Round 1 Thoughts

I turned it off after brooksy's 200th midfield bomb. He's not a half-back. Definately talented, he needs to go to 6 and we need to buy a half.

Against one of the top teams in the comp at home in damp weather i thought it was a good effort. They got a couple of lucky tries with the bounce off the leg, another try off a kick, a ling range try from a stupid kepoa pass which could easily have been a try down our end.

Our forwards were up to the task against probably the best pack in the comp.

Our backs were rusty but with Laurie in his 3rd game of NRL, Kepoa in his 6th, the Jet hardly playing for 18 months and Joey not having played a trial and Mbye filling in a 5/8 after spending all off season trialling st fullback. I think we showed potential.

Obviously Douehi comes in next week.

**Liddle was solid in his first 80 min game in nrl in a few years but he needs to get better in defence while Brooks was rocks and diamonds.**

Simpkin was great in nsw cup i heard setting up 2 tries and scoring 1 himself - im expecting him to finish the year as starting hooker and think Garner is our real week spot and we should be looking for another backrower.

Our bench was ok. Mikaeles defence is still a worry but though Stefano was good, Packer played really well in a short stint and Talau impressed when he was on although im not sure what his best spot is.

Good post, but your comment on Liddell seems a bit off, he is stated to have done a 50 tackle count?

Probably for the try they scored on the back of Laurie's poor moment from the match when he needed to just put a hand on the grounded player to affect a tackle on who Liddle pulled down and then fell off his legs. However, Daine watched on as the player then got up and they scored.

I’m the odd one out here, because I thought it was a great first up hit out for our boys. We have some talent in the right places now, just need to have more shape and structure in attack, at times there, they looked more like the under 10s with wide forwards getting in the way.
We had some real strike in our outside backs that we didn’t use.
I’m more happy with our forward pack, they were more than a match for the Raiders. Let’s remember, many of these guys had their first game in our colours.

I don’t understand why every other team that’s had bad runs in the past (Knights, Eels, Panthers) can just revamp their team and become some of the better teams in the comp, yet we go through player after player, combination after combination and it always turns to crap.

I’m sick of signing average players and pretending like they’ll turn us into a premiership threat when 1 in every 5 of them pans out.

Knights got Klemmer, Frizel, Ponga, Pearce and they become a strong team. We sign a bunch of “young guns” that don’t pan out or leave and mid tier players who do the same.

Same story every year

TPAs...and our club was run on 10c, and poorly at that, for about 19 years. I'm surprised we survived. It's turning around, but that's a big deficit hence why it's taking time and other clubs get the players we don't at this stage.

We don’t get the players because for the last ten years we keep serving up the same garbage. And apart from Mbye and Packer Maguire has signed or resigned them his team . No more excuses for coach or club

Hmmm not entirely... Titans were crap for a while as were Warriors and Newcastle were abysmal, didn't stop them from getting players. Which leads to another point: they're one team towns whereas we are in a hugely competitive market. Just another thing that works against us.

Shame that the Packer and Mbye contracts are two of our three biggest.

That is a crazy big and talented Raiders team. We aren't in their class.

But we weren't that bad. We won't play teams that huge every week and we won't be as fatigued as a result.

I take a lot of heart in the recruitment. Our best and brightest today were all recruited on Maguire's watch.

NO , Simkin was Madge, the rest were Hartigan. The plodders were Madge.

Semantics. My point was that almost all of our worst-performing players today were signed under Cleary.

Genuinely curious to know why you've gone in so hard to bat for Hartigan here? You're not a fan of Maguire's coaching of the team?

I was a Madge fan, but now i have doubts . Not all of the bad signings were Cleary, and i understand we were under pressure with a poor roster and salary cap but his friendship with players i think affected his thinking. Hartigan is the reason for the quality in this squad i think(Debatable?)
Some of the selections last year and this, are disturbing, some players were poor to be honest, Maybe a good coach ,but not a great selector of talent.

Yeah I see where you're coming from regarding Hartigan and I think you're right in his involvement. It's one of the reasons I think Ivan left, because he similarly couldn't ID talent and knew it and we're seeing similar issues at Manly.

Of course, if the team starts winning is it Maguire's team then? ?

Roberts tried hard and was one of the few with a bit of spark.
Tamou was strong when on the field and we fell away once he left the field.
We’re going to struggle to win without a hooker or halves.

I'm sure we will struggle if we are only going to play with 14 men. Lol

I'll sum it up in two words "Money" and "Cleary"

I wanna be positive but its hard when there's been plenty of games in the last few years where the club stuck it out with a quality opponent only to get pumped after letting in a try just before half time and then letting in 4 more in the second.

Add to that, no real attacking structure. Players doing 1% plays, Jumper grabbing defence. Zero kicking game from the halves etc.. Kicking out on the full from the restart is a real kick in the nuts.

Its just all things we have seen for years and nothing seems to change. Add players, remove players, same result. Next week is gunna be brutal.

I’m still unfamiliar with what role Talau played yesterday? He seemed to roam around the field like he was playing under 8s with no actual game plan. Our forwards were rolling up the ad line then we just shot our selves in the foot with liddles slow service, discipline and errors. I actually thought it was prime to bring someone like Simpkin on.

Talau either starts, or isn’t in the team at all IMO. And with the way some of our backs played, I’m sure it won’t be too long

Rubbish - you are assuming....YOU DO NOT KNOW THAT!

I would suggest it is a combination of both. That's my opinion anyway.

It actually looked like Madge was gauging whether Talau might be an option in the forwards next week - had him in the second row for a little while there.

Yeah, think it was Tapine.

Overall I thought the forward pack (excluding Garner) performed well and they'll only get better when Blore and Musgrove return. Was particularly impressed with Joe O and Luc.

Laurie was excellent but the rest of the spine were pretty awful (Mbye probably the least worst). AD will make a big difference but I don't think he'll be enough to fix the mess.

Madge's use of the bench was bizarre.

It was clear yesterday we had no game plan.
1 run summed up the day and that was when JTJ got the ball ran across the full field and had no one willing to take a hitup. No half wanted the ball with Mbye, Brooks and Laurie camped on the left.

In the 1st half we could see defense was worked on but geez if we turn the ball over softly and have nothing in attack we will get toweled up every game.

AD hopefully will change that as he is a right edge player, Brooks is a left edge so maybe we will get a spread but we looked terrible with the ball in hand.

I'd like to see more offloads in the forwards and second phase play which brings Brooks, Laurie and Liddle into the game. We looked predictable yesterday without the second phase.
