The Hillbillies episode where The Duke met Granny!

What makes this story immortal is the cost of this historic appearance. When asked how much he would charge for the pivotal cameo, John Wayne one of the highest-paid movie stars of all time, gave a uniquely humble and generous reply: “Give me a fifth of bourbon - that’ll square it.”.

This simple gesture cemented Duke's spirit: he participated not for the money, but for the sheer joy of sharing a classic, heartwarming moment with the American audience.

Craig Johnston was eligible to play for Australia, Scotland and South Africa

Starting his junior career with Lake Macquarie City in Newcastle, he was confident enough in his own ability to write to several English clubs as a 15-year-old asking for a trial.

His parents sold their house to move to fund his ticket to England, with Middlesbrough the only club that replied.

It was at Middlesbrough where he made his senior debut, putting in many eye-catching performances, with Liverpool then signing him in 1981 as a 20-year-old.

He made over 270 appearances and scored 40 goals for the Reds in an eight-year career in Merseyside.

At Liverpool he won five (5) Football League First Division titles, one (1) FA Cup, two (2) League Cups, one (1) Charity Shield, and one (1) European Cup.

Johnston returned to Australia following his retirement in 1988 where he remains to this day.

I still have a set of Colliers Encyclopedias and 10 years of year books plus 10 volumes of Collier's Junior classic books that my parent paid a fortune for in installments when a door to door salesman did a sales pitch on them.

From memory, I was in 4th class in primary school (around 1965-66, pretty sure it was still pound, shillings and pence) when we got them and have had them sitting in various book cases all these years.

About 10 or 15 years ago I decided it may be about time to part company with them and being the hoarder that I am I could not bare to toss them out because of the memories, the sacrifice and the huge amount of money that my parents paid for them all those years ago but decided if someone could use them that I could justify freeing up the space in the book case.

I approached one of the local charity "op" shops and offered them to the lady in charge after giving her a bit of a back ground into them.

She asked why would I want to part with them after all these years and memories, unfortunately the smart arse in me took over briefly, I mean I couldn't help myself and I told her that I had no further use for them as my Mrs and the kids already knew everything.

She obviously had no sense of humour and rejected my generous offer.

Still got them on the book shelf to this day.
