RoarFEED (iPhone/iPod App) Development Thread

How is everyone finding the latest version of RoarFEED?
How is the new forum interface? How does it handle at the games? I'm on Optus so connectivity is always shit regardless, but how is Telstra?

Also, can people do me a favour and "rate" the app in the App Store for me? 5 stars would be awesome, but honesty is just as good.
Rating the app will be beneficial for the forum too, because the more people that rate it the more prominence RoarFEED gets, hence leading to more people downloading it and more forum users! It's win-win-win for everyone

PS. the next minor update should be out soon which should fix the remaining minor bugs

Also, just out of interest, would anyone be interested in an ad-free version? If enough people are interested in it I'll see if I can get one released in time for the next update

Going well. I'm on Optus as well and I know what you mean.

Would love an add free version, the recent 'Babe' adds draws too much attention at work when I'm trying to be discrete reading the forum.

recently inappropriate ads have been appearing on roarFEED via the 3rd part agency.
The agreement with the agency was that these ads NOT appear. They have clearly disregarded this agreement and I've asked them to
1 - remove the ads immediately
2 - give an explanation

Yeah, I don't mind texas hold em ads or app adds, but stuff for porn/dating is going a bit too far. Could get a few blokes into trouble.

they should have been removed by now

turns out the one of the suppliers of ads has been fudging their ads given to the agency.

let me know if they still appear

Hey Kul,

Was thinking last night when I was browsing the forum on RoarFeed, Can we have a list of hot topics instead of the little bar at the bottom showing one at a time?

yeah I was thinking about that.

Over the off season i'm going to completely re-do it from the ground up, so something like that on the front page would be good.

any more suggestions would be good

Less prominence of the opposition team. Ie I hate the way the dragons emblem is so big on our tigers website. (Im talking the website)

Also I hate how the Hot topics have "New"… off course its new.

Was at the game last night & saw McKinnon selling doubles to the crowd. I wanted to know who would be listed at fullback so I tried to view the team in Roar Feed. I tried the better part of a dozen times over an hour or 2\. Got a failure message every time & an error message on one occasion. I had full reception & the 3G status bar icon was present. When I left the game I was about a kilometre away when I got the Push Notification that the team had been updated.

What carrier are you with mate?

This is almost certainly a network load issue with your carrier as the push notification worked a charm just after 6pm.
The fact that you were getting an error message says that RoarFEED couldn't get a connection to the internet as the team list page was functioning properly all night. Um, actually if the push notification arrived after the game as you were leaving then that says it was a reception issue as the APS (Apple Push Server) will hold back any push notifications until the phone can be found.

One trick with the iphone is to put it into "airplane" mode until the "carrier: Optus" option goes away (usually about 15 seconds), then turn airplane mode off. This resets your connection.

I'm with TPG which is the Optus network.

I turned my iPhone off & back on. Didn't help.

I was receiving SMS messages at the ground.

I should have seen if the internet was working in Safari to narrow the possible causes.

You say you got your notification after 6\. Where you at the ground? Which carrier?

Optus is notoriously overloaded so it's no surprise that this happened to you. I've had this same thing happen to me before with other apps/emails/etc, especially in places where the network gets overloaded like at football games.

You would have been receiving SMS fine as they use a different system. The best thing to do is fire up safari and see if a website loads. If it doesn't, then RoarFEED won't work as it needs a net connection, as do the PUSH notifications. Calls won't work either as the internet/telephone uses the same system, even though it says 3G and full reception.

I bit the bullet and jumped back to Telstra on their new plans. The new BYO plans match/beat what Optus has at the moment and their reception and reliability is SOOOOO much better.

Random fact: SMS was never intended to be a commercial product. It was simply just a small testing system that the engineers used to test new cell towers by sending text messages to other phones.

I use TPG cause they're cheapest & I'm not rich.

I haven't had any other problems in years.

Feature Request: I've heard other apps that have their own sound for Push Notifications. eg Words with Friends Free. Handy because you don't have to check your phone to see if you got an SMS or not & you know which app the notification is for. It would be good if the Roar Feed could have it's own sound too. Maybe a Tiger roaring? If you need a soundfile of a Tiger's roar I've got one.
