Premier Perrottet backs renewal of suburban NRL grounds

Peter V’landys’ push to revitalise suburban rugby league grounds has support at the top of NSW government, writes Phil Rothfield.

New Premier Dominic Perrottet has backed the Peter V’landys plan to revitalise Sydney’s suburban NRL grounds.

The Premier is a mad Wests Tigers fan who loves a Sunday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval or any of the traditional old grounds, rather than the big empty stadiums that lack atmosphere.

He has a framed and signed 2005 Wests Tigers premiership-winning jersey on his wall at home.

“As a diehard Wests Tigers fan, I appreciate there is nothing like watching a match from one of our iconic suburban stadiums,” the Premier said. “We’re committed to revitalising sporting stadiums across Sydney to make sure they are match-fit for the community’s changing needs.”

The NSW Budget (2021-22) included $8m to develop a final business case for the suburban stadiums strategy to enable the government to commence the development of one stadium by 2023.

Brookvale Oval, Liverpool and Penrith have been mentioned as the likely venues now that support for Kogarah Oval has dropped off.

V’landys has been close to Perrottet for some time. The premier has been often seen in the Racing NSW chief executive’s director’s suite at Randwick on big race days.

“Having families in Sydney attend suburban grounds is imperative to the future popularity of the game,” V’landys said.

“That’s what tribalism is about. Suburban grounds have an important role to play and should be upgraded for today’s entertainment venue standards.”

The government has warned new facilities would cater for all sports, not just rugby league.

“Any redevelopments would need to include the creation of multi-use facilities that benefit as many people and local communities as possible, and a final business case for the work would need to stack up before we’d consider going ahead,” Perrottet said.

The cost of building each new venue would be about $250m, but would be a huge post-Covid boost for jobs in the building industry.

As a mad Wests Tigers fan Dominic Perrottet popularity would have gone up in a lot of people's eyes, whilst nothing untoward would likely happen on his watch after poor Gladsy"s episode it doesn't hurt to have friends in high places

Hopefully the LNP slush fund is fully loaded to throw megabucks at Leichhardt Oval at the next election, they could start by throwing 100m at it on monday after all it is a marginal seat

The Greens MP for Balmain won 42% of the primary vote at the last election, with the Lib candidate a distant third. I wouldn't describe it as a marginal seat.

If it gets us our own stadium I'm for anything. Until we're not reliant on the money we get from playing at 5 home grounds we're not a legitimate team.

In all honesty a Liverpool Stadium is a good fit whilst training at concord CE. A game or 2 at LO and CS for nostalgia.

Whilst recognising our great history of two combined clubs, WTs really need to embrace the future the future and a single identity.

That's great news. The Libs have got an amazing record at both state and federal level for doling out grants to sports clubs. And from all reports you don't even have to put up much of a case to justify getting one.

There is/was also John Brogden, Barry O'Farrell and Darcy Byrne. The latter is the biggest WT fan of the lot.

Am I interpreting this correctly? Does this mean Leichhardt will get its much-needed makeover? Will this mean it could be our one and true home ground? I love the South West, it's a vital part of who we are but Leichhardt with modern facilities could be what we've been waiting for...
