what's the point in developing juniors like this kid and TMM etc?
Because you also end up with players like Tedesco, Moses, Brooks, Woods, Suli, Sue, Nofo, Liddle, Felise, Tatola, Marsters, Sironen, Marshall, Farah, Fulton, Gibbs, O'Neill, Galea, Dwyer, Lui, Lawrence, Fifita, Koroibete… you get the point.
We are sitting on a huge junior nursery, why would we abandon it just because some clubs who have little to no nursery step in occasionally sign some players up. Only problem with not developing your own kids is you always get second bite at the cherry and you can't work the loyalty angle straight away, you have to have some other selling points like Storm (coach and culture) or Roosters (brown paper bags).
We are associated with football clubs whose sole purpose is to develop junior talent. Would you really want to disassociate with Magpies JRLFC and Balmain JRLFC from the occasional angst of losing a Pap or a Hoffman.
Personally I'd be happy to do away with club-associated junior footy if the NRL ever decide to take it all over, take over all local footy codes and control the influx of players from junior areas into NRL (this likely comes hand-in-hand with a draft). My gut tells me that day is coming, the now-cashed-up NRL are already doing things like buying The Immortals from RLW, essentially merging with Touch Football Australia etc.
