Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Ok lett’s hope we run with your theory, don’t worry about speed or attacking ability, let’s just field a team of 17 good defenders every week and we will try win all our games 12-6.
Based on your theory Patrick Herbert should get selected ahead of Jake Averillo every week as he is a stonger defender.
So why do you change what I say ....

I have said that we should be setting a goal of keeping sides to around 18 to 20 pts on average each week

We have to fix our defence before we seriously focus on our attack

How do you plan on outscoring Penrith , Dolphins Roosters Cronulla etc...what win 60 to 58 ??

And your never ever reply on my comments regarding Cleary , Robinson and Bellamy ....are they wrong with defence 1st focus
Or are you the next breakout NRL coach to replace Cleary and Bellamy ??

It’s quite obvious a decent team needs to be able to defend well.
What you are not wanting to understand is teams resilience to defend well generally only lasts so long if their attack is dull and boring and not converting strong defence into points.
Surely our back half of the 2026 season is evidence of this, the team was quite often in games by defending well and had no attack whatsoever.
The defensive resolve would then crumble late in the 1st half and/or in the 2nd half because of it.
A team’s defensive mindset is always much stronger when their team is making good yardage, making its fair share of tackle breaks and line breaks which obviously assists with field position.
If we continue with the tactics of going one out with no hint of any expansive play out of our own end, we will get the same results.
But, it’s not much point playing expansive when you don’t have the players with the right amount of speed and tackle breaking ability to make it work or at least threaten to make it work.

You keep raving about our attack first , yet the Top 3 coaches place an emphasis on defence 1st
Who is wrong for the 12th time ....you or them

I think he’s a good depth signing . I don’t get the issue at all . The starting lineup is all but set re. Bula Masi may averillo turuva . Whether you agree or not . Then it’s by my reckoning mason/new kid from dogs/attard , tavana Saukuru Herbert Schiller . I don’t really get what the argument is about to be honest

Yeah, and add Tupou who based on his late season form would likely be ahead of most of that bunch too.

I’m telling you for the unteenth time that the roster we had for 2026 did not have the right amount of speed, tackle break ability or attacking flair to worry our opponents icoming out of our own half, particularly once we had a few injuries.
Onbviously Benji agrees that lack of speed and attacking ability out wide is a problem with the signing of Averillo who is not a great defender, but a very good attacking player.

And as frigging typical you don't answer my question about you knowing more than Cleary , Bellamy and Robinson

WE HAVE TO FIX OUR DERENCE FIRST

I'm not arguing about our attack , yes we need more points , but the less you need to score the better and easier it is

So are you going to answer the question .....or is there something wrong with you

Just a reminder 16th worse defence in the NRL , but defence isn't the problem as long as you can score 40 plus every week

This squad based on the current signings ISNT capable of scoring 40 each week

So your solution .....score more points , don't reduce the number you need

Like arguing with a child that speaks another language

Na - we’ll get some speed and attacking players.
That way we can lose 70-68

I literally forgot about him . You’re right . Definitely . When you frame it like that with the bench back role , there’s positions and depth there . Chuck in Hayze Dunster , who might be moving to edge forward , and we have time to develop some players

I have answered your question that yes the top coaches quite obviously know what they are doing and rely on a top quality defence to win premierships.
The top coaches also have plenty of attacking quality to work with.
I’ve explained to you it’s a balance as you cannot be too lopsided either way.
Last years defence was atrocious at times, but not as bad as our attack which quite often had numerous tackles in the opposing red zone for no result and you could count on one hand how many tries we scored from within our own half.
As I keep saying, good attack assists the defence being much better also due to often having better field position due to the good attacking play, often having the opponents needing to catch their breath after defending long line breaks and not being able to condense their defence as much as they would like due to fear of being burned for speed out wide.
Have a think about that and ask yourself the question, how many times did our opponents have to worry about any of the above mentioned scenarios when defending against us for the majority of the 2026 season, particularly the games after round 8 or 9 when we started being effected by injuries?

Where did you hear that Dunster may move to the edge?

Loving these signings, going after styles of players that are required rather than some of the other random signings. We need a right centre and speed out wide Averillo ticks that box. We need leg speed through the middle (as Terrell and Twally have little) Mann and Frizzell tick that box. Brayley adds that guile with the ball through the middle. Mann Frizzell and Brayley also add experience which is much needed. I also think Schiller would also be a good depth signing.

Thoughts?

Bula
Turuva
Averillo
May
Makasini
Latu
Douehi
May
Api
Twal
KPP
Fainu
Mann

Brailey
Pole
Frizell
Seyfarth

Not too bad, way better bench. This year we had some shocking benches. The biggest question mark for me is halves. I still don’t know how we get on with Douehi at 7 after his theatrics.

Good defence helps your attack ....you get in better field position at the end of sets , your not scrambling madly every defensive set and tiring out your defence and attack

You spoke about a few games when kept sides to low scores ....Newcastle and Parra come to mind
It was the oppositions shocking completion rates that kept us in the game , not our excellent defence
I know I'm wasting my time , but we need to spend the first 3 or 4 months of the season getting our defence right
This current squad isn't going to trouble the scoreboard attendants and needs multiple upgrades in recruitment for the 2028

As much as I hate to say this , we are going to be bottom 4 unless we can fix our DERENCE dramatically
