Seven Questions: ...

Q. Which young player is poised for a breakout season in 2017?

Brock Corfe, Media Manager

Jacob Liddle stands out as the clear choice for me. While this pick may not come as a surprise, it’s hard to go past the exciting young hooker who looks destined for a big year. Despite suffering a shoulder injury during the last few weeks of pre-season, expect the Wyong junior to play a big role this season at hooker.

Dan Talintyre, Digital & Social Media

There’s lots of hype around him, and lots of questions still to be asked, but young Moses Suli has shown plenty of promise through the pre-season to suggest that Wests Tigers have an incredibly sound prospect on their hands. Signed until the end of 2020, Suli looked a little nervous in the Auckland Nines tournament, but quickly found his feet in both trial matches — playing the best part of 60 minutes against the Cowboys in a very solid performance. How much he’ll be called on by Coach Jason Taylor throughout the season still remains to be seen, but if he can snag the left wing spot at some point, or is called up in the backs due to injury or suspension, the talented teenager could quickly make himself known in the NRL.

John Skandalis, Wests Tigers Life Member

Jacob Liddle showed everything last year to suggest that he’s ready for the NRL and he’ll only be better for a full pre-season with the team getting ready for it. He’s only so young but he’s just a really level-headed kid who always seem to have a lot of time on the ball, and I think he’s only going to get better every week that he plays in the NRL.

Dene Halatau, Wests Tigers Life Member

Jacob Liddle. He had a good taste of it last year and looked very comfortable in first-grade even back then. He had a little hiccup in the pre-season, but he’s really filled out and looks comfortable in the top grade. I think he’s in for a really strong year and will definitely be a player we hear more of in the years to come.

WHICH PLAYER WILL BE THE MOST IMPROVED IN 2017?

Brock Corfe, Media Manager

For me, it has to be Elijah Taylor. While ET certainly didn’t disappoint anyone in 2016, expect the former Panther to go to another level this year with a full pre-season at Wests Tigers under his belt. His combination with halves Mitch Moses and Luke Brooks as a ball-playing lock forward will be key to the Club’s hopes of returning to finals football in 2017.

Dan Talintyre, Digital & Social Media

Last season, David Nofoaluma went from being a good winger to a great winger, scoring a team-high 14 tries and making his international debut at the end of the year as well. He’s an excellent finisher and one of the strongest runners in the competition coming out of his own end — he led the entire NRL in tackle breaks last season — and I’m looking for him to continue that progression again in 2017\. Playing on a dangerous right edge with Mitchell Moses, expect Nofa to find the line time and time again this year and establish himself as one of the top wingers in the game by season’s end. I’d even go as far to say that if the Blues are looking for a winger to replace the injured Josh Mansour this year, they’d do much worse than to look to City representative Nofoaluma.

John Skandalis, Wests Tigers Life Member

I reckon Josh Aloiai is really going to improve again this year. Obviously he had an incredible year last year but I think he’s going to be even better again this year and really build on what he’s already done. Especially watching him in the trials, he seems to have continued his 2016 form so I think he’ll be one of our biggest improvers.

Q. Which player will be most crucial to the team in 2017?

Brock Corfe, Media Manager

James Tedesco. The electric fullback looks set for another big season after an impressive 60-minute stint in the Club’s trial match against North Queensland two weeks ago. A stellar past two seasons for Wests Tigers from the Camden Rams junior has firmly cemented him (in my view) as the most crucial player for the side.

Dan Talintyre, Digital & Social Media

He might only have been at the club for half a season, but in those 15 games, Elikah Taylor showed just how important he is to Wests Tigers in both attack and defence — sparking the team on a run that almost saw them finish inside the top eight. ET’s playmaking skills at first receiver allowed Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks much more freedom in attack, while his 45-plus tackles per game made Wests Tigers a much stronger prospect in defence. A full pre-season with the team and a well-deserved inclusion in the Club’s leadership group this year will only further see ET establish himself as one of the best ball-playing forwards in the entire competition.

John Skandalis, Wests Tigers Life Member

There’s a few key people here, but for me, it all starts with Woodsy. I think the way that he makes the team gel and brings everyone together is crucial for the team, and it’s perhaps something that goes unnoticed a lot. In terms of his leadership, I think he’s really good at keeping an eye on the guys and how everyone is travelling, and he does a great job of backing up what he says with his own performances on the field as well.

Dene Halatau, Wests Tigers Life Member

I’d probably want to put both our halves in together on that. Both Mitch and Luke produced some really good footy at different points throughout the year last year, and if they can get that right together, they’ll guide the team around the park really well and will be the difference in a lot of close games throughout the year.

Q. What's the one home game you don't want to miss in 2017?

Brock Corfe, Media Manager

Round 2 vs. Penrith. Wests Tigers’ first home game of the 2017 season is an absolute cracker! Sunday afternoon footy at Campbelltown Sports Stadium against Western Sydney rivals, the Penrith Panthers, is an outstanding way to begin the season and one that Wests Tigers Members and fans will not want to miss.

Dan Talintyre, Digital & Social Media

I’m looking at Round 4 against Melbourne with eager anticipation as the first Leichhardt Oval game of 2016\. Last year, it was the Melburnians who won in a Golden Point thriller, despite Wests Tigers missing some big names, so expect the home side to come out firing in what should be a cracking Sunday afternoon of football.

John Skandalis, Wests Tigers Life Member

None of them! But if I had to pick one, there could be something really special about the Cowboys late in the season at Campbelltown Sports Stadium (Round 25). By that time of the year, we’re going to be there and abouts for the semi-finals and we’ll have something to play for — either pushing for the top four or for the top eight — and the Cowboys will be too. The team always seem to play well when we meet the Cowboys and we saw last year how much of an impact the crowd at Campbelltown had so that could be a great game!

Dene Halatau, Wests Tigers Life Member

I guess it’s one that has a special spot for me, but Round 26 at Leichhardt Oval is going to be a big one. Just like last year, the players will know whether they’re playing finals footy or not and I know I’ll remember that atmosphere — even if the game didn’t go according to plan — for a long time. We’ve had some good games against the Warriors in recent years too, so it should be a good contest on the field.

Q. Which underrated Wests Tigers player is in for the biggest year in 2017?

Brock Corfe, Media Manager

Ava Seumanufagai doesn’t often get the wraps he deserves but has been a key member of the side over the past few years. Closing in on 100 NRL games, the hard-working prop forward will step up again this year and provides a quality prop rotation with Aaron Woods and Tim Grant. Seumanufagai will play a key role, particularly during the Origin period when Woods departs for New South Wales duties.

Dan Talintyre, Digital & Social Media

There’s some recognition for Josh Aloiai after a breakout rookie season saw him feature in every game throughout the year, but I think the former Junior Kiwi will further establish himself as a key player in 2017\. Aloiai’s ability to play good minutes at either prop, lock or on the edge gives him great versatility coming off the interchange bench or starting, and he could be one player to really step up when Aaron Woods is away on State of Origin commitments.

John Skandalis, Wests Tigers Life Member

He’s obviously pretty key to the team, but for me, Elijah Taylor still doesn’t get the raps that he should for the way he helps the team in both attack and defence. Having the full pre-season here and not trying to settle moving halfway through the year from Penrith I think will really help him as well and we’ll see ET go to another level again this year which could see him back in that Kiwis squad for the World Cup.

Dene Halatau, Wests Tigers Life Member

I reckon Ava Seumanufagai is one to watch for. He’s been really consistent over the last few years and I think he’ll get the chance this year to play some bigger minutes when Woodsy is away on State of Origin duties and the like. He always gives his all and I thought had a huge impact last year whenever he came off the bench, so he’s definitely a player to keep an eye out for me.
