When do banks generate good profit?
When interest rates are rising.
The only way is up my friends. 😉

Banks generate profits regardless of the interest rate. They pay investors less than the central rate, and charge borrowers more.

It is a license to print money. Only time they lose is when loans default and they cannot recover the amount owing through selling assets. This scenario is generally when property prices fall and rates rise.

It’s a sea of red. The banks are off nearly 7%

There are once in a decade bargains, but I'm going to hold off for a couple of weeks

Yesterday I noticed a little bit of love for bargains later in the day , but it wasn’t enough to stop the slide. Where do you see the bottom ? Are we close? Either way there’s bound to be plenty of investors who are also toilet roll stockpilers I suppose?

Yeah they're the ones responsible for the market crash..

The oil cartel is split on a decision to maintain artificially high crude prices, in view of the downturn in demand. Saudi has ramped up production and reduced their price, sparking a trade war with Russia. As of 1st April all oil producers will be free to set their own price. If the Aus$ holds it’s ground this could be an economic stimulus here. We can expect to see a drop in prices at the bowser as early as end of next week, depending on the local cycle.

I follow a version of Roger Montgomery's framework, at the moment I am happy with:
CHS, RMD, CSL, ANN, and CAJ (note: heavy on high end medical industries)

I said I'd hold off, but couldn't resist. Today bought CBA and South32.

I think regarding coronavirus there's actually a bit of good news about - thanks to the lockdowns it seems to have fizzled out in China and now doing the same in South Korea.

South32 been a rough ride. I bought in at ~$1.50, it got up to over $4.00 from memory? And has lost some value over the last year or two, settling around $2.50 - $3.00. And now of course it's off the charts low.

Yeah it has been wild, but I reckon it's the most undervalued miner on the ASX (of those big enough to be relatively safe). And the current low share price means better value for the ongoing share buyback - they've got $250 million allocated to this.

Nice. I'll see how things go and might top up if it gets lower. Has had a resurgence today though! Somewhat anyway.. Still way down from where we were.

I know it will bounce back at some stage but it's getting very frustrating right now - probably dropped $200k in the past week from my super fund.
Looking at buying but it's anybody's guess where the bottom is. With most countries throwing around billions in stimulus packages surely it can't keep going down.
Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon locking out Europe has thrown a spanner in the works...

Have gone to buy in on 1 or 2 stocks but hesitated each time, luckily. Can't believe it's still falling at the level it is. Might as well hold out a little longer. The bottom is somewhere.. Hopefully soon

Another GFC/Great Depression style day on the markets.

We live in interesting times.

Yes I think the stock market needs to see a plan from our Federal Govt and needs to see it fast or our free fall will continue

Mate I am a self funded retiree and my Super is down 70 grand in a month. So I changed my super from shares to cash today. Figure I will not make any money but will stoop the spiral and will revert back to shares if and when the tables turn

We changed our super to cash 2 weeks ago. Still lost a bit, but wasn't too much.

I got talked out of it by a mate two weeks ago..probably cost me 40 grand.

Will be interesting to see how the market reacts to the whopping fall on the Dow? Will Scomo’s stimulus pkg be enough to cushion the fall? Being Friday 13th won’t help either.

Futures were saying down 7% and it's currently down 7.7%. Looking at share prices there looks to be some bargains but it's anyone's guess if we've hit the bottom. Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon stuffing his speech yesterday didn't help.
