasites like Nofa, Brooks, Liddle and crew must be ecstatic about this. Now they don't have to be held accountable for their garbage play.

I'll see the morons who supported this in two to three years when they're calling for the head of the next poor bugger who has to coach this pack of bludgers.

Yeh could be, Morris has history with us and a little bit more mature, he's my pick.

If that’s the case what is the point of persisting with
Lucy and Kelma? We should get some trades happening this year to free up roster spaces or pick up a long term replacement player.

Timmy was brought in with his right hand man to make decisions and they have done that. Good luck to noddy. Madge can’t complain, he had favourites , ultimately it cost him, and as a whole I agree with sheens we have not improved.

Yeah mate I wouldn't be disappointed with either Ciraldo or Morris. With our emphasis on juniors we need a coach with the capacity to relate to youth.

Too late.
Ah man, first I've seen of it.
I just think what he was working towards was bigger than the numbers and I'd be pretty pssed if I were him.
Tough times and he was stoic. Feels like he gave so much and now doesn't even get to finish the season.
He's had years of wasted cap money and been stuck with a half back on $800k (?) a year who, let's face it, up until they got Hastings and moved him to 6, has not fulfilled his potential at all.
Pretty gutted, but that's coaching in the NRL I guess.
Sounds like they had to react to Barrett and Brown leaving out they wouldn't get who they're after.
I hope to God they've got a good replacement already agreed because the club is just a coach's career killer.

Wish he got a few more weeks, team selected if fit with the addition of AD and Roberts in 17 would've been what he wanted. There were good signs.

Can only imagine they wanted to give him the chance to land NZ job as a sop to his genuine commitment and loyalty.

Whoever they land better be good and be able to bring across some big names.

Understand the reasoning behind letting Madge go, but not at all pleased about the execution, we are an unprofessional club, from the timing of the sacking to the wording (terminated) in the statement it's disrespectful to someone who has given their all for the club, regardless of the result. I wish Madge the best.

I hope they already have the long term replacement sorted and announce them in the next few weeks. I suspect it will be Ciraldo, if it's anyone else then why bother.
