Transfer fees would fix the issue and stop this nonesense in its tracks. There is no cost in doing this now, that's why it has become so prevelent and the agents and players are getting away with it.

Can’t see transfer fees being a restraint of trade anymore, you are just ensuring players adhere to their contract and if the don’t the club is compensated appropriately. It works in many sports. Times have changed, it’s needed to stop players dogging on their contact without consequences aka Moses, and now Bateman.

Clubs have been just as guilty of not fulfilling contracts with players - maybe not monetary wise - but certainly actively move them on if they become surplus to needs and or no longer what is wanted. If the clubs all agree to ensure all contracts.are fulfilled under the terms that they were signed then player managers would not have any leverage.

For the most part, that's usually in agreement with the player though and for more money. The only part they should look at fixing is some of the action that clubs take to force their hand. I.e what happened to robbie shouldn't happen.

In circumstances such as the one he may have been faced with at the time, over a relatively short period of time things can become quite unmanageable. But sure, it's easy to only look at a difficult situation from one side.

But unfortunately that will never be the case. The Raiders over the years have stood strong many times (over player behavoiur) only to have other clubs swoop in and pick up the players. Its the same with contracted players, all the clubs could agree but then players ( most of the time on advice of managers) pull out the old "compassionate grounds" or mental health cards etc. Its funny how those with these issues never seem to need to go to a weaker roster or for less money.

This is where the draft would be good. Take Tedesco for instance. WT offered him 1.2m yet the Roosters allegedly only offered him 900k. As long as WT matched his highest offer, he stays at WT or nominates for the draft where he would have been picked up by the teams from the bottom.
The best part of this besides player distribution, it forces REAL figures onto the salary cap instead of this 3rd party crap.

I think Scott was signed first and then it was made clear to Joey that he was going to be surplus to requirements.

He came from a real tough background to be honest. Was a teenage dad . So he just wants to set his family up for life . He has no loyalty to Aussie clubs . Not like an Aussie would . I don’t begrudge him. If I was playing the UK I’d be a club [This word has been automatically removed] as well.

As a club, if I had to sign a transfer fee to entice a player to my club (meaning he broke his last contract as well come to think of it), then I'd want to put a clause in to the contract that if the player leaves early then that transfer fee comes out of his pocket not the club.

And yeah good points about the teenage dad and the non-Aussie background, I don't begrudge him in those circumstances. Buyer beware though whatever club he goes to. Good player, but likely to leave for more cash.
