In fairness, I can't see the relevance of someones sexual preference or culture to the talent they have in the game. Can't we watch the spectacle rather than have politics shoved down our throat all the time...I just think people want a place they can go to get away from all the different opinions and just be brought together by something they have in common - the great game of Rugby League.

The girls in the ad are Karina Brown and Ness Foliaki. I went to uni with Karina and I played in her mixed touch team...I know her quite well and you won't find a nicer girl. Karina was included by us boys well before it was fashionable to gush over everything female or gay.

"Love is love" was used as a slogan during the plebiscite for same-sex marriage. This slogan appeared in the ad. I'm still unsure what same-sex marriage has to do with playing sport on the weekends.

Please don't give me the inclusiveness argument. If you've ever played team sports, you'll know your team mates have your back regardless of who you are. Sport is inherently inclusive - there's no old white guy trying to freaking prevent Aboriginals, women and gays from playing sport.

We don't need more political messaging! People get it at work, at home, on TV etc. Can't we just have one advert that isn't infected with some agenda?

and I bet the girls who are playing League would prefer their involvement in pushing the game forward is about their skills and abilities and NOT a trite image that in reality has ZERO to do with the game as I mentioned previously the ad should have focused on the game (the skills and abilities, the excitement the toughness) and not on PC images and divisiveness

So much drama over a stupid ad. I for one probably won't even ever see it again, as I dont watch free to air tv anymore. Unless the ad is on kayo.

I stated i didn't like the ad, thought it was too political, I'd prefer it to just be about the footy. Jirsky had some good comments, saying the ad was trying to show how footy is all inclusive, aimed at getting new people in, and showing footy isn't just for blue collar beer swelling bogans anymore.

I'm not offended, I just thought they could have done better. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Considering how bad they've done in other areas of the game, frankly I'm surprised they didn't do a lot worse.

But a person can say they don't llike something, and they are not necessarily outraged, or offended, or whatever. This is a forum, you're meant to be able to say what you think here, as long as you're respectful to what others think, it's all good.

It was more inclusive when people of all persuasions could just go to watch a game without an agenda being thrown in. Yet another example of a great thing in our lives that has been politicised. It's really sad.

Nobody on here and nobody reading the back pages of the SMH or DT, or logged into the NRL website, fails to be aware that there is a NRL 2020 season coming up soon, nor that it involves footballers tackling each other. The NRL does not need to advertise to its core market, but it does show little snippets of supporter bases, some Tigers on the hill at LO etc. Just little snippets to whet the appetite of the existing supporter.

No, the NRL ads are primarily to appeal to the non-core rugby league followers - women, minorities, immigrants, children. The people who don't really follow NRL, who wouldn't know that the new season is starting. The ads are intentionally showing diversity and emphasising inclusiveness and rights of minorities - they are appealing to those who don't feel part of the "average" rugby league supporter base. Yeah it might be a bit heavy-handed in that regards, but there are plenty of morons out there and sometimes it doesn't pay to be subtle or clever.

If you want an ad about just big boofheads tackling each other and doing sit-ups, then transport yourself back to the 1980s and watch those old ads.

And I think you are also hugely misguided to think that the NRL is not and should never be politicised. There is literally no large organisation in this country that doesn't have some form of politicisation, whether it's because they are publicly-owned, dealing with shareholders or trying to appear to advertisers. The motive that has the NRL putting female footballers and Aboriginals front and centre in ads is the same motive that has the Rugby Union banning Izzy Folau, or AFL banning racist fans, or cricket suspending ball tamperers - it's all about maintaining the reputation of your brand. It's the same motive that had the NRL hiring Macklemore, or starting women's football, or publicly supporting same-sex marriage, or initiating women's round or running the All Stars game.

Do you think the NRL hosts the All-Stars game for some altruistic rationale, or some power-broker at Foxtel demands it, or because it pulls huge audiences? Hell no, it's 100% about recognition of a small but core contingent of the NRL's workforce (~12% indigenous), appealing to future indigenous juniors and smart business for brand management.

I happen to know quite a bit about car advertising.

The reality is, vehicle ads showcase what you can do with the car and they have a target market in mind. Families are there to show that the car can fit your family. Alternatively, cars geared towards off-roading show people driving off-road or loading it up with camping gear etc. I think most people can get their head around this.

They certainly don't throw an agenda in there like "love is love" just for the hell of it primarily because it's not relevant to the product.

I can't think of a time when you've agreed with anything I've said, so I don't expect you to agree with this, but thought I'd throw it out there.
