@ElleryHanley the only people who think he was rubbish this year were tigers supporters. He got a Centre of the year nom for gods sake . The general perception is that he’s an international center willing to go to NQ. I don’t agree with what youre saying , at all . If youre a general douchebag on slightly above league median wage of 310k (425k) , then a team can take a hit for you languishing . We just did it with packer , and last year McQueen.
It’s hardly a recipe for success at the negotiation table , as your overall value drops as well , and despite there being some really bad operators out there , clubs generally arnt in the charity business when it comes to players salarys

So, basically if you play really well all season.........like Matterson......and ask for an upgrade, it is a mortal sin.

But if you play terrible all season, give away two tries in the season deciding game.......like Esan...........and ask for an upgrade, it is applauded and everyone celebrates when you leave with a huge upgrade?

Did you actually read what The Pom said? Two completely different approaches. One management ( without spilling their guts to all and sundry) approaches club about **EXTENSION** and possible upgrade for next year. Player plays a long period of time through the season on an ankle that requires surgery. WT can't/wont match long term deal financially and respectfully grant a release.
The other management tells anyone who will listen their player wants release even though the club said they would look at an upgrade and extension which was immediately shut down by said players management. Allegedly poor little Ryan doesn't like to play injured and the big nasty Madge likes his players to play if possible as the TEAM needs them. This management team plays everything out publicly and has shown zero class. Massive difference mate, and the peoples feelings are reflected in that.

Strong rumour Marsters was released to further top up Mbyes contract.

Yeah, and there looking at extending Packers contract to 10 years and a further increment of 1 million each year for the term of the contract. Lol

@ElleryHanley it’s pretty clear now , that Matterson was causing problems all year . He also bailed on the team in the final week , and generally speaking , by the amount of info I’ve pieced together through different stories was generally unliked.
If what POM says is true , then I’m sure the Cowboys offered Marsters a kings ransom prior to him being given permission, thus provoking him going in for the chat . Marsters was also off contract after next year , so unlike Matterson (another 2 ) his future was not secured .
The moral of the story , don’t be an absolute douchebag , and general Morale Assassin ,so when you come cap in hand asking for the more the general mood isn’t “pull your head in champ “.

Tend to agree with this assessment / conclusion.
I’m afraid that no matter how good you are and how great your potential is, if you don’t fit into the playing group (and from what I heard he just didn’t) best thing for both parties is to part company.
Well soon see how Matterson stuff plays out.

Sure it wasn't to top up Reynolds' contract?

It was to support Packers bonus.....

it's not as though he's done a matterson.....

the guy got offered silly money to play in FNQ, and he took it....good for him

apart from a few mistakes he did well for us

good luck to him

Another great prospect ( yes he was one of our best players) let go - he may not have played his best this season,, but I did hear that he was playing with an injury - I am anxious to see who will be his replacement.

I am concerned that these players leave our club and go on to play fantastic footy for another club - why is that:scream_cat:

Im betting it's because we have never kept them into their prime.

Most players that Tigers let go don't go on to anything. We are a middle to bottom club most years, so we aren't usually letting go of players of high quality in the first place.

But literally, you can count on one, maybe two hands the players that we misjudged and let go, who became really good - Fifita, O'Donnell come to mind. JAC, though he jumped ship too early to truly count in.

Then there are the players over whom we have no control, because they receive massive offers or want to play in clubs that are on a premiership tilt - Tedesco, Woods, Paps, Taupau.

There are the players we didn't have any choice in releasing - Suli, Lodge, Rob Lui, Tim Simona.

And then another 200 hundred or so players that we let go, who did absolutely nothing more in their careers. In just the previous 3 completed seasons up to 2018 - Idris, McIlwrick, Joel Edwards, JJ Felise, Tim Grant, LJL, Kyle Lovett, Frozone, Rankin, Ava, Bayley Siro, MWZ, Mahe, Pita Godinet, Tui Lolohea, Buchanan, Cherrington, Asipeli Fine, Justin Hunt, Nathan Milone, Jesse Sue.

So odds are very much stacked against players leaving Tigers and becoming superstars. Some folks seem to remember as 1 or 2 instances as being "standard", when actually they are the exception.

We also let go two others who played for Manly in the semis and two who played for Souths. All good players. Tutola, Douhey etc.

In total over ten ex Tigers played in this year's semi finals, so people do have a point.

Not on the point you are suggesting.

Tatola and Doueihi are average footballers. Not bad, but average. Souths didn't play finals because of Tatola and Doueihi, they played finals because of Bennett, Burgess, Walker, Reynolds, Cook.

It would be like Titans fans saying that Max King played finals in 2019, which he did, but he only played finals because he moved to the Storm.

If Elijah Taylor moved to Melbourne Storm next year, odds are he'd also play finals footy, even if he's a respectably average footballer at this stage in his career.

Roosters and Titans both had two ex-players running around for Canberra in the GF (BJ Leilua and Soliola, Rapana and Sezer) this year, but I wouldn't be saying that Roosters and Titans have a habit of releasing super players. It just ended up that a few of their ex-players made their way into a side that came good. If Tigers signed any of those 4 players, we'd be saying "yeah they are alright but not superstars".

@jirskyr said in [Official: Esan leaving](/post/1071055) said:

That's a bit harsh. Tatola is young for a prop and I know he is thought of highly at Souths. He is definitely a player we should have kept. Douehi found his position at fullback and looked very good in the finals. He also is a player we should have kept.

I disagree on the Souths pair, particularly Doueihi. I rate him highly, but lets see.

We do need better roster management though mate, I do not think that is debatable. Packer four years for 2-3 million whilst Tatola could have been had for 1/4 of the price.
