Good post, You are correct about the photo op, but i think sooner or later it needed to be done.

It's all about, the US v China, attacking NZ means attacking Aust. and attacking Aust. would also mean attacking the US.

There are 6 countries who have nuclear submarines and only once has the US shared its nuclear power technology with another country and that was the UK.

I recall the Pig (F-111) made our neighbours nervous with its capabilities. I always loved that aircraft together with the gravel trucks.

Gravel Trucks?

Caribou - the greatest aircraft of all time. The Pratt and Whitney engines sound like gravel trucks.

No doubt the French will get massive pay out for doing very little. Good luck to them for stooging our boy scout pollies.

It depends on the contract and what milestones (if any) have not been met. This has been building for a while. It certainly will have China off-guard.

Apparently the new subs will be based in WA. It may see US subs based there as well.

Which port suitable? Don't know W A well.

HMAS Stirling is the naval base in WA. Coincidently, it is located on Garden Island.

I live 15 km from Garden Island. See the Collins class now and then go up the water from work. Good spot for a base. They keep it tight as. Get arrested if you venture . close.

My son and his wife are at Safety Bay. Are you near there?

Wellard. In Kwinana.

Not far at all.

Yeah. Not bad spot apart from no NRL games haha

It's not even worth responding to IMO, no one is ever going to attack NZ lol.

Interesting thought experiment, nuclear fusion is gaining traction, does NZ's non-nuclear stance apply to fusion technology? It would be foolish to abandon net gain energy generation.

Nuclear fusion is still decades off from commercial reality, if ever. They won’t even have the theoretical 20 Tesla coil (magnet) ready until 2035 at the earliest to see if a sustained reaction is even possible.

It's not just the media doing it on their own, rather politically driven. Our PM wears his flag style mask mainly to appeal to a certain male cohort and amplify a stance, which we are about to see an expansion of with xenophobia at the forefront of an election campaign strategy.

Happy if time proves me wrong and hope that you and others won't be subjected to hate on the back of an escalation I am sure is coming.

The submarine bit is basically just another announcement lacking substance at this point and much more so posturing.

Naval shipbuilding, new shipyards and refit facilities have always been subject to politics. Osborne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide and the BAE Systems facility at Henderson in WA are good examples.

The problems with the French sub programme have lead us to this point. 8 years of difficulties with no replacement in sight for the Collins Class. Our serviceman and women deserve better. A joke doing the rounds is the French idea of local content is an Adelaide pizza bar.

At this stage, a proven design, most likely the RN Astute with a US combat system will be selected. It is proven, in-service and the operational requirement is to have the boats in service as quickly as can be arranged.

Strategically, we are likely to see more US troops and even subs based in Australia. At present, there is a UK Carrier taskforce in/around the South China Sea.

We await the reaction from Bejiing.

This is beaten wife syndrome. Did Beijing await our reaction when they increased their military spending by a third in the last 5 years? When they recently boosted their nuke stockpile? When they tried to take over the whole South China Sea? When they launch daily air force incursions into Taiwanese and Japanese territory? When they decided to occupy areas of Bhutan, and tried to do the same in Indian border areas? When they launch industrial scale repression on minorities like Uighurs and Tibetans? When they launch hacking attacks on our parliament, universities, businesses? Their hacking of the BoM supercomputer cost the Australian taxpayer a fortune. What about when they launched a trade war against us, that is still ongoing? What about when Australian journalists had to flee an attempt at 'hostage diplomacy'? Not to mention my strong suspicion that they tried to cover up the leak of a certain virus from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

In summary, why should we care at all what Beijing thinks?

Obviously our Govt doesn't as the decision has been made.

The sabre rattling makes me uncomfortable.

What should be addressed is the failure to successfully conclude the procurement of the Shortfin Barracuda. That is a very expensive failure.

Sad isn't it and to see Christopher Pyne leave and head straight into defence contracting was the icing on the slush fund cake. To now be waiting another 20 years or so for a smaller fleet is joke like.

Yep. There is a lot of money around $90bn involved. Over $2bn as reported on 9 to payout the French. I have little doubt the US and UK have no qualms gazumping the French to get a slice of the pie.

Yes there is a long way to go, initiating the reaction was the first step, sustaining it will be the next major challenge, considering the temperatures resemble something like that of within the core of the sun.

While our country is pouring the extra billions of dollars into Defence, NZ knows that they will benefit from this new alliance as well, Because it will be in the best interest of Aust. to defend NZ from any future foreign attacks. If Aust. is attacked then NZ is gone, but no country will attack NZ without also knowing that this would also mean attacking Aust, And this security for NZ should not be given for free.

Really if China wants to attack they will. This is just a photo op for a few polies after a rough 2 years. Do you think the announcement of this will prevent a Chinese invasion? Oh they will have these subs in 10 years time? Crap we better put off those invasion plans.
Really if they were keen you have told them to do it in the next few years.
This is a photo op.

Media seem to be stoking McCarthyism style red scare. Generates views I suppose.

So.......Hong Kong didnt happen? Xi threats to take Taiwan by force in 2019 didnt happen? Belt and Road isnt happening? The South China Sea Islands didnt just appear? China/US trade war?

Nothing to see here?

Jacinta Ardern has announced the yet to be built Australian nuclear propelled submarines are banned from NZ waters.

Jacinta is never shy to jump onto a zero cost opportunity to virtue signal.

If the subs are any good, she wont even know.

I have no doubt she would be happy for NZ firms to subcontract on the build.

I would hope that they are excluded. Why should they profit from it if we will not be able to enter their territorial waters?

Australia should declare that we promise not to use the submarines to enter NZ territorial waters, not even to defend NZ.

They won’t even have the theoretical 20 Tesla coil (magnet) ready until 2035 at the earliest to see if a sustained reaction is even possible.

the Iter looks promissing

Incremental steps only. They are not even at the point to say that they can sustained reactions let alone sustain reactions where the output exceeds the input. They can't even say it is a decade away, meaning it's decades away, if ever. Promising progress perhaps, but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

Yes there is a long way to go, initiating the reaction was the first step, sustaining it will be the next major challenge, considering the temperatures resemble something like that of within the core of the sun.

It needs to be hotter than the Sun to sustain a reaction because the Sun’s gravitational pressures don’t exist here on earth. That’s the hurdle and why such powerful magnets are needed to hold the plasma in place at such extreme temperatures. No material could ever do so, the temperatures are too great.. We are still a long way off.

Yeah, it would be amazing if they pull it off though, net gain power, carbon neutral. It's a tick in every box.
