Round 1 2017

Lock is basically a prop nowadays anyway.

Sue and Aloiai are difficult players to know where to play. I think they are both better up the middle but we really need an edge forward and they can play there.

If you consider the props and locks as middle forwards we are fine there. Maybe play ET on the right edge.

Sorry I disagree Steve, you need your lock to have a more rounded game than a prop, defending in the middles is where the comparison stops.

It doesn't have to be, that's just how some teams choose to play it because it suits their roster. With interchanges trending down and the preference for left/right halves we might see a resurgence in ball playing locks acting as link men.

I'd leave ET at lock and move Sue to an edge to bring Felise into the prop rotation myself (assuming ET stays).

Liddle will need a back up hooker, he isn't ready for 80 minutes of first grade yet.

I think we have to figure out the pack and the bench. We are really strong though up the middle. Woods is one of the top props in the game and we won't lose much if anything when Ava and Felise come on. Different styles of players but it's a big strength of ours. I like Sue and Aloiai at lock as well. I think that is where they are best suited.

I also agree that Liddle will need a back-up hooker and that really sucks because I'd rather play 4 forwards off the bench. Unfortunately I think Ballin will need to play starting hooker with Liddle off the bench and probably Marsters misses out.

That is a good team though.

Agree. We will likely start Ballin with Liddle off the bench I suppose. Marsters is the odd one out in my team. I have a feeling Lawrence will be left behind by Aloai or Masters this year and fill a bench spot by mid season.

If that's the case, why do we get easily rolled in the middle by any large pack?

The first point is that this statement isn't true. We handled the Cowboys and Warriors just fine last season. They have big packs.

We do get rolled sometimes but I think that was primarily against Canberra and maybe Penrith. I think we were rolled out wide just as much as up the middle. One area we lack is a prop/lock forward that has some impact. Players like Taupau and Shannon Boyd can get a team rolling up the middle and then it's hard to stop.

Still we just have to work with what we have which is an awesome combination of middle forwards. I think playing ET on the right edge may help as well. Hopefully that way he could play 80 minutes as he'd have less involvement and we can use all our middle forwards to belt it up hopefully relatively fresh throughout the game.

If ET did go to the right side I think he could form a good combo with Idris at right centre.
In defence I think ET and Idris would really complement each other.
Then I'd have Sue at 13.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about - You ramble on and on and on….

If we're as strong up the middle as you say - Why did we rank 15th for metres made this season.
And in the top 5 for long range tries.

Please stop talking your ill thought out garbage.... PLEASE!!
- You're giving me cancer....

We're not strong enough in the middle for my liking, nor are we physical enough. We have some capable players, but none of which are intimidating to an opposition and have the ability to really seat someone on their backside in D.

The team is not far of but needs at least 2 hard headed forwards that will hurt in defence,IMO it all boils down to defence or the lack of it when it applies to the Tigers , the points do come but defensively are a joke .
All stops have to be pulled out by the club to sign a couple of knuckle heads …they do not have to be world beaters just the type opposition players do not want to ran at .

Based on our spine we are committed to we need aggressive 2nd rowers with big motors to help protect our playmakers. We have lacked this type of player for years.
Idris at centre will help on one side to strengthen things but even he needs help.

If that's the case, why do we get easily rolled in the middle by **any** large pack?

The fact is that our forwards were dominant against Souths (twice), Broncos, Cowboys, Warriors and even Storm. Arguably Souths, Cowboys and Warriors have big intimidating forwards, so it is not true that we cannot play against **any** big pack.

In meters run, Woods is dominating NRL prop for the last 2 years.

Seumanufagai shall play more minutes, and can average 130 m per game.

Hopefully with Falise and Tatola (186/118), Paseka (197/120), Sokobalava (184/114)
we will have better depth.
Also, our 2nd rowers will be stronger with addition of Marsters (187/110), Giles (187/107), McCormack (197/104) etc.

Props:
Starting: Woods, Seumanufagai
Bench T Grant, Falise, Tatola/Paseka

2nd row
Starting Lawrence, Sue
Bench Aloiai

Lock Taylor/Griffin

Virtually every NRL Team 'collapse' our middle with ease in most games… We need to be tougher and display more guile to reduce this effect.

I'm not sure we can do this without changing the stock in our middle and bench rotation?

I look at all the teams that have been successful over the past few years, they all have really hard working, very experienced forward pack. We have probably a front row rotation that is good enough but we struggle big time in the back row. Sharks,Storm and the like have forwards who turn up every week and very rarely produce a bad game. With us its a mixed bag of lollies most weeks.

On a positive note, they are getting better and players like Sue are getting more consistent so maybe we just might see a win over a team like the Chooks or the Raiders next year, but gee they are going to have to work their butts off in the off season

Been saying it for ages ..we lose the middle far to often especially defending in our own half….which then in turn adds enormous pressure on our already weak edges where most of the points are scored..thankfully people like you and Batboy see it for what it is rather than what the clueless continue to ignore....

It improved when Taylor came on board with his ability to slow the ruck ..an underestimated part of his game but the bloke can't do it alone..

Felise has also shown that ability throughout the 20's and State Cup..would be on my bench from Round 1..
