I don't get all the drama. Its not like he is a marquee signing and we desperately needed outside backs last year.

Give him a chance and see how he goes.

Its not even a signing. Its a trial for a State Cup contract.

Amazing how much drama there is over a trial for a State Cup contract.

Says a lot about this forum really.

…..and it's worthy of ten pages.

I think the people who are having a shot at the people who are upset about this are missing the point. It is not the fact it is Shannon McDonnell returning so much, it's the message that bringing him back sends… Promising change, and then doing the same ol' thing.

I can see the knockers loosing the plot when we hit our bad patch sometime this year, this is what they will say when the time comes " well what do you expect we have signed 2nd tier players McDonnell, Naiqama and sign has been like Heighno".
I can hear the axes being sharpened .

What I'm hoping is that if we do hit a rough patch with injuries we've got the depth to bring in like for like replacements in those positions, and that by underspending on the 2015 cap we won't be forced to just keep shuffling players out of position to cover injuries. In the last few years we've seen centres and backrowers in the halves, we've seen slow forwards defending in the outside backs and both Sheens and Potter were regularly shuffling 3 or more players to cover each injury. That's what happens when you run out of depth players, or haven't allowed for the cap space to use the players you theoretically have under contract.

So if the Tigers have ruled out any big name transfers for the next few years, and if our depth signings are restricted to leftovers coming back from England, then hopefully it'll be worth it to never repeat the stupidity of Blake Austin at five eighth or Bodene Thompson in the centres.

Whingers and whiners that moan about whingers, even lamer than the whingers themselves, who have somewhat of a point when we are only signing neville reggie and his bros and no first graders of note

Cosimo spot on . But some were saying here that Austin was a 5/8 :unamused:

Wow, that was a hell of a slip. I meant to say Blake Ayshford, referring back to the Sheenius days when even Liam Fulton got a run in the halves. Blake Austin is a debate for another thread.

Let the Canberra fans debate that issue, there has been enough here.

This is why we need a fourth fullback ASAP.

If you don't want to watch the whole thing, the general gist of it is that Rowe, Moltzen and Tedesco are still being babied in rehab, and aren't expected in full training for at least another four weeks. If the Tigers had to play tomorrow we'd be running Simona or Moses at fullback, and it's not like we've got too many options at centre or five eighth either. If McDonnell is fit to go straight into full contact in preseason, then he's probably worth having if only to give the boys an experienced fullback to train with. If a couple of our fullbacks come good before the trials then we don't even have to sign him, in the meantime he trains on an extended trial.

Kevin Naqaima is the 2nd best fullback at the club.

Mitchell Moses is the 2nd best fullback at the club Naiqama is a midget , he is 3 inches shorter than Hodgson was and probably shorter than Mighty Mouse

I'm not thrilled about this situation, but having had a think about it, what else could we expect? It's not like we're going to shell out $200k for a decent FG player to play State Cup. Everyone wants to play FG but not everyone does, and the fact is, we need someone we can afford without breaking the bank so to speak. McDonnell is looking for a chance so here we are.

You'd rather like for like replacements though, rather than always doing the Sheens thing of changing two or more positions to cover one injury. On paper Moses starts at five eighth, a position where we have even fewer replacement options with sironen still not in full training. If the Tigers had to play tomorrow, Naiqama would be needed on the left wing as Nofauluma is 6-8 weeks from full training. If Nofo isn't expected to do a full contact session till march, I think Naiqama will probably be at number 2 when the regular season kicks off.

Which once again leaves us short a fullback. I think trialing McDonnel at no risk is exactly the right thing to do. It's not like there's pressure from the tigers to commit.

Isn't that what someone like Chance Peni was signed for? The new coach comes in with an open mind and I wouldn't be surprised if some fringe kids like Graham or Peni are blooded early in order to have some experience under their belt come 2016.

Haven't seen any of him at all but Peni is a junior international. Realistically you'd say he'd be far ahead of McDonnell in the queue and maybe even next in line if there's an injury. McDonnell is a state cup trial, that's it.
