The majority of the hyped up juniors are currently in the Wests Magpies system.we talk u our juniors so much, but are they as good as the club thinks they are..the eels have given our boys a bit of a thrashing today, draw against the storm and win over sea eagles..im thinking maybe a few of the boys over in NZ for the game tomorrow. I heard the Wests SG Ball team were very strong this year, ho e this is why we havent had a great start.
Well it was Balmain playing Parra today not Wests. The Wests team has had most of its star players taken over to NZ and last week they were also missing TDS and some others hence 1 win and a draw.we talk u our juniors so much, but are they as good as the club thinks they are..the eels have given our boys a bit of a thrashing today, draw against the storm and win over sea eagles..im thinking maybe a few of the boys over in NZ for the game tomorrow. You have to remember, not only are our juniors spread across two clubs at Harold Matts and SG Ball, but the best of the Ball players are currently in our Summer Squad, with many earmarked for more focus on Flegg, Cup and even NRL progression.we talk u our juniors so much, but are they as good as the club thinks they are..the eels have given our boys a bit of a thrashing today, draw against the storm and win over sea eagles..im thinking maybe a few of the boys over in NZ for the game tomorrow. Half the guys you mentioned above were recruited externally. You have to remember, not only are our juniors spread across two clubs at Harold Matts and SG Ball, but the best of the Ball players are currently in our Summer Squad, with many earmarked for more focus on Flegg, Cup and even NRL progression.
Whilst not unique to our club, being a young NRL squad, with a focus on developing junior talent, rather than simply filling spots externally, many of our best and brightest are sucked up higher, earlier. Likely more so than many other clubs with establish, seasoned and even successful first graders.
If we stacked a single SG Ball side with who's eligible, the Magpies would be shit hot every week. But the eye is on the future and the bigger prizes long term, not winning junior comps for the sake of it.
Latu, Tallyn, Feledy, Fa'agutu, Miller, Mason, Sukkar and Galvin are all either eligible this year, or just out of eligibility recently.
We don't stack our junior sides at the moment.
They don’t seem to have any trouble scoring points, need to improve their defence.Wests ended up losing 36 to 26. A bit of a comeback, but looks like we just gave ourselves too much to chase.
Half the guys you mentioned above were recruited externally.
Also, you don’t think Parramatta and the Knights would be in the same boat today.
I did, you said NRL squad not NRL team. What makes you think that other teams don’t have their best juniors playing up a grade? When I mentioned external recruitment, I was referring to the NRL squad. It helps if you read my actual post.
And no. I don't. For the reasons I highlighted earlier.
Wasn't my argument in the slightest.I did, you said NRL squad not NRL team. What makes you think that other teams don’t have their best juniors playing up a grade?
remember the name Chevey Stewart, you’ll see the SG Ball aged fullback playing in first grade most likely against us in round 2.
Another although no longer Eligible is Issah Ilongi. Penrith resisted playing him in SGBall when recruited and played him in Flegg only to finish the year in the Cup GF 2 years back, and they are set with Dylan Edwards in the top squad. Why would they bother playing Ilongi before his time?
What I will say is that historically we’ve made a mission to promote a bunch of semi talented (locals) kids whom probably felt entitled to play first grade coz the players in front of them were either has beens, born agains or rookies themselves.
But we don’t have special soil or magical watery where our player nursery is cultivated.
The kids are just as good anywhere else.
On the topic.Wasn't my argument in the slightest.
That's a complete strawman.
I was alluding to the sheer size of the catchment and the participation numbers in our junior base yielding very strong squads, coupled with the fact that we fill two teams, rather than stack one.
I also didn't say that we're the only ones blooding young talent, that would be an idiotic statement.
You see, when people post, it behooves you to look at the subtlety and nuance in what they're ACTUALLY saying.
And don't pretend like you're being some kind of 'scoop' with your 'remember the name' comment. You can't even spell 'Chevy' correctly. I've been following his progress at Canberra for over 2 years.
He's a good-un.
If you're going to engage in disagreement with somebody's point (which is a good thing), at least take the time to read the original post and understand it first.
Not a bad idea, I agree, I think they're gonna have to figure something out, because the sheer growth, particularly out west is going to see the catchment numbers grow healthily over the next few years hopefully. On the topic.
I would prefer we put 1 stacked team together for both grades but understand with the logistics of it etc that it wouldn’t be right to pull the kids from their local representation plus schooling etc so a Wests and Balmain Junior Rep makes more sense.
However prehaps it should be considered for SGBall age? This is the comp that has a mixture of Flegg players in it as it is now an under 19s comp.
Most of the kids playing would no longer be in school.
It might make us more competitive and create a direct pathway plan for the Flegg season for the players that have finished schooling.
