In 2001, Pizza Hut made history by paying about $1 million to send a pizza to the International Space Station aboard a Russian resupply mission. The six-inch salami pizza was vacuum-sealed and specially prepared for the challenges of space.

Pepperoni was rejected after testing showed it could develop mold, so salami was chosen instead, with extra salt added because astronauts’ taste perception changes in microgravity.

Cosmonaut Yuri Usachov heated the pizza in space, took a bite, and gave a thumbs-up creating one of the most unusual pizza deliveries ever.
