Richards a liability

I think that anyone who thinks Richards wasn't a concern last year didn't watch many games. I doubt he makes the team on form excluding his kicking game. His kicking game is great but is it good enough to allow us to have a slow winger who is only going to finish off really good opportunities that any bog average first grade winger is expected to finish off.

I don't think his kicking game carried him last year and I doubt it will this year.

Relax, the season hasn't even started and the experts are already talking about his poor form. Give the guy a chance

Richards trial form from last night; Another 60 plus meter drop kick and a try and conversions. defensively sound.
He must be our forwards favourite backs, with his long range kicking. It saves our forwards so much energy when your playing in the oppositions half. Instead of a players like Taupau/Sue/Sirro having to do hit ups on the 2nd and 3rd tackle to get out of our half, they will get more opportunities to make line breaking runs on the 4th and 5th in the oppositions half.
As an ex forward I would have loved to have had a player with Richards skills on my team. Rather than another little quick winger that looks flash, dances around a couple of players , then gets dragged over the sideline or bent backwards in the tackle so there so no go forward on the next tackle.
Richards experience and size will be vital. Plus he has one of the highest percentage goal kickers in the NRL.

No ones saying he excels in every aspect….I dont thin k we have too many of those players, they all have their weaknesses....and strengths

He also let in the only try by letting a no name winger strip the ball one on one off him

lol By that logic…the 4 he saved by being safe under the Highball and defusing 2 grubbers don't count...we lost.... :unamused:

Wingers get a bum rap when try's are scored against them from kicks...what happened in the other 5 play's that put the opposition in the position to attack....

Yes geo…correct...Matt Utai will testify to that....the preceding set is dismissed, only the end play recalled....its a team sport many seem to forget that

A winger like you describe hasn't existed in the NRL for 10 years, actually they have and we had the only one, Daniel Fitzhenry. Every winger these days is 6ft and 100kgs. David nofoaluma is ten times better at returning the ball then Richards, he is also a million times better at finishing then Pat. I can remember one time last year where Pat beat a player one on one to score, against the raiders.

People are still way too caught up in the Pat Richards who fended off Jensen to score in the 05 GF. It was an amazing play and memory that will still be talked about in 50 years time. However that is 10 years ago and rugby league has changed immensely. There aren't 5'9 85kg lock forwards coming across in cover anymore. Richards doesn't have (or use it properly) the size/strength that you all think he has in the modern game.

I have said that his boot is an amazing asset, no one can dispute that. Come round 1 he deserves to be there and trust me, I hope he has an amazing year, no one will be cheering him more then me if he steaks down the side line (I just hope he doesn't kick it infield like he did most if the time last year). However as far as wing play goes Richards is on the same level as a guy like David Williams. You'll all jump up and down and say it's crap but take his kicking game away and he doesn't leave us with much.

100% spot on.

He is an ordinary winger now. He might improve but how likely is that to happen. I'll answer that question - its extremely unlikely.

Richards is a liability at this point in his career. The question is do we have enough outside backs who can score points and make busts to carry Richards for his kicking game. I don't think we do but if we do and we have a great season and Richards kicking game gets us across the line in a couple of games I'll be ecstatic.

 he's survived the Sheens era , he's seen off the robbiegate and the Potter era …

He's our "LAST MAN STANDING ".
