NRL announces rule changes

These new rules are all well and good if the refs officiate the teams evenly, but we all know that never happens. Until the refs are fair to both teams during a match we’re never gonna see the game improve.

When is that ever going to happen.

I think the biggest one is the replacement of a so called injured player if the trainer signals the ref to stop the game to see to the player. No more cheap stoppages of play when opposition teams are rolling. It seemed like every team was trying to use this ploy last year

Mbye says only guy in our squad that could kick the 40m+ field goal is Doueihi

Need a referee clean out and just piss the bunker off all together .

The bunker has to be the most useless initiative ever implemented by the NRL. It beggars belief that those halfwits in the bunker can still get so many decisions completely wrong when they have the benefit of replay after replay after replay. Don’t even start me on the pedantics that govern some of their most bewildering decisions. It’s a complete blight on the game, imo.

the field goal over 40m will be interesting if team down 13 to 12 with 2 mins to go.
Playing the ball 40m out what do you do try to take a field goal at 41m and win 1r to 12 or push forward and hit one say 32m out for 13 all and golden point
it will be interesting

I like the idea of less scrums. Its not the scrum itself that annoys me but they take an age to set, then re-set then the team with the feed just gets it anyway.
Get rid of them.

Ummmmm we have just assembled the biggest heaviest pack in the history of the Wests Tigers and you want to scrap scrums when the balls goes out. Fast PTB when a ball goes out will disadvantage large packs.

he truly was the greatest in his prime before he left for rugby

We will end up Rugby union with these 2 point long field goals.
Glad Benji retired before he could have sprayed them wide all year.

Every year they always review the rules, trying to make the game more marketable. I wish they'd focus on consistency between referees on a week to week basis and even in calls made by the same referee. For me there's way too much subjectivity in a the decision made within a game, and barely any focus on the consistency. This is why decisions can appear so skewed, and thoughts of bias in the referee decisions are brought up.

Hopefully employing badger can help us get our head around these rules, and use them to our advantage.

To be honest, consistency across referees and games is over rated. I would much prefer refs to officiate with their own style and personality instead of trying to be identical and meet KPI's. When I played you would know what ref you had and knew some refs were harder on being offside than others, for example and adjust your game to suit.

Refs are human with different traits and personalities, some are more suited to being more authoritarian while others would be more suited to being game managers and letting the game flow. Trying to make them all the same is part of the reason officiating is at such a low.

I agree, not a sport in the entire world that has complete consistency amongst its refs. You'd think football/soccer could get it right because of their clout and simplified rule set, and yet they are plagued with inconsistencies and reffing controversies. Because they are human basically.

The 80s are recalled as halcyon days for rugby league, but referees back in the 80s had hugely variable personalities and styles. It used to make a big difference if you had Greg McCallum vs Eddie Ward vs Bill Harrigan.

I agree with @rustycage above, it will rarely be used. The 20/40 rule in 2020 - was it used ever? I never saw it executed. Same as touch-finder punts from 20m restarts - teams just aren't willing to risk it.

Imagine setting for a 2-pt FG from 41m down by 2? Surely you go for a try if you can. Or can you imagine a team down by 1-point going for a 2-point FG if they still have tackles up their sleeve? Surely they'd still move closer to the posts. I reckon there would be lucky to be more than 1 successful 40m FG per season.

Personally I reckon if the strategy is very rarely to be used, you shouldn't have a rule for it. 20/40s would only ever be a hail-mary, same with 2 point FGs. And we'd all have to remember that the option exists and look up the rule book if, on rare occasion, it's attempted.

I still don't know why we have 40/20s, why reward a team for putting the ball in touch? Previously I can understand it was attempting to keep the ball in play, but with tap restarts now, that's not an issue any more. Why should you award a team that can only get the ball to their own 40m before rocketing a kick at touch? But if you advance the ball to 60m line you have no similar option except trying to get it in the in-goal from 40m out.

The one rule that should have been looked at is If you cause a player to go off for a HIA via an illegal act the player causing the HIA should go off also but can be replaced by an Interchange player if the HIA is a failure both players stay off

The upside is it will increase the skillset of our halves. Some attempts at field goal have been fairly poor across the NRL.

You'd want the ruck 35m out or so with the kicker back 6m
