Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Everyone is forgetting that november is the what the Tigers are waiting for re signings. At this time Penrith,Broncos,Canterbury and others will release many players as will all clubs.Players in the top 4 clubs on low contracts will be after more dollars and will have to be released owing to salary cap. Penrith and Broncos especially have great juniors that will want a crack at first grade.I think the Tigers will have a plan to bid at this time

Plus the NRL is still sorting out salary cap stuff and development player stuff. There won’t be much movement until clubs know exactly what’s going on.

Rorters are using young Flanagan as an escape goat for poor run in the NRL finals .. I reckon they will be keen to move him on so they can go with young Lachlan Lam or whiz kid Sam Walker. Flanagan is a decent goal kicker .. shall i dare suggest we move Brooks on, and have a shot at Flanagan .. ??

I take him in a heart beat

Brooks fans are always saying if he was on the Roosters team he would be a good player.

Make the deal Maguire, ill take Flanagan please.

Flanagan is nowhere near an NRL level no 7,and his sole asset is goalkicking.
Brooks was nowhere near an NRL level no7 in 2020,and his sole asset is his defence..but he was once, and **we need to give him a season to get back there without the Benji factor.**
No more duds
BTW,theres a real scarcity of no7s in what has become a power game these days..gotta be real special to stand out(Cleary/Williams/Reynolds are about the only ones).Youve gotta wonder whether the game has changed so much that u mite be better with a Douhi at 7??

I can handle any more of those excuses for Brooks, they keep coming however.

I can't stand the excuses as well. I don't think Brooks is that bad but Benji isn't Brooks problem.

At the same time when I see Brooks have a good game he deserves credit. That game where he kicked to AD and we won was a great game by Brooksy. I think he can perform but he has to be consistent as well as be a little better than his current top level.

I think though comparing him to other halves is a good idea. For instance Mitch Moses has been talked up on here as being a really good player but I don't think he is any better than Brooks.

Are there any decent half backs to sign available on the market?
I don't believe WT and/or Parra can win a premiership with their current half backs. They both appear to lack qualities required to lead their respective teams in big moments. Don't have an answer just general observations.

This is basically my point . If someone emerges and takes the job , I’m ok with it , but there just isn’t enough decent halfbacks around , of which brooks is. Is that going to deliver us a premiership , it’s not looking good , but he’s not crap . He’s pretty good actually .

I just mentioned this. How many good halves are there out there ? I don't think Cleary is that great and he is I suppose the pick of the halves now. Adam Reynolds is pretty good but he has some mistakes in his game. Cleary lacks creativity. He is solid and reliable and in a quality team he does his job.

I remember halves like Andrew Johns and Alan Langer. The difference between guys like that and Cleary is massive.

The thing with Cleary is whenever the team needs something to give them a lift or to swing momentum he seems to be Johnny in the spot, he’s always in the action......brooks can go missing at the time you need him to be coming up with those plays.
Also Cleary has a very good 5/8 next to him and it’s been the same guy all year, continuity is something we haven’t had for a few years.
Brooks has had Marshall, Reynolds, Walters and Doeuhi this year, it would be hard to maintain a standard when the other playmaker is a different face each week.

I’m almost certain there was develop issues raised about 5 years ago in regards to halves . It might have been Joey Johns , but the basic principal was that elite youth coaches were coaching players to play on 1 side of the field / play in corridors , and not play “eyes up” footy . It was because of the way the NRL was basically a wrestle off , and a grind , requiring blocks and structure.
Then Covid hits, rules change , and players who ad lib a bit are killing teams . Eg Cody Walker . Was made to look like a reserve grader when he played origin last year . If he plays this year , I honestly think the Maroons are in trouble due to the rule changes. Also he’s 30. Wasn’t apart of that generation that Brooks and Moses etc we’re apart of .
I think there’s something to that . Why are the most creative players in today’s game usually the 1, and sometimes the 6 . Massive contrast to generations past .

I would still happily entertain Sezer as our 7 if Brooks can't rise to the occasion by about 1/3 into season next year. If not Sezer, make a decision one way or the other on Madden.

This thread has deteriorated into a "Brooks bashing thread". I always avoid those threads as they tedious and repetitive. But now the Brooks bashing is corrupting the one thread I always follow.

There are plenty of threads to bash Brooks. Can't we keep it all in them.

Actually Cleary has developed significantly this year, and is a real go-to player.Odds on to win Dally m player oty for good reason
Brooks and Moses have both gone backwards..significantly.
IMO our sole alternative at 7is Douhi, because theres nothing else out there. And Douhi cld be more useful at 6 or 4

We need to improve our defence and goalkicking so that 3 or 4 trys is enough for us to win.

Attitude, discipline, fitness and speed are all issues. Discipline and fitness ate linked, if we fix one we can afford to not improve the other but we couldn't defend penalties and errors under fatigue in 2020.

On this forum if any player or coach does good it’s only because everyone else at the club makes them look good ?

Cleary is a brilliant halfback, best in the league at the moment and can do everything. Scores tries, sets them up, defends well and his kicking and goal kicking is exceptional.

If memory is correct Adam Blair left Wests Tigers early on compassionate grounds. Slightly simialar to what Addo Carr is seeking except Wests Tiger, unlike Melbourne, did' not ask for an equal ability replacement as part of the replacement.

TBH Douhi would probably be our best 7, 6, 4 and 1 at the moment. We need more Adams.

He’s similar to Mbye in regards to idk if he’s going to nail down one particular position. The difference with Doueihi though is he’s a keeper.

We have another one called Moses. tried in a couple of positions but people want to move them. Master's of nothing. brought as a fullback but has to be moved because not quite good enough but paid to much to be dropped.

Too early to tell either way ..might take 2 more seasons ...you usually learn a lot from a loss ........when Cronk gets his hands on him 24/7 once CV isn't it around

Having Cronk whining in his ear isn't going to transform him. Look at Moses with Andrew Johns. No matter how great your cloth is it's still impossible to polish a ?.
