Not all black and white: Wests fans spitting feathers

The magpie on the sleeve is part of the JV arrangement (signed at the end of 1999) to honour the link between WT and wests magpies. The magpie should compliment the WT jersey and not dominate it. People are happy to dismiss the magpies as irrelevant and dead but the little magpie represents the history and tradition of one half of WT. With the majority of media and other league fans calling WT 'the tigers' the wests part is often overlooked or is not recognised as equally via merchandise and other issues. The magpie on the sleeve helps remind everyone (todays fans) of the link between magpies and WT and young kids of today and the future can question older generations to give them an explanation to the history of WT just like balmain who delivered the now dominant tigers brand to the birth of WT.

I really don't see why this is being made an issue?

I can understand the Magpies fans would be a little pee'd off, but does it really matter for this one off jersey?

The Wests Tigers have said that the magpie will be on the main 2012 season jerseys so I can't see how it not being on our trial jerseys that we use for 2 games is important.

Assuming that we only play in these jerseys for 2 games, if I'm mistaken on that then I apologize, but I hardly see this as a major issue, as long as the magpie is back on the main jerseys theres no problem here as far as I'm concerned 😕 .

Hell, if you're that worried about it, print one off on your computer and sticky tape it on the sleeve of your "eye of the tiger" jersey

Couldn't care about the yellow EOTT jersey. My post was in reference to the regular home and away jerseys introduced last year that has moved the magpie to the cuff where it is hard to see (especially covered up with tape) and a lot smaller since the original year 2000-2004 size or 2005-2010 size. In some fans eyes its like desecrating the only visible link to the original wests brand. It wasn't a problem for 2000-2010 just became an issue with last years new design (and sadly the 2012 jerseys will be exactly the same with no change to the smaller size and positioning)

Expect a new WT jersey design for season 2014

I still think this is pretty trivial to be arguing over, I mean really…

Should there be a little Tiger on the sleeve as well?

And don't say the main logo is the Balmain Tigers' representation because it is a different looking tiger from Balmain's and also the club's main logo is there because the team name is "Wests Tigers".

As we know, "Wests" is from Western Suburbs and "Tigers" is from Balmain, so the fact that our main logo emblem is a Tiger is not representative solely of Balmain's side of the joint venture, but representative of the new club's name as a whole.

So if you add the old Western Suburbs Magpies logo to the sleeve then you should add the old Balmain Tiger's logo to the sleeve as well...

Its not the western suburbs logo its a little magpie on its own. Balmain may not be anywhere on the jersey but the tigers brand is very dominant and pretty much eats up the wests brand. A small magpie may be trivial to some WT fans but it means alot to some. Like i said its not a big ask to have the magpie stay where it is in size in location. I also dont have a problem with the idea of a full balmain logo and full wests logo on each side if that was decided upon (similar to wt logo on allstars jersey)

Tats you….there IS a problem as far as Im concerned...two games is two too many.

If no one says anything, then they may think no one cares....and the issue remains

It all starts with ''its just a one off trial jersey''

These things always start this way...so nice of you to make mockery of something some find important.

I dont want to stir debate, just put things in perspective for all WT fans.

Think of this example. I have an old black and white scarf that just has 'magpies' on it. Someone has a similar old scarf in black and gold with the word 'tigers' on it also from the same era.

One can be drapped around a WT fan and nobody would blink an eye or think twice question someone about wearing a tigers scarf.. However, While wearing a black and white magpies scarf, some WT fans (especially younger fans) will wonder what the hell is that guy wearing a magpies scarf for??

Same style scarf, same pre WT era, both from clubs that gave birth to WT, YET one is STILL relevant one is not. Keeping a magpie on the sleeve will keep a permanent link to the birth of WT.

While WT is in my heart, magpies will always be in my blood.

I wonder if the Illawarra St George Steelers fans [This word has been automatically removed] and complain about silly stuff like this, the Western Suburbs Maggies were my team about 13 years ago, NOW, it's the Wests Tigers…. Couldn't care less if there is a magpie on a Tigers jersey or not!

The magpie should stay on the jersey but the club has said it will and this was a one off oversight…..highly unlikely to happen again.

I actually find it odd people get so hung up on "symbols". For me, supporting a club is about where you grew up or you follow the team your dad did. So the emblem means nothing. Being a Balmain boy, i would have preferred us to be called "Balmain Magpies". Now i know thats a little strange, and would never happen as the "Wests Tigers" name has many more positives. but if i was an old Wests supporter id be stoked that our team is called Wests.

It wasn't an over site by the Wests Tigers. They have been putting a Magpie on the sleeve for 12 years now.

And its not like X-blades didn't know about it, they have been our jersey manufacturer since 2004.

I think it was hoped that it wouldn't be noticed nor mentioned.

A lot of you say the Magpie on the sleeve means nothing to you, well maybe it means something to many Wests supporters including myself.

It was agreed to back in 1999 by BOTH Balmain and Western Suburbs that:
- the name would be Wests Tigers
- The main emblem would be a Tiger
- The magpie logo (not the emblem) would be placed on both sleeves.

If this very simple arrangement was maintained, these problems wouldn't occur.

But why do they keep on popping up?

You think Wests Tigers would be smarter and try and embrace both sides fully.
For if they did, no one could stop us! :sign:

Sirro - that would be fine if WT was referred to as wests more often then it is. Where is the wests in the 2012 member logo? Wests omitted on team lists, tv icons, and i wont bring up the nsw cup issue. Commentators, journalists find it easier to call them the tigers… WT fans cheer tigers, tigers not wests, wests!!!

As i clearly stated. The Little magpie on the sleeve has not hindered the success of WT or the 'tigers brand' in any way. Leave it as it was pre 2010\. Thats all i am saying. Not a big ask.

As for comparison to dragons. St.George-illawarra is a merge/takeover. WT is a joint venture. As for old magpie fans not caring eiether way, that is a matter of opinion. Loving and following WT doesnt mean i have to pretend the magpies dont or didnt exist. Hundreds of WT fans wearing old philips or old victa jerseys feel a link to their original club in the same way.

Here we go again.

Stick to the topic about the jersey and omission of the Magpie logo. If this degenerates into other Wests related issues or involves Balmain, posts will be deleted.

Journalists preference as to how they refer to the club and what fans preference to cheer at games is irrelevant to this topic.

So we can't talk about Wests, when the topic involves the survival of Wests iconic image on the Wests Tigers jersey.

You are joking me right…

I don't want to get involved into the machinations behind this but I was perturbed by the use of 'fazed out' in the lead article, surely it should have read 'phased out' or is this another example of text speak or Americanisms?.

I don't know Bug, an ex NRL CEO has previously told me it would be one of the toughest gigs in the NRL.

Sorry mate can you keep it on topic. The moderators here are sick of the potATO vs potato, TomATO vs Tomato debate. We are now all Austramericans. Get over your heritage. It means nothing here!

Consider this your final warning.

In what way ??

How would it be?

The main problems are the use of all three colours, and player distributuion. Its not hard. They need to get away from a Balmain based main jersey and go back to a Wests Tigers specific jersey like most of the ones prior to 2011.

HOW IS IT HARD ???
