Rd 3. What's acceptable?

G'day tigeress: You may well be correct, but if the players are 'down on confidence' this early in the season there must be something seriously wrong going on behind the scenes.
Could it be that they are down on confidence because they can't win a match !
Why they can't win is a mystery to me....Could it be that they are not good enough yet, or they haven't gelled, I wish we knew the answer.!
I still can't understand why something going on behind the scenes should make any difference, they are coached to play well, but they are not playing well, and haven't played well for 11 years.
However there's always the next game, lets see how that goes they may surprise us all

I hope they do win,but the only thing acceptable to me is that Sheens tells Benji to take a back seat, get the note pad and pen and start taking notes,Sheens is head coach and he needs to start producing to his reputed skills Benji is the APPRENTICE,look and learn Benji ...
Sheens really has to take responsibility for these last performances,he needs to show all and sundry why he was prefered over other coaching applicants....its that simple....

I am not sure the effort is really there as some are posting. Last week against an opposition who had every right to lose, we had only one player in the top 6 for run metres.
I don’t remember seeing any true 110% “effort on effort” type plays from us, or guys desperate to dive on a ball or chase a kick, or support a player, or rally in D to throw their opposite over the sideline etc.
Our guys did not run hard enough nor did they tackle hard enough. They didn’t play the ball fast enough or push forward in attack nearly enough.
That is the absolute basic stuff an NRL side needs to do to win and we are not doing it.
The disappointing thing is that this is so obvious but they still don’t fix it. You have to ask yourself why?
When I watch them play, I see something missing. Enthusiasm for the challenge, desire.
That’s what beat us, Knights had it and we didn’t.
Knights had their 2 best players taken out early from their spine, but Hastings and Gamble stood up. It was their infectious enthusiasm which won the game for them.
You simply don’t get high error counts when you’re up for the challenge. The coaches need to find out where the speed bumps are and remove them.

For me the win matters more than the performance, even though the Sunday game would have still infuriated me if we jagged a win, it wouldn't have impacted our season. Now if we play really well and lose in GP, it leaves us 0-3.

Let's pretend it's just cohesion and we improve later in the year. Starting 0-3 means we're out off contention for the 8 imo.

Is anything other than a win acceptable?
The fact that we are 2 rounds in and contemplating this question is a reflection of expectations, which leads to more pressure on the club. I am not so concerned with a win, or even making the eight tbh. So long as I see us putting in, that's all I can look forward to. The gap between the "good" teams and us is still very wide, and it will take some time to bridge it. If we lose, are we all going to turn our attention to another sport? I think we should admire players that are willing to fight through difficult situations and triumph over whatever obstacles are in their paths. But this won't happen overnight. On or OFF the field.

He clearly stated on more than one occasion that he did not want to be captain.
Making him captain against his wishes is definitely something we could expect from a wooden spoon club.
Meanwhile we had an existing player who wanted to be captain in Doueihi, but for some reason he was overlooked?
Really, AD Captain?

With his deficiencies?

He may want it but he is not up for it.

We still lack leadership. Not just from the captain but from the core group.

One time Brooks crabbed across the field (which wasn’t great) but at least he was looking for a runner. Every player needs to want it and expect to get it…not one player put their hand up.

Sometimes it’s not always about having a captain because he’s the best player, scores the most tries or whatever. There has to be a strong consideration giving players what they want the most, what it takes to improve a players performance and that of others in the team.
Maybe that’s why the coaching team decided on Api? Following a strong player vote?
I don’t think it worked with James Tamou.
When players come to us at the end of their careers for big dollars, are they really looking for that level of involvement and responsibility?
IDK? Hope I’m wrong about that.

I think Doueihi was probably overlooked as captain on account of being shithouse.

Wouldn't surprise me if they get a comfortable win just to give us an inkling of hope again, then revert back to norm the following week for the rest of the season.

Fair point, I find it hard to be reasonable for several days after our games, but now 5 days after the last effort I see the wisdom in what you're saying....until 6.00 pm Sunday🤪

I hear you and I think it can work with the right player.

I spent 35 years in the Army and have studied leadership closely. What I have leaned is that you can coach leadership, but you can't make a leader. You can appoint someone - but that just sets a low standard that others will emulate.

Let me caveat my next few points. I am not involved with the club or playing group so everything I am about to say is from what I have heard from AD in interviews, from third hand information and my observations of him on the field.

From what I gather, AD does all the things off the field and around the club that demonstrates that he has leadership potential. He also clearly understands what leadership is about and has great intentions. The litmus test for leadership is when you operate under duress. Fortunately players are under duress every week so you can confidently identify leaders.

I have seen plenty of parade ground soldiers wearing rank and who look great in a pressed uniform. They say all of the right things to all of the right people and are placed in charge of the lives of young soldiers because, on paper, they have the right leadership qualities. I put AD into this category. Unfortunatley, some of these guys (and girls) completely fall apart on operations and the real leaders are unearthed.

In our game you can test leadership weekly. Unfortunately AD, for all his good intentions and desires, he is not an on field leader. He tries too hard to lead and takes on too much responsibility and in doing so misses all of the things that would make him excel. He doesn't do the 1%ers, he fades out of games and appears disinterested and his basic skills in defence, at 5/8, are appalling. So although AD has some very good leadership traits; he can't be a leader.

You can appoint him as a leader, but you will get exactly what you promote. Players won't do the 1%ers because the Captain is not setting the standard. He can't pull others up, because he isn't doing it himself. If he wants to be a leader he needs to take a good look in the mirror and check the reality of what is staring back at him. If he works hard, he could be the Tigers Captain - but he needs to do a lot of work.

Leadership finds the individual - not the other way around. If AD can develop himself as an individual - leadership roles may follow. But for now he is a follower!

Yeh, I hear what you’re saying Jolls and having had a taste as a nasho I can relate to the points you’ve made. What’s the answer though? In a team of followers?
