The article might be fake but Marshall’s comments aren’t. Pretty weak. This guy used the club as a door mat, then still has to get his digs in this year when we release another player. And Benji with the “it’s cool bro” response. That reaction annoys more than Matterson’s supposed comment. Even if it doesn’t bother you, you need to at least show that it upsets you. No wonder clubs walk over us. We show no outward pride in the jersey.

Benji is a professional. Talking badly about a former player to the media would reflect poorly on him and the club. I’m sure behind closed doors they’re filthy but no need to make any comments to the media. Let’s see how they turn up on Thursday instead of worrying about what they say in interviews

I disagree and it’s probably why we have looked mediocre for so long

The media basically crap on our club once again after a positive win and Marshall plays friendly with the opposition and praises the turncoat who left our club after giving him a wonderful opportunity

Just compare Farahs stance on the situation compared to Marshall, chalk and cheese

Personally I would be incredibly embarrassed if our players publicly had a go at people who left the club. It’s a weak club, losers mentality in my eyes. Go show it out on the field instead of just talking about it otherwise you’ll look like an idiot

Walk the walk instead of talking the talk. We don’t need every other club laughing at us. Benji is too smart to buy into the media BS

As the old saying usually goes, nice guys finish last

Every club already does laugh at us because we’re too nice, and also have the longest finals drought of any club. Hopefully the past month has instilled some ruthlessness about our team with players being dropped etc, I have faith Madge can turn things around

Don’t have to be nice on the field though. Whack him and win the game that’s how you get back at him and shut everyone up. No point talking big in interviews if you can’t back it up

Intentional misspelling or Parramatta educated?

After this weekend he will be known as

Let it go. Win, Lose or Draw Parra fans and players will still be Parra fans and players and that's a fate none of us can understand.

The gloves have come off ahead of Thursday night's western derby, with Parramatta's Ryan Matterson denying he ditched the Wests Tigers just one year into a three-year deal because he believed they could not win the competition.

As the Tigers prepare to face the Eels for the first time since Matterson's defection in the off-season, the second-rower was upset when he read a story in The Sun-Herald in which it was reported he'd signed off from the club last season by telling them: ''You’ll never win a grand final - I want out.''

The Parramatta Eels need more mental toughness to have any chance of winning this year's NRL, Phil Gould says.

The Eels took the step of releasing a statement on Sunday taking issue with the report. "Parramatta and Ryan categorically deny that these comments were made and are disappointed that they were raised behind the veil of an anonymous source and without an opportunity for us to respond,'' the Eels said.

"Ryan has continually maintained that the reasons behind his departure will remain confidential and this will continue.''

But Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe responded angrily to the Eels on Sunday afternoon, maintaining numerous people at the club were aware of Matterson's comment, as reported by the Herald.

Pascoe also made it clear the Tigers were still irked by the manner of Matterson's departure from the Tigers.

"We’re really proud of the direction this club is taking and we will always pay homage and respect to the players who have worn the Wests' Tigers jersey in the past and made it the brand it is today," Pascoe said. "If people want to act disrespectfully and walk out on their contracts and teammates early, that’s their choice.

"Ryan walked out early and while we’ve never been entirely sure why he did what he did, we also haven’t given him or what he did to us much thought since.''

Contacted to respond to Pascoe's comments, the Eels declined to comment.

Thursday night's clash at Bankwest Stadium will have plenty of extra feeling now Matterson's extraordinary exit has made headlines again. The Tigers also expect another one of their former players who now wears the blue and gold, Mitch Moses, to return from a calf injury.

Matterson was sorely missed for the Eels as they went down to Manly on Saturday night, while the Tigers are desperate to build on their 48-0 victory over the busted-up Broncos.

If people want to act disrespectfully and walk out on their contracts and teammates early, that’s their choice.

Parramatta belted the Tigers during an Easter Monday mauling last year, while they also ruined Benji Marshall's 300th later in the season.

Matterson first addressed his Tigers' exit at the start of the year when he said: "I did give my all in 2019 in every single game, and to all the fans out there I'm sorry with how it happened. I wish them all the best."

He always maintained his departure had nothing to do with money nor a run-in with coach Michael Maguire.

Former Tigers favourite Robbie Farah made his thoughts on the situation known when he told an NRL.com podcast last year: "I love Matto, he’s a great guy. [But] the way it has been handled, it’s been quite poor from him and his management. He’s probably worth more than he is on. But you signed a contract. Honour your contract."

Matterson refused to attend an end-of-season bowls days with the players last year and then took a pot shot at the Tigers last month on social media for allowing Corey Thompson to join the Gold Coast Titans.

"Players’ player last year and they didn’t want to use you this year," wrote Matterson, followed by the raised eyebrows emoji.

Marshall had no desire to be drawn into a slanging match, saying after the Broncos blowout: "Matto is a great player, he's still a good mate of mine, but [Thursday] has got nothing to do with Matto. We need the two points again.

"If you work hard at training you get results and, honestly, he's one of the hardest workers I've seen at training. I can understand why he's added so much to them. And he's a leader.

"In an ideal world you always want it to be rosy and good. But he did what he felt was best for him, and that's OK. You can't bag anyone for doing that. He's going well. Good luck to him."

Don’t have to talk big in interviews but wish players weren’t so cliche. You could pop the question up on the tv screen these days and predict what they’re going to say 9 times out of 10

Everyone’s media trained for these interviews now. Besides Pascoe apparently

Well and Farah too. That’s the kind of response I’d hope Marshall would come up with, sick of the club getting walked all over

Nah. I'm actually happy Pascoe said something. It wasn't rude or offensive and I'm sick of everyone kissing each others asses. We have been screwed over a few times now by certain individuals and I'm glad Pascoe is pissed. He has heart and is sticking up for the club, as long as he doesn't sink too low.

100%. Time for Tigers to push back. I’d say there’s some anger about the non release if Stefano as well

He’ll make the club look very stupid if we lose. Time to move on Justin! Gotta be professional

Can you imagine the Roosters or Storm giving this sort of thing oxygen?
