All the talk is about money with Mick Potter or lack of ,seems to me this guy has something to prove and will wait for the larger slice down the track so as to get a start. Motivated rings in my ears and this sounds very good to me . I am not worried at all about being a bit behind the field at this stage as the broader team base will be motivated to impress the new coach, just waiting to see if any trainers etc have been moved on as I think some should of been.

Expect a formal announcement within 48 hours - Mick Potter to coach @Wests_Tigers in 2013-15\. #donedeal

Best news ever cant wait for next year.

Mick Potter has already been in contact with members of the Wests Tigers backroom staff ahead of his expected unveiling as the NRL club's new head coach later this week.

Potter is set to succeed 2005 premiership-winning mentor Tim Sheens, whose 10-year tenure with the joint-venture club came to an abrupt end last month when he was relieved of his coaching duties with two years left on his contract after the side failed to make the 2012 finals.

Sheens has been offered a new senior role at the club, though there has been no confirmation to date as to whether he will accept the position.

After initially being linked to Manly assistant coach Matt Parish, Potter - the former Catalans, St Helens and Bradford head coach - has emerged as the man to lead the Tigers in a new direction.

It is believed he will sign a two-year deal with the club.

Potter, 49, will have a battle ahead of him as he attempts to placate fans and sponsors unhappy with the direction of the financially embattled club.

The Tigers were early premiership favourites for the 2012 season before inconsistent performances ensured they failed to make the top eight.

Sheens' unpopular decision to offload Beau Ryan and Chris Heighington resulted in a backlash from the playing group, while NSW hooker Robbie Farah - once considered part of the furniture at the Tigers - has been linked with a move to Parramatta in 2014.

New Zealand captain Benji Marshall is another whose future at the Tigers has also been the subject of increased scrutiny.

Potter comes highly regarded, having served his apprenticeship with four years as St George Illawarra's Premier League coach.

He then had six years as a head coach in the Super League, steering Catalans to the 2007 Challenge Cup final when the former St George captain was named Super League coach of the year.

There needs to be some context to the change in coach. For all the vitriol sheens copped on this forum over the years, I have serious doubts many other coaches would have been able to manage spending only 90% of their salary cap and maintain competitiveness the way he did. Let's face it, in a time where the storm rorted the system (along with most other clubs) successful clubs are always the ones with the deepest pockets. The only two yrs the tigers spent their full cap we made top 4 both yrs. every other yr we fell over at the death. Without the backing of a wealthy owner or leagues club, the tigers have always relied on sponsorship coming in on the back of playing attractive football - hence the ridiculous number of FTA games we have received over the past 5 years
Potter will need all the luck he can get, he may need to paint the gym again!

What a story on our future Coach from the SMH instead of the DT!….must be true then!...then again it does say "likely"

Umm, doesn't your post just highlight the ignorance of Sheens. Don't chase marquee players and only spend 90% of your cap = no finals. Chase some decent players and spend what you're permitted = finals.

:crazy

I'm glad we're going with someone experienced, rather than a novice like Parish, or even Walters. The role of coach for the next few seasons will be much more than just the weekly team preparation. As the article says, fans and sponsors are feeling very nervous at the moment, and the coach will also need to deal with the intense scrutiny that will be placed on the future of Farah and Benji. Considering Potter dealt with some tough times during Bradford's financial problems, I hope he can take us through this period with a positive outcome.

Not quite - point being that spending a limited cap was a decision made based on limited funds. Do you seriously believe that an nrl coach would not spend the entire cap if he had a choice?

who knows if this is true we have been told so much BS from media and our own board ill just wait and see i am so pxxxxx off with the whole thing.

My only point is that we are not a clean skin in this department. We have been fined for exceeding the cap a number of times.

Brah this is the first time its all over the media his our coach thats it.

At least Melbourne got it right. They won a couple of comps with their illegal team. Sheens couldn't even win when cheating!

Ive often thought what would a change in playing style do for our following, its true the razzle dazzle, high risk, high ball movement, touch footy style weve adopted since 05 has attracted a huge number of new fans….its the sort of footy a novice footy fan can easily attract, purists may not be so enamoured with it and personally I love a 'forward dominated get on top of opposing pack and grind em into the dirt, then let the backs do their stuff ' type game....for a long time Ive had to admire that in other teams only, very very very rarely have I seen my team play that way
If Potter can get the best out of the spine that will be his best hope

Your not alone!

No…. Yr not. I've said before, I HAVE to have faith that this turmoil was for a greater good. I just hope wat ever the plan is, it works, cause ppl are ready to walk. I know my interest in baseball and nfl has risen significantly.

SMH seem certain

WESTS TIGERS officials are set to end their month-long hunt for a new coach by appointing Mick Potter to replace Tim Sheens today.

Potter, this season's Super League coach of the year, has been interviewed twice by a subcommittee appointed to oversee the search following Sheens's sacking on September 25.

Melbourne assistant Kevin Walters was also given a second interview but the Herald has been told that Potter was the more impressive of the pair and he is understood to have been offered a two-year deal.

While it was considered that Walters had served a good apprenticeship under Wayne Bennett at Brisbane and Craig Bellamy at the Storm, Potter was described as ''more polished'' and ''professional'' and officials believe he would better at dealing with the media and sponsors.

Potter also boasts an impressive CV from his seven years as a head coach in Super League with Catalans, St Helens and Bradford.

After leaving his role as assistant to Nathan Brown at St George Illawarra to be the founding coach of Catalans in 2006, Potter steered the French club to the Challenge Cup final in his second season and third place in Super League the following year.

He left to take charge of St Helens and took the club to back-to-back grand finals in 2009 and 2010 before spending the past two seasons with Bradford.

Despite being placed in administration midway through this season, the Bulls would have made the Super League finals if they had not been docked six competition points for their financial woes. Bradford's new owners wanted Potter to stay on as coach next season but he decided to return home to Australia in the hope of finding a job in the NRL.

Tigers officials had hoped to resolve the stand-off with Sheens over a new role at the club before announcing his replacement but with pre-season training due to start early next month it is felt they cannot wait much longer.

After deciding to bring Sheens's decade-long reign to an end after the club failed to make the finals this year, the Tigers offered him an undefined role but for less money.

However, Sheens believes he is entitled to the $450,000 a season he would have been paid for the remaining two years of his contract as head coach.

Sheens, who took the Tigers to premiership success in 2005, has indicated that he is not interested in another role at the club but wants a full payout to leave.

However, the Tigers cannot afford to pay Sheens $900,000 to walk away and hire a new coach to replace him - even if they are only offering half the money the Australian Test coach is receiving.

That's getting closer to a confirmation I guess. Still no quote marks though. (Yes I may be refusing to see the obvious but i put $100 on Walters when he was paying $7.00 goddamnit!)
