Mixing Footy and Gambling

The scary thing is kids are associating the two as if they go hand in hand…..an ex NRL player - forget who, maybe Johns - talking on this topic on radio said his sons thoughts on upcoming games are now influenced by the odds KIDS see everywhere on RL shows, newspapers website etc....''I think YYYY will win cause theyre $1.70''
Its brainwashing in a way.

The introduction of gambling "talk" during NRL TV shows and coverage is to condition us to accept gambling as just another source of entertainment. Which it is for many, but the intent is to expand their customer base. As Justo wrote, they do this by setting up specials, even I was tempted to put some money on Benji scoring during the game, easy money, I'm sure they expected to lose money on it but they'd get you to create an account and download the app, (the offer was only for bets via their app) makes your next bet ever so easy.

Correct.
Theyre the nice guys.
Remeber one agency a couple of years back paid out in May or june on saints winning the minor premiership?
Sainst faltered and the agency lost….but it generated a mass of publicity for them.

I love a punt...I use TAB website often to gauge what I will bet on.
But I wont open an acct.
I have to drive somewhere to put the bet on.
My lounge room and the TAB/Rosehill racecourse have always been different venues and as far as Im concerned it will stay that way.

But the kids that are being introduced to all this now.....everything is at their fingertips, and something potentially as damaging as gambling addiction, that could be catastrophic 20 years down the track

You've nailed it Ink. It's not so much that gambling is promoted, it is what it is product placed with and the accessibility. Every kid who idolises the likes of Barba, Benji and Hayne will all be exposed to gambling via television and radio coverage from a young age, and will grow up identifying with it as part of the game.

It's not right. If betting is going to be promoted on television, give the line odds for a win and that's it. I find it worrying that Munsie and Waterhouse can get their melon on the screen and promote that they have a bet that in the second minute of the second half that Uate is going to fart whilst staring at the punter in seat 10AA at Hunter Stadium.

After the issues with Tandy, you'd think the game would be well advised in cutting down in exotic betting, and if not, at least limiting the exposure on television coverage.

You'd think we'd have learnt with alcohol and tobacco sponsorship/advertising in the past….but to be fair live betting etc is a relatively new phenomenon, while the problem of gambling addiction has really only come to attention over the past decade or so

For me, you have to way up the pros and cons. The game will do what it believes is best for the game.

Pros: extra cash (and lots of it), things that the extra cash brings (e.g. increased cap, club grants, etc).
Cons: turning people off the sport, creating gambling habits (this is more of a morality question, I can't see the NRL being too concerned).

That being said, I'd love to see someone knocking Tom out. Little weasel.
