Round 1 Thoughts

Disappointing result which was compounded by some silly errors/poor discipline and really no luck falling our way. Everything seemed to go with Canberra. However, since 2015 we have won our 1st game of the season and it has never served us well. In both 2005 and 2011 we lost our first game and made finals and we all know how 05 finished up! I still remember going down to the Eels in 05 with a score of 28 to 12 and thinking it was more of the same from the Tigers!
Plenty of time to turn it around!

Defence and discipline lost us the game.

Our captain missed some important tackles today, even in the trial there were a couple of shirt grabs.

Garners defence and discipline was just non existent as he should be next week.

I thought our backs defended well, they held the line and didn’t come rushing out.

Some of those set restarts and penalties were stupid.

I’m not sure how we control BJ maybe it was because the game was against the raiders?

Mbye only looked dangerous once.

Brooks had some good kicks and some shockers but I thought generally he played well. I thought he was robbed an opportunity toward the end there with forward pass call.

Not the end of the world first game for a newish side against a team many predict may win the gf this year.

I’ll keep my razor in the bathroom draw for now.

Madden should of asked for a release instead of re-signing with the club for another year hes never gonna get a go in 1st grade

Considering he got hooked in NSW Cup yesterday he's nowhere near ready for FG

People still going on about how good we'll be without Benji? Clearly missed his organisation and attacking ability. Brooks was lost. I get the decision not to re-sign him but the negativity around Benji on here was over the top.

I had low expectations for the season but the forwards were better than I expected and the backs were a lot worse, so I'm not sure where we are.

I suggest Mbye or Talau at lock next week. I like Twal but he looks slow and cumbersome in that role when locks seem to be getting speedier and more skilfull. Not a criticism, think he'd be solid off the bench as a prop but I don't like him at lock.

Only other suggestion is that Joey Leuilua needs to play a lot smarter or I would drop him. He was horrible today.

On the other hand, Roberts surprised by looking good defensively.

Brooks needs to get better at running this team or we are stuffed, our sets were directionless rubbish.

I disagree with a lot of what you said, but an interesting point about the players that you mention as locks.

A few coaches this weekend made changes they used a smaller more nimble player (such as Benji) in place of a middle forward towards the end of the 1st half. A smart move as it allowed them to attack tired opponents.

I thought our use of the bench was very ordinary today. It almost seemed choreographed and not based on what was happening. Little was being pummeled in the middle and would have been much better if given a 15 minute breather at some stage.

Reckon that the Tamou HIA when nearing the end of his stint and having to return in 15 minutes mixed it up a bit, but nothing new as often a bit bemused with our rotation even without interruptions.

Packer wasnt used much. Not that it worried me but using a bench prop like that is surprising.

Maguires selection and use of the bench last year was questionable too. I’m not sure what he was trying to achieve yesterday but it didn’t work.

Disappointing attack...non existing halves...when the other team decides to play, we crumble...same comments in forum..Let's face it, I could date this 5 years ago and it would still be relevant and current.
I am hoping yesterdays' game isn't a sign of things to come.

Yep. I try to remind myself its only round 1. But its hard to be filled with much optimism. Can someone please send the message to Brooks, Mbye or whoever is putting a kick through, to do on the 5th and not the 4th. You kick on the 4th when you know how to kick 40/20s, know its going to add pressure or if your outside backs know its on. Our kicks on the 4th do nothing exept give the opposition better field position. Also, Liddle, stay packed in the scrum and don't play first reciever, you ran sideways, looked for a pass, no one had any bloody idea what you were doing and you submitted in the tackle. I saw it twice and if that's our go to play this year than we are screwed.

I think the game went the way most people expected, except hopeful WTs fans. They are premiership contenders. We were never going to beat them unless we played to the best of our ability which we probably did in the first half and then it all went to crap in the second. We had enough good field position to win but our attack was either poor or their defence was outstanding - probably a bit of both.

Firstly, Raiders are a top 4 side and WT are no way up to that class. Throw in Storm, Penrith, Easts and Souths.

First half WT competed but then the crap set in when the second half began. Garner, BJ and Packer are not NRL full stop. I would like to see
Talou at centre, AD 5/8, T Simpkins second row, J Simpkin on bench as
Liddle can't play 80 mins. Packer given one more week until Musgrove returns.

We will be no match for Easts next week. Teams with way different abilities.

Thought the pack besides Garner were good. Laurie and Jet were also good and will get better.

This team still has a lot of room for improvement. We have always done well in the first few rounds only to fade later on. A bit of tweaking in some positions/combinations, along with more time playing together, I see us improving drastically over the next few weeks. Apart from yesterday’s result against a premiership favourite at their fortress of a home ground, I am excited at the potential of this tigers team.

Yeah it was strange. We basically ran with a 2 man bench yesterday until 20 mins to go whereby at that stage we had made 100 more tackles. No wonder they were gassed.

How refreshing to see a fullback attack the ball and catch it on the full immediately charging back up field taking metres back.

Not all doom and gloom, I thought. First half was pretty good and I thought that our forwards held up pretty well against one of the better packs in the competition.

Brooks' kicking game in general play was very poor. It put us under a lot of pressure. On the positive side though, we know he can be better than that. He actually has a good kicking game when he puts it all together. I'm prepared to give him the benefit of an "off day". Hope there aren't too many more of them.

Liddle can not play 80mins and be a effective attacking player. We need to use Liddle and Simkins in tandem.
That will not happen because they need to find a home for Moses M.
Backs need to get some depth and shape in there attack and as I said months ago our kicking game is probably the worst in the comp. Hopefully Doughie will help improve than.

Sutton showed again what a poor ref he is but can’t be blamed for our performance.

Anyway, yesterday was not great but not a disaster and young Laurie was a shinning light

What are people’s thoughts on switching James Robert’s and Joey Leilua.

Then move Robert’s out to the wing and bring Tommy Talau into the centre’s, AJ out of the top 17?

Agree Roberts to wing Tommy talau to centres AJ out
Run with Liddle and Simpkin off the bench or make a play for B Smith

Roberts to wing. Yeah, nah.

Against one of the top teams in the comp at home in damp weather i thought it was a good effort. They got a couple of lucky tries with the bounce off the leg, another try off a kick, a ling range try from a stupid kepoa pass which could easily have been a try down our end.

Our forwards were up to the task against probably the best pack in the comp.

Our backs were rusty but with Laurie in his 3rd game of NRL, Kepoa in his 6th, the Jet hardly playing for 18 months and Joey not having played a trial and Mbye filling in a 5/8 after spending all off season trialling st fullback. I think we showed potential.

Obviously Douehi comes in next week.

Liddle was solid in his first 80 min game in nrl in a few years but he needs to get better in defence while Brooks was rocks and diamonds.

Simpkin was great in nsw cup i heard setting up 2 tries and scoring 1 himself - im expecting him to finish the year as starting hooker and think Garner is our real week spot and we should be looking for another backrower.

Our bench was ok. Mikaeles defence is still a worry but though Stefano was good, Packer played really well in a short stint and Talau impressed when he was on although im not sure what his best spot is.

I thought Packer was our best player yesterday. Didn’t drop the ball. Didn’t miss a tackle. Didn’t make a run. Didn’t get his jumper dirty. The laundry staff must love him. All adds up to the perfect game

As i said before the game, our best attacking players were not picked. Our forwards were good ,and Laurie as well, but to leave out Simkin, and Madden was stupid. The players let it be known who they preferred but Madge has a love affair with Mbye. Joey L straight into CC should be classed as permanent HIA.

What do you mean by "the players let it be known who they preferred"?

Good post, but your comment on Liddell seems a bit off, he is stated to have done a 50 tackle count?
