Quick Stat for all the Benji Haters of 2012

Before this season i, and others, often defended Benji's form in 2012 and stated that it was alright. Maybe not as good as in 2010/11 but it was still good. And the stat we used was that he topped the NRL try assists with 37 from memory. Then others would counter and say but I bet he also got the most errors. Which is true, he go around 40 off the top of my head.

Well, if you take a look at Reynolds and JT's stats from this season. And both, especially adam have been in great form:

A. Reynolds - 18 try assists (1st) - 23 errors (1st)
JT - 13 Try assists (3rd) - 23 errors (equal 1st)

Now, i'm not trying to say benji in 2012 was better than Reynolds or JT but people really tore him apart last season on the forum. And those were his stats with Sheens putting him at 7 all the time and without a consistent halves partner. However, he did have a decent forward pack unlike this year.
 
From memory I think Benji had about 60 odd errors last season. It was in an article I read earlier in the season.

Much more miss than hit. But until someone finds the stats there's no pint discussing it further…

Also, almost 100 missed tackles, blair at almost 80\. That's pretty pathetic, but the team as a whole averaged 36 a game so 900 a season. We're more like 25 or so this season i'd say.

Pretty sure phyr3 figures are right The try assists and errors were almost the same when I checked them

stats are crap really , if you need stats to tell you whether a play maker is going well or not you know there is an issue
 
you can't judge a player with just a quick stat.

the trouble for benji is that he hasn't developed his weaknesses into strengths.
kicking has been poor,defense has been poor.i thought he turned the corner in 2010 but it has really dropped off the last 2 years.

the poor options at critical parts of the game.

with the lack of production with the ball he has nothing to fall back on.
there isn't enough positives that outweigh the negatives.
 
Well, if he's creating tries i don't see the issue? His defense has always been an issue, it is for most halves. JT is also a poor defender, more missed tackles than blair this season I believe.

He's been poor this season, no doubt. But I feel he was decent last season.

again,you come up with only one part of the game.evaluation isn't about just one part,it is everything combined.
as for last year,my grade wasn't as harsh as alot of others.but i also wasn't over the moon when adding up the negatives in his game.

as for the future,doesn't make business sense to increase pay while production is in decline and not likely to reach it's peak again.
 
Point scoring plays are the ones that matter most, and Benji topped the league in that dept, He made too many errors and didnt defend that well, but leading the league in Try assists IMO automatically lifts you to at least the top quartile of players, yet on here he was treated like a dud, he was not.

Problem is everyone wants to lable every one a star or hopeless, most plyers sit somewhere in between. Benji showed star qualities with some flaws.

It is alot harder to find someone who does what Benji does than it is to find someone to make a million tackles.

He set up about 5 or 6 tries in probably the parra game alone. When he's on, he's on- which is probably 4 or 5 games a season against weaker oppositions.

Benji wants to get paid like a star but not play like one. He has regularly costed us more games than won

I know you have already been quoted on this post mate, and Im not picking you out personally…

The real issue is not that he isnt a good provider of assists, creative, but that he has cost alot of field position, hence putting oppositions in scoring range all the while limiting out attacking possibilities. Recently he has turned that around I admit, but the Thurstons, Reynolds, Smiths, Cronks, Carneys.... they all get the average play calls right, they kick long, they dont force unnescessary passes... Benji needs to know when to unleash the beast and when to keep him chained. People lay the blame on not having a legitimate no.7 to hand feed him the ball only when they expect magic, though the honest to god truth is that if he took a few tackles he would actually have defenders in 2 minds and release those around him with flick passes, had a decent long kicking game defences would be forced to drop men back and his short kicks more often viable, could play first or second receiver honestly that way his shonky balls would be sold amongst standard play.

He is the guy you play poker against and is all in on every hand... well he was until recently. To take the pot, you have to sell the bluff. Benji never understood this.

Parra decided not to tackle that night at Cambo, it was touch footy…Benji in his element
