Sydney Roosters winger Peni Tagive has announced his retirement from rugby league at just 24 years of age.

Since making his NRL debut in 2008 for the Wests Tigers, Tagive's 18-game career has been punctuated by injury.

He played for St George Illawarra in 2011 and joined the Roosters ahead of the 2012 season.

The Fijian played five games for the Roosters before suffering a serious hamstring injury against Canterbury in round 12.

Tagive said he decided to retire in order to undertake fulltime university studies.

"I want to thank everyone at the club for their support through the year and for supporting the decision I have made for my future, as I look ahead to life after footy," Tagive said in a statement today.

"From the admin staff to the players and coaches, everyone's been really good to me and I'll still call the Roosters my family."

Tagive was a member of the Newtown Jets grand final winning side in the NSW Cup on Sunday.

Bit of a surprise but good luck to him. Hopefully he can stay around the game as a mentor to Fijians coming through game.

Looked like he was maybe going to be alright , when he 1st came on the scene .
But he probably hasn't got the confidence within himself, to retire at such an early age .

i remember how much guts he showed in his short time in FG for us… solid with his kick returns and was willing to put body on the line (flssh backs of an incident with pritchard when he was at panthers?).. its a shame he didnt get more of a go.

He spent the majority of his time at the Tigers injured, just like he did at the Dragons and Easts.

Yeah just unfortunately really injury prone. He is actually a very good player. Hopefully he still runs around for a district side and stays fit in case he changes his mind and stays fit for a year or two.

yeah i think we dropped him straight back to PL after the injury though, would have liked to see us show a bit more faith in him. oh well, hope he does well at uni.

It is a hard decision to decide that you aren't probably going to make it at the highest level and you need to start setting yourself up in a career or studies

In Tagive's case he has probably invested 7-8 years of his live trying to make it as a footballer (1/3 of his young live)

Good luck in the future young man

I can't think of another player who had as many serious injuries as Peni did at such a young age. I know he's torn his groin off the bone which effectively wiped him out for the season, I think he may have done his groin twice actually. He's had a knee reco, plus a shoulder reco, torn hamstring…

Hope he goes well at uni and ends up with a good career.
