Semi Finals Draw - Mcyntire System - Super Thread

Another reason why the current system sucks:

Brisbane (3rd) won their first game but must beat the Dragons (5th) to progress
Tigers (4th) won their first game but must beat the Warriors (6th) to progress

So in other words, the higher placed Brisbane must beat a higher placed team, while the lower placed Tigers only have to beat the lowly Warriors.

That is just to stop the same teams from playing each other again though isn't it? Otherwise the Broncos and Tigers would play the same teams again…

That's right. They have a choice between fairness and stupidity and just plain outright stupidity.

You miss the point CB

What would have been fairer is the Broncos getting a reward for finishing higher than the Tigers, the reward being playing a lower placed side (comparatively) to get to the next round.

Instead the Broncos must beat a higher placed side (comparatively) than the Tigers.

The fact that the Broncos have already played the Warriors brings us back to the way Week 1 is setup.

the whole system is silly.

I don't miss the point Kul, I know what you're getting at and I agree that the system is unfair in a number of ways. Was just pointing out that the system would be even more stupid (if it could possibly be,) if the same two teams could possibly tee off against each other again in the second week.

You won't get any arguments from me that it needs to be changed mate.

k, i see what you are getting at.

Yes, that would be completely stupid.

The overwhelming majority of fans I have spoken with (not just Tigers fans,) have all indicated they can't stand the McIntyre system and would love to adopt the AFL system as it rewards the top four teams.

But hey, we're just the mugs who spend an rude amount of cash on merchandise, tickets, memberships & paraphernalia and make the game what it is, what would we know?

Another thing, this stupid "Friday or Saturday" business… like seriously! It's so hard to organise anything this month because you don't know when your team is playing

on a more personal note - two friday night games = two games I can't get to.

Sad Panda Face.

In terms of giving the bottom 4 teams a chance to make the final, the McIntyre System has provided some of these teams with a GF spot in the last few years -

2011 - Manly (2) V Warriors (6)
2010 - St George (1) V Roosters (6)
2009 - Melbourne (4) V Parramatta (8)
2008 & 2007 - Melbourne and Manly were both 1 & 2

Firstly the Friday and Saturday finals are a result of the league doing a deal with the broadcaster channel nine for moving the Grand Final game to 5.30pm on Sunday night.

As for the make up of the final series, I think the first week of the McIntyre is purely a money spinner for the broadcaster. I favor a final six mainly because no team below 1 and 2 should be getting a second byte of the cherry. I would abandon the first week of finals and just have the top 2 rewarded with a week off and then 3rd v 6th and 4th v 5th with the losers bowing out and the winners go on the play the top 2\. The week that is freed up can make up another round of the normal season to make the competition fairer.

Under the McIntyre system the grand finals have been

1999: 3 v 6
2000: 1 v 2
2001: 1 v 3
2002: 1 v 4
2003: 1 v 2
2004: 1 v 2
2005: 4 v 5
2006: 1 v 3
2007: 1 v 2
2008: 1 v 2
2009: 4 v 8
2010: 1 v 6
2011: 2 v 6

How many times each position has made it
1- 9/13
2- 6/13
3- 3/13
4- 3/13
5- 1/13
6- 3/13
7- 0/13
8- 1/13

Apart from 6th who have made it a lot, the higher ranked teams do better than the lower ones. Of the 4 minor premiers not to make it, only 1 has failed to make the prelims (St George 09), the other 3 lost in the prelims (Sharks 99, Eels 05 and Storm 11). No team who eliminated the minor premiers before the grand final has won it though.
