Spot on Strongee, Pascoe has nailed just about everything he's set out to do. Turned a profit, signed a top line coach, presided over the securing of juniors. Only the Robbie and Ivan debacle have been issues, and to say they're directly of his malevolent doing is a long bow to draw.

Was brought in when Taylor was already here. Blindsighted by clearly (as were we all). Best coach we've ever had now.

Intentions were right with the Robbie debacle and it was early in his tenure.

Had a massive cap issue to repair for most of his tenure so missing finals is almost a given.

If you reward CEOs who take short term over long term, like we always have, we'll never get out of our hole.

I think the coach we had that won 3 premierships including one for us, only coach to get us to play finals football and was the guy that brought through our best crop of juniors ever has the right to be considered our best coach over someone who has a worse resume and has not even led us to finals football!

I don’t remember anyone complaining when he signed Cleary. I’ve been on this forum for a decade and never seen the forum collectively fawn over anyone the way it did over Ivan. The forum was on the bus and loved it. No one saw what he did coming, and to think Pascoe should have is ridiculous. The rest i’ll grant you, but the Cleary thing is rubbish.


Agreed and even if Cleary was a poor decision inhindsight, at least it meant getting rid of Taylor.

My goodness the Taylor days were very dark times indeed.

Not really, Madge is a better coach but his ability to attract talent is on par with JT.

Agree, but it shows the problems ran much deeper than Taylor, which at the time no one wanted to believe.


What do you deem to be the deep seated problems deeper than Taylor? Board (totally changed), fitness staff(totally changed), coaching staff (totally changed), finances (totally changed), Salary cap management (totally different)?

Salary cap situation was atrocious and hamstrung that period horribly. On top of that, the new CEO undermined the coach as his first action.

Someone mentioned it. Pascoe’s strength is finance, and if he was judged on what he has brought on for west’s tigers in that area alone it would be commendable and that even including the loss of cap for Robbie deal. In saying that though this is where we haven’t quite got our house in order. Giving full autonomy to one person in order to conduct and provide deals is where we came un stuck. we need a team making those decisions and signing off on those deals. But I’m sure we have learnt from that. So not to rehash the past any further.
In present I believe Pascoe is a wiz behind the scenes for us but as a face of the Tigers this is the part that I don’t agree with. He never tries to look presentable. He either tries to be a joke when he needs to be serious or if he is being serious he communicates to the fan base in this arrogant corporate speak where he doesn’t answer the concerns head on he gives political looping answers
For mine he’d be a perfect CFO but hasn’t got the right character to be a CEO.

How can one manipulate a fact? It’s a fact or it isn’t.

Did he cop a fine which we’re still struggling with? Yep.

Did he say he’d only release Matterson if we got a favourable outcome? Yep.

Has he been through 3 coaches in 4 years? Yep

Has he ever taken us to the finals? Nope.

They’re the facts. But we’re getting a gym at least!

I know this has been said before but I think the strategy of building from the bottom, in other words sign a swathe of promising juniors from around the league and develop them patiently is really the way to go for the Tigers. As many have said, we just don’t have the drawing power of other clubs to snare the marque players, actually we plain haven’t earned any type of drawing power. Nearly all of our star players have come from within, Benji being the classic example. Maybe when we have begun to assemble a talented squad, established a stable coaching and management team we will begin to be attractive to the elite players, who should be signed based on need or an attempt to provide the icing on the cake. By developing players from the junior ranks there is a much better chance of establishing team harmony and avoiding attitudes of entitlement and selfishness. It’s a proven recipe. Look at the Storm.

Thats exactly what is happening. We are building from the ground up. Its refreshing and why i refuse to entertain the sky is falling brigade.

Interesting side note is what Maguire comes back from England with. Canberra had the same problem attracting top line talent. They worked out a way around it. Smart operators usually do. Others sign players like Rankin and Packer.
