None of the issues you mention could not have been handled. Matterson would have sooked…so what. Let him sit there and sook until we had a deal in place. Hung around like a bad smell? So what. Off season, tons of time to wait and make a deal. If we kept him a month longer we could have dealt him for Stefano…or part of a JAC deal…an Origin level player on 450 would not have been hard to move.
Revisit these comments in light of what just happened with Latrell and Roosters.
I think you underestimate how important team harmony and culture is, especially to a redeveloping club like Tigers, and how even mildly negative impacts can unravel a team.
Mitch Pearce pretended to root a dog once and the entire season for Easts was ruined. From a distance, Pearce was just being a fool and it was not related to any other player at a personal or public level, yet the team was absolutely and entirely derailed.
So Roosters could have held Latrell indefinitely whilst trying to use him as a bargaining chip. Roosters did not get a single thing in transfer for Latrell - he was not used as leverage in any deal favouring Roosters. Even to the ultimate point where Roosters both paid out his old manager AND released him with 2 months pay under his belt to their arch-nemesis. Roosters basically burned a tens and perhaps hundreds of thousands whilst Latrell went fishing in Taree.
And lo, 2 weeks later, their ready-made Latrell replacement does his ACL. Arguably, in hindsight, Roosters really could/should have held Latrell until a deal came up that was specifically in their favour. I mean, they are the Roosters, by many accounts they can do what they please.
Tigers avoided all that nonsense, all the media circus, by releasing Matto before the pre-season. And that's without even giving a moment's thought to the potential bargaining position wrt Stefano, about which we can only speculate.
