Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Still getting over Luc leaving. He was one of the few positives over the past years. We got him at a fair price, with the hope of developing one, of the following traits. With only potential to work with, he certainly justified the recruitment. Great footwork before the line, offload, fend, and gas for a backrower. We would have been happy with 55mins as an attacking option. But to be the archetype 80min backrower, trim down in his 1st offseason and keep it off and produce the seasons like he did, I am truly gutted. Foxsports had an interview with a rugby league analyst that they just hired and he was spooking how good the RL channel was going to be and he was talking about how coaches use stats, that the average SC player doesn't eg tackle efficiency vs time played vs runs, including off the ball. And by way of promoting this new analysis, he puts up a list of the best forwards from a coaches perspective, Luc was ranked 2 and apparently his numbers were consistent the year b4 as well, in fact the top 3 on that list were different to the winner and nominees for the Dally M 2nd rower. Whilst he is by name a Dragons junior, he is a Wests Tigers product and one we could have promoted as a refined NRL star a far cry from the overweight, unfit 25min player. Madge deserve credit for that, regardless of ones opinion on his control of the dressing room. Even worse is that we rejoiced at IPAPS signing, but we are back to square 1. As we are supposed to build from last year, Isiah should have made the second of our quality backrow. Loosing Luc we are the same team essentially. No doubt the messy Joey break up was the catalyst.

Yea your right with the games he played for us once joey got dropped his own game fell away a bit .got worse when they played on same edge as each other .Your right bout back to square 1 but couple of youthful backrowers coming through its just a matter if they can stand up defensively

Cheers CFK

NRL Survivor, our left edge was the worst kept secret regarding defensive strategy, even before Luc was a tiger. Teams target our left and thus he will get traffic sent at him more, this is extenuated by the number of attacking sets, in our twenty that go left. Even then Luc is not the cause, of trys, as all teams run run their own versions of block plays with their own variations, and I have yet to see a block play that is designed to catch the 2nd Rower out of place. Are they not designed to target the centre, forcing them to make a decision about the xtra man, by this time Nofa has panicked and come out of the line. So many of our tries conceded came from set plays. 14 try causes for Luc, Lucky for him Todd Payten thinks he's one hell of a defender. That kind of money is only spent on 80min backrowers, whose game is built around defence. Should make for a good game next year.

Can't mods just move all posts about Liddle/Simpkin to another thread? Our agent there any mods left after kuls hissy? This thread has always had some crap in it but these days it's out of control. Liddle's tack efficiency has nothing to do with signings or rumours.
Putting up Liddle as trade bait is one thing, but people need a cold shower, shut up, stop derailing every thread. 300 posts about Liddle in the rumoured signings thread is absurd. And this is just one example.

It's interesting The Luki situation. He seems to be on a train and trial deal. He can join us and be at training on Monday if he wants to. There's no need to swap for someone that isn't contracted.

My guess he's still choosing between leaving his home for money or stay with what's comfortable. Maybe the cows have offered him 3 year deal for 300k, and maybe we've offered 3 years for 1.2 and he hasn't decided what deal he wants so he's on a train and trial so he can keep training in the meantime.

He's got to ask himself though, with Leilua coming on big money and still the likes of Hess, Taumololo, Dunn and his mate Nanai, where does he fit in?

Luch wanted Origin level pay when he wasn't an Origin level player. He stood out in a pack of forwards that had some players who were average at best. Put Luch in a Storm or Panthers forward pack and his deficiencies suddenly become pretty evident. For the money he wanted, we could buy a much better player than what Luch will ever be.

For years people on here have been crying about paying overs for average players and this time, the club didn't pay overs for an average, yet some people are still crying on here.

Absolutely correct,Lucy can't tackle and will be a costly liability at the cowboys earning almost twice as much as he should be

I don’t know what some on here want , Liddle is not origin class but he is a good 1st grade player , doesn’t miss many tackles has great pace , just needs to fine tune his play around the ruck maybe Farah can work on that

He was the 2nd worst hooker in the NRL this year for Try Causes and Line Break causes in defence. He's a massive liability in our middle defence. Probably coincides with his lack of stamina

This says it all. And the liddle lovers will still defend him and blame everyone else.

Buy "Liddle Lovers" do you mean Realists?
There's 16/17 Teams, 4-5 Top Class hookers in the game (Maybe less) Unless we're getting one of those (Which we're not),
Then I'd prefer much prefer Liddle Stays.... LONG TERM!!

Liddle is not at the top level, But our Team as a whole are not at that level (Yet)
Both may never be... People here need to accept that.

I've seen a gazillion sack him, sack that guy - This guy is crap posts,
But NOT ONE is followed up with a realistic, suggested player to fill the position
I'd be throwing 1.2 at B Smith, I seriously don't think that would land him....
We're just not that appealing right now... I doubt we ever were, Or even will be....

The only way we'll ever land those type of players - Is buy building a tough, mid level side that shows to be on the up. Get the numbers right and then land that big fish...
We're not there yet, And I for one... AM NOT letting the Hooker or Half go anywhere until we firmly have our hands on a much better option - Which we don't.
End of Story.

I'm not suggesting that we just let him go for the sake of it. I'm just correcting the lies that were written saying that he's a strong defender. He just isn't and the statistics prove it. I want any player with a WT jersey on to play well, succeed and win games. But Jacob needs to improve alot for that to occur

Which statistics are you referring to? - His 92(ish) % Tackle efficiency?
If we had a goal kicker that kicked that well, He'd be the pride of the team....

87% actually. And his 10 try and 13 linebreak causes in 20 matches. He missed 65 tackles last season, second most for the club (funnily enough the apparently great defensive half Brooks missed the most tackles in 70 for the season). He needs to be better

92.1% according to Wests Tigers site - You really love bashing this guy - In fact you are nearly rivaling Paws and his bashing of Madge.

Good on you - say it enough and a few people will believe you (in fact a few have), I'm sure you'll get a few more on the bandwagon to bash Lids as the weeks go by.

Sorry to add to the Liddle/Simpkin posts but I wanted to clarify for everyone, the tackle efficiency stats are measured differently on nrl.com versus fox sports lab. Fox sports lab are stricter on tackles. If someone flops in late then they don’t count that as a tackle whereas nrl.com does. Fox sports lab are again strict with their definition of efficiency. Both ineffective tackles and missed tackles are included in the denominator. For some reason, fox sports don’t round their stats, so an efficiency of 87.9 is incorrectly shown as 87… For the Liddle vs Simpkin debate it’s much of a muchness as they’re both within 1% of each other when comparing on the same platform. The issue becomes when you compare across platforms. Then you could make ones stats look better than the other to suit your argument.

do you know how each determines what a try assist is? or which is the better to go off?

I’m not sure about NRL.com. Pretty sure fox sports stats bases it on person who most contributed to the try being scored. If there is equal contribution they give it to more than 1 player. Aaron Wallace at fox sports stats knows his stuff so I gravitate towards them. Plus fox sports lab is a bit easier to interact with the data on a phone.

Do they count when a defending player assists the **opposition** in scoring a try?

Yes. Fox sports lab shows “try causes” stats. Unfortunately we had two “leaders” in that stat. Luciano led all NRL forwards with 14 try causes in 2021. Nofo was 2nd in the entire league with 28 try causes with only Enari Tuala from the knights outdoing him.

While on Luciano, the DT is reporting that Brandon Smith is likely to accept under 800k to join the Roosters. Meaning his official salary would be pretty much on par with Luciano.

I thought the storm offered him $800k. I'd be surprised if he left for less

Yes Lok, the Leilua double act was not a good Idea. Other than Teddy and Moses has there been another player who has been lured away for that kind of money, from the Tigers whilst on contract.

Jason T, has a chronic injury and will not play 80 any more, as he has years left on his "10 mil for 10 years" deal, Hess is unrecognisable as a player since making his origin debut, Gavin Cooper has gone.

Payten's has signed him(Luc) as an 80min "work rate" player his running game is a bonus. Payten is after a certain player to fit into a structure, he would have done his research on defence. I thought Luc was good for us in that role....If they offer Hess to we take him,

And if they use him correctly he will be a very expensive bench player compared to the potential cost of their two young gun 2nd rowers who will probably only cost half of LL contract but will be doing all the hard yards

If hes accepted unders he would stay at Melbourne.

Just means what we all know.

The roosters play they're players putside the salary cap.

This is more that busness and the Tigers need to get in the game.

im sure there are plenty of clubs willing to pay Smith more than 800K.
I heard a report on triple M (or SEN) last week that Brandon Smith was in Sydney and playing golf with two roosters players which made me laugh.

Agree, if they do get him for 2022 I wouldn't be surprised if they're looking to offload him by 2024 by stumping up $500k of his remaining contract

No where near worth 700k.

He's rumoured to have taken out the annual City Ford golf tournament. $30k per hole

Smith spent this week mingling with the Roosters including a day on the golf course with New Zealand teammate Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and a pair of retired Roosters — Jake Friend and Mitch Aubusson — on Wednesday.

Yep 120 off the stick which was good enough to get him home against Nic and all his cronies.

I'd suggest Luciano will be used differently to how he has been used at WTs. He always had the talent but you cannot make him something he is not. He will never be an 80min player but is a very effective attacking impact player from the interchange.

Oh hell.no on Hess. Slowest forward in the comp. Can't move laterally and one dimentional. They'd love to get rid off him yet don't want to get rid of their two no young prospects. There is the answer.
