**All Stars shortlist of 64 announced**

With Stage One of the NRL All Stars public selection process now complete, a shortlist of 64 players has revealed the contenders for Wayne Bennett’s side to take on the ‘Learn. Earn. Legend!’ Indigenous All Stars in the 2011 Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars match, at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast on February 12.

More than 21,000 Rugby League fans took up the challenge of playing selector and now the public has the tough task of choosing just one player from each of the 16 NRL Clubs to join Kangaroos captain Darren Lockyer and New Zealand captain Benji Marshall in the 20-man squad.

Fans must now decide between players like Todd Carney, Nate Myles, Braith Anasta and Shaun Kenny -Dowall from the Roosters, Josh Dugan, David Shillington, Bronson Harrison and Jarrod Croker from the Raiders and Feleti Mateo, Simon Mannering, Lance Hohaia and Manu Vatuvei from the Warriors.

“The second stage of NRL All Stars voting is certainly a challenging task for the fans,” NRL Chief Executive, David Gallop, said today.

“You only have to look at the players who missed out to realise just how competitive the voting process is.

“Some of Rugby League’s biggest names have missed out including players like Mark Gasnier, Mitchell Pearce and Michael Ennis.

“Now the fans have the difficult task of choosing one player from each NRL club and between players such as Nathan Hindmarsh and Jarryd Hayne to represent the Eels and Luke Lewis and Michael Jennings for the Panthers.”

Bennett’s positions will be released on January 2, 2011, with Stage Two voting opening at Midday AEDT (11:00am Queensland time) on January 3 at http://www.nrl.com/allstars" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and continuing until 11:59pm AEDT on January 27.

Wests Tigers
Gareth Ellis, Robbie Farah - Forwards
Lote Tuqiri, Chris Lawrence - Backs

Its a very difficult choice as to which Wests Tigers player to vote for. Is it worth voting for players that probably don't have a chance of being picked eg Robbie and Chris were both in the Australian squad but both missed selection in the final. Gareth or Lote are more of a chance although any of them would do a good job if selected.

It's much harder picking for the Tigers than any other team, especially with Benji's pre-selection. We have quality across the park. The votes were probably pretty evenly spread.

Ellis and Gall for me.

The process is real tedious.

I chose no hopers for other clubs so that our boys would increase their chances to progress.

It's 1 player from every team, so it doesn't really matter who you chose from the other teams.

All Stars News Article - Bennett reveals preferred All Stars spots**

Seven-time premiership winning and NRL All Stars coach, Wayne Bennett, has issued his preferred positions for the 64 players shortlisted for Stage Two of NRL All Stars voting, which opens at Midday AEDT (11am in Queensland) tomorrow at http://www.nrl.com/allstars" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and remains open until January 27, 2011.

Bennett now hands control of the team over to rugby league fans who face the challenge of selecting 16 players from the shortlist of 64 to join Australian captain Darren Lockyer and New Zealand captain Benji Marshall in the NRL All Stars side.

More than 21,000 fans took up the opportunity to play the role of selector and voted in Stage One, however, Stage Two poses some difficult decisions for fans who must now select just one player from each of the 16 NRL clubs in this next stage.

Bennett, who will blog with the public selectors on the make-up of the team on January 5 at Midday AEDT on http://www.nrl.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, said today: “I am asking the fans to think like a coach when they place each of the players into position and it isn’t going to be easy.

“I have said before that I will be starting Darren Lockyer at five-eighth and Benji Marshall at halfback, so I will be looking for players who can cover multiple positions.

“Someone like Todd Carney is a great utility player so I am glad that he has rated well in the first round of voting and I have made no secret of the fact that I want to see Cameron Smith as hooker.

“This is a game that all of the players will embrace and I hope we get the same spectacle as we did last year.”

Carney rated highest in the Roosters' voting for Stage One and says he is keen to be a part of the match.

“I'd love to be part of this team and it would mean a lot to me to know the fans had voted me in,” Carney said.

“You just have to look at some of the players up for selection to know any player in the NRL would want to be part of this squad.

“I really hope the public votes for me and I get the chance to take the field with the game's best players - it would be an incredible match to be part of.”

Bennett has assigned the following positions to the 64 shortlisted players:

Backs have been divided into three separate groups:
- Fullback – Specialist role
- Outside back – Includes centres and wings
- Inside back – A player who can play five-eighth or halfback

Forwards have also been divided into three categories:
- Tight forwards – A player who plays front-row and also second-row
- Edge forwards – A second-rower or lock that can play on both the right and left side edge of a team’s attack and defence
- Hooker – Specialist role

The coach wants at least three tight forwards in the starting line-up.

Bennett is also asking the fans to consider:
- Players marked as utility players have been designated on the basis of their ability to cover multiple positions
- The seven-man bench will require: two Tight Forwards, one Edge Forward, one Inside Back, one Outside Back, two Utilities.

Two players on the seven-man bench will be selected by NRL All Stars coach Wayne Bennett at the completion of Stage Two voting.

Not sure about my vote just yet….

I would've loved to see Heighno, Gibbo or Sauce on that list!

Bennett will pick Gareth for the novelty of coaching him one-off (after missing out in 2010)!!! (+ the inclusion of a Brit after Burgess' injury is a great PR move)!

i'm really surprised (but thankfull) Beau Ryan wasnt in there. Not for his footballing ability, but you would of thought is footy show shinanigans where worthy of a few votes.
Any of the 4 players mentioned will do us proud. I'd like to see Lawrence have a run, i think he could gain alot playing with the best in the game

Don't include me in the populist "we" spartan!!!!

I made one futile single call about what I would have preferred in a popularity contest & you try to burn me!! Not good form brother!!

Cronulla & Newcastle are likely to be represented by two blokes who are yet to play for them (Smith & Costigan)!!! That says enough to me about the collective intelligence of those voting!!!

Bennett makes the final choice for the squad after he also reduces the final 64 to 16 (one per club) for vote on January 11th!!! Plus aside from Marshall & Lockyer - he gets to bring another two onto the six man bench!!! (20-man squad)!
