So, let's see - 60 run metres, 14 tackles, 10 hit ups. Looks pretty average to me.
Like I said, its not all about stats - leadership is important. However, they are not great statistics for a starting front rower, and when you are only on the field for about 40 minutes, how much leadership are you really providing?

To be fair for the time he was on the field those are good stats for whatever reason he didn’t play much despite normally playing around twice as much as he did last week. When he’s out there he gets through a lot of work

So you are basing your assessment on one game? Ill do that too
45 mins 20 Hitups 207 metres 37 tackles. Looks pretty good to me.

On Tamou's efforts last night, we'd have been better off keeping Huth. Same player, just cheaper.
Having said that, I have no idea about his leadership qualities, but most seem to think him an excellent captain. At any rate, 2 years ain't too onerous. (Well, not compared to Packer/Reynolds/McQueen et al).

The Fact we have signed the Captain of the team that won the Minor Premiership and is likely to win the premiership will go a long way to Signing up other top line players
I think it was a very smart move
Its a little like when we signed Todd Payten

If only he also had half the skill of Payten.

He’s a lot better than Payten.

Don’t see that myself

Tamou has played for Australia and NSW. Payten wasn’t even in the discussion for origin at any point. That says it all.

Maybe because he was in the team that won the comp, people’s memories fade.

Why do people keep bringing up past accolades to justify recruitment? Today he's a plodder, don't buy him.

Yep, starting prop and captain of the best team in the comp, has lost ONE game all year. Definitely a plodder.

I’m not going to bother arguing this one any further.

He’s good enough to lead the best team in the comp who have lost one game all year, who wanted to keep him beyond this season. Not good enough for us though. Us with our decade long finals drought. We stick our noses up at potential premiership winning captains.

Ivan’s giving him his last Hoo rah ...

Panthers offered him ONE year as a token gesture

We were dumb enough to give him TWO years

Clutching much ?

Plodder

OMG 2 years. The humanity. The Raiders signed Ryan James. Could only imagine what you’d have said if that were us.

He'd say he's a plodder - everyone is a plodder to ol' mate Hobbo. Lol

Wait!...... I think there was someone mentioned in 1998 that wasn't a plodder, just a nuffie.

Yeah Brad Fittler I think it was

No, I am not. My opinion is that he is a reasonable footballer at club level week in and week out. However, that's about his ceiling. He was absolutely woeful at SOO level, and his game on the weekend when the pace and toughness goes up a notch, was less than breathtaking. He has no second gear. The Wests Tigers may benefit some from his leadership off the field - from all reports he has that in spades. So that is a positive. However, I don't think he will add anything in terms of his effectiveness on the field over and above a couple of players that have been shown the door.
He's OK - that's it in my opinion.

Yet you used one games stats to prove that, that is just a stupid way to look at a footballer. 45 mins 20 Hitups 207 metres 37 tackles are his stats from another game.

I am not trying to "prove' anything. I am stating my opinion - that's all. And yes, I used one game's statistics to give a little credence to that opinion. It was a big game. If he was as good a player as many on here appear to think,, they should have been better in a big game like a semi final.

The official West’s Tigers Forum Plodder Scale .. This week brought you by Kosciusko pale ale ..
This weeks feature player ...

James Tamou

Speed 4/5
Explosiveness 4/5
Ability 4/5
Experience/ number of games 2/5
Wrongness of head 5/5

Score 19/25

The higher the score the more effective ploddering ..

Result ....Plodder

It gives no credence though, its a one off. He will probably go for more than 150 mtrs in the next game.

He seems to be a well grounded individual with no off field indiscretions that have made the front page of the Australian. That has to be worth a tick.

He appears to have learnt from that. I can't recall him being in the media for the wrong reasons.

All the good sides have a player like Tamou. They plug the middle, take dirty hit ups, seldom make a mistake and show the way for others to follow. Agreed he is at the back end of his career, but two year contract on reasonable money has to equate to a very good signing. Iam not expecting his Penrith stats with us as he will not have the quality around him but he is better than anything we have

He’ll always be labelled a plodder, that’s just how he plays. Doesn’t mean he’s bad he’ll do the 1% stuff, tough carries, work hard to make his tackles, find his front.

The big question is how will he hold up in a much weaker team. His experience will be invaluable but more important is how he goes on the field. I don’t think he will provide the same stats he has this year which is my worry but hopefully he gets us a good 100 metres or more a game.

At least we know he’s a hard worker. He won’t slack off that’s for sure

Cannot agree with the first of that, as I remember Tamou as a very different beast when he came into grade, with impact and pace that he hasn't possessed for a long time. Didn't he have a neck or back injury that changed him?

Edit; sorry, misread the first bit.

I meant by people on here. I don’t think he’s a plodder at all but a lot of people just want props to smash people otherwise you’re a plodder. Even last year he scored some nice tries and made line breaks.

Sorry, you seem to have gotten in before I re-read and edited my post above.

He is a whatever signing to me at the mentioned dollars, which I see little risk in working out as a plus or a minus. If he excels, great, we got a bargain, does his job, fine, if not, oh well, only two years at middle of the road money.

Yeah I completely agree. There’s a low chance he turns out to be a bad signing which is a good thing for us.

Tamou was only on for 26 minutes, at the start when its hardest to make the metres, the Roosters also had more possession at that time and Tamou missed no tackles.
