My view on Mick Potter

It's impossible for anyone to say how good he is based on results.

He has had two seasons and there has been improvement. We have got up against some highly fancied sides.

But the same things keep letting us down. It all boils down to consistency. The players keep losing penalty counts and they keep dropping the ball. On the Triple M coverage Paul Gallen identified that we suck at defending back to back sets and he's right. Not only do we give away penalties, but they lead to tries way too often. It's all lack of focus, and the net result of having a slow side, and an inexperienced one. Inexperienced sides need to be inspired to keep their focus on the task at hand. As soon as the mind wanders then the ball hits the deck. It doesn't just STICK like it always does for the experienced sides.

We've had a LOT of injury concerns and he can't be blamed for that. That would be effecting the side in a big way. If we were able to keep the same team on the park all year we of course would be performing better. This is the variable that clouds any judgement you can make from the outside.

When this team let the ball do the talking, they have shown they are more than a match for everybody. That means Mick Potter's job is simply TWO THINGS. To inspire the players and to do research to arm the players.

Mick Potter IS A VERY VERY GOOD MAN. He is respectful, polite, honest and incredibly nice. During the post match press conference he stopped in the middle of it, almost in tears, to make sure he paid respect to the Dragons performance. That takes some serious nobility. If he's so nice, then it's not through a personality clash that he could be having any issues with anyone at the club, player or not, because he's just way too likeable.

If there are issues at the club from within the playing group then it's because he isn't getting the calls on the training paddock right. He's not arming the players with the right information and he's not getting selections right.

A hard man like David Kidwell is not the answer either. They need someone with Mick Potter's character, but the footy brain to match. I won't speculate about who is right for the job but at the end of the day if the players don't respond to him, he simply isn't.

I hate the way it has played out but hard decisions need to be made right now because we are at the cusp of a dynasty and we have to get the mix right now. It appears as though more than a vocal minority think Mick Potter isn't the right person to create that mix, and as fans all we can do is assume they are right rather than speculate.

Robbie Farah is within his rights to have an opinion on the ability of his coach. He shouldn't have text messaged Gordon Tallis to tell him, but Tallis should not have shared a private text message with the world. Robbie Farah shouldn't be hated for having an opinion. If this all went on behind closed doors and the net result was one simple action that revealed Mick Potter was leaving, replacement named and it was because the players weren't responding to him and it was left at that then we would all shrug and move on. We should do just that, rather than going off the rails. As fans, especially fans that are starting to get quoted in mainstream newspapers like the Sydney Morning Herald, we need to start thinking more about what our posts on this little forum are doing to the side. We have a voice too.

I support Mick and think the shit he has had to endure is absolute crap. Give him at least another year and if he doesn't get top 8 then he can be sacked. You can't sack a coach with the injuries the side has had as well as the bad ref's decisions that we've had to endure. Success does not come over night FFS!

One more year and the player unrest could cause even worse problems. If the players aren't responding to him now why waste a year of everybody's lives to satisfy him because he's a nice guy?

you gotta remember that mick is a rookie coach as well. he's bound to make mistakes. the wits and better game plans will come with experience but stuff like honesty and nobility- you either have it or you dont.

i've said it in the past that the next contract has to be about whether mick can take us forward- which im not yet sure but all the other options themselves are rookies. they will make the same mistakes as mick and then the next thing you know we'll have sacked 3 coaches in 5 years.

we're all giving brooks, siro, moses etc time to develop- we need to give the same leverage to mick as well. he took farah off against manly: admitted to his mistake and didnt repeat it. he dropped benji to the bench. he kept taking anasta off for austin, something that brian smith didnt have the balls to do at roosters.

he brought in players like taupau, austin, halatau. re-signed players like gavet and simona who would've left the club if it wasnt for potter.

you cant get rid of someone without replacing him with someone better- there's no one better in the market or inside our coaching ranks.

They seemed to respond last week,….but 7 days later theyre not responding. Yup

Coaches can inspire youth - yes....but once they cross the sideline theyre on their own until half time...if itys inspirration they need it wont be from the coach for 40 minutes

i dont care about the politics as long as we make the finals
At the end of the day its Potters job to guide us there . Right ?

So in an ideal world you dont do your job you get performance managed and shown the door if you dont improve

No excuses

Paul Gallen's opinions on the Tigers are worthless. He has slagged us off before and this in the light of the Tigers having a better record against the Sharks than any other team. We always beat them; they suck big time.

I put our lack of consistency this year down to yet another ridiculous run of injuries. We have struggled to keep our key players on the park, and the farce of Origin contributed to 3 losses (it was 3 wasnt it?) while our rep players were off the park.

The fact that we were 'tipped' for the spoon doesnt cut any mustard, just as our premiership favouritism didnt a couple of years ago. But it does put our relative standing in the competition in some perspective - we were expected to suck. I think most regular posters on this forum held very modest hopes for this season. But we have not sucked, and with our full roster we are a chance of beating anyone, and have toppled some of the heavyweights already. Now, to say that the Head Coach has played no part in all of this relative success beggars belief; it is tantamount to saying we dont need a Head Coach. And for there to be talk of him being sacked while we are still in the contest for the 8, is shocking and disgraceful. I feel very sorry for Potter; he deserves a lot better than he has copped and his apparent imminent sacking reflects poorly on many people within the Tigers.

Lol I'm doing the forum a service by being vocally opposite the rabble rousing senseless torch bearers tbh. If it wasn't for me and a few others the forum would be a Farah effigy burning exercise tonight.

Agree completely. A common flaw of human nature is "let's replace it with something better". But often that "something better" doesn't exist". As the song goes, "you don't know what you've got till it's gone". We could go on for years trying to find that something better but never finding it.

Even if Potter was the biggest wanker to walk the earth, the way the WT hierarchy have handled the whole drama has resulted in Potter looking like the victim. I thought CEO or the board are in a position of power as they are the ones deemed to handle these situations. Well at least we've cleared up one question.

Good points. Honestly I'd be not against Potter being retained. Personally I just want some level of stability inside the club. I also want the right people in charge. It seems like there is a learned element inside the club that feel Potter isn't that person, but that may not be so either. Everyone should relax. If Potter gets sacked and we go on to be the worst team in the comp then you can pull out your flaming torches and head to Concord but does anyone really see that happening?

2014 = 857 injuries to a side that's played a combined 23 NRL games with 3 out of every 2 tries disallowed by refs shipped in from Uranus.

Yeah it's been a tough year, and that's why I said it's impossible to judge on results. He might be great and held back by injuries, tough calls and destabilisation, but he might suck and be held up by a talented playing group? I dunno.

Pymblepete nails it (above).
I'm not fortunate enough to go to games so channel 9 is my only option. Unlike many others I value Phil Gould's opinions on teams and coaching. He expressed astonishment about Potters treatment, given his performance with this emerging team. He expressed the opinion (not a quote) that if Potter is sacked it must down to internal influences and not performance.
As an unashamed Potter supporter I am certainly glad that he was not sacked tonight, but in my opinion, the lily livered management did not go far enough and express support for Potter and his obvious achievements. Gutlessly, they are keeping their blades sharp.
