Bula's shown flashes of brilliance and is obviously an immense talent but there's still going to be work for him to do to become a top fullback, especially in the ball-playing department and when to inject himself into attacking zones. Our halves are pretty poor - Brooks is Brooks and Wakeham is a guy who's a min wager who's not really a first grader or a fringe one at best.
We however have an exceptional pack and backs who are specialists at making metres. Our game is going to be grinding footy whether we like it or not until we improve our halves and Bula has another season under his belt. I was pretty sceptical about our coaching staff but I've got a lot more confidence in them over the last few weeks because I think they're starting to realise that the issue is our halves and if we can build a system that is able to dominate field position, the final piece of the puzzle will be inserting those halves who can create points. It's also why they're after veterans rather than young guys for the halves - proven performers who we know can create points will put this team in the top 8.
Consistently winning the field position battle is a proven formula for success. Penrith have barely lost in the past few years by suffocating teams. Plus it's something which is consistent from game to game. Relying on star playmakers always leaves you vulnerable when they have a shocker - we should know this well - Benji and Farah were awesome in their primes but we didn't have long-term success because Benji was never the most consistent and our forwards rarely won the battle up the middle with the exception of 2010 and 11. Of course we won games we had no right winning because of them, but from game to game and season to season, you'll find the team that wins the field position will win more games and have more successful seasons.
