My hope is that management are sandbagging an announcement about Utoikamanu till start of trials which should divert all the Brooks talk. His name gets easier to spell with practice and no I don't mean Brooks.

Many have tried and failed.

Lets look at Brooks:
When he first came with Voldemort, they became known as the Turnstyles. No defense and we were conceding tries in the middle.
What we have seen is Brooks up the ante in Defense, he has gotten a lot better.

Then Coach Voldemort punts Robbie Farah because he wants a hooker who will give good early ball to nr7. This never worked for us. It was said of Des Haslier that at the dogs he changed to adapt with the players strengths and we needed that. Well Coach Voldemort had one gameplan and one only punting Pat Richards who was playing the house down.

Brooks has had Sheens, Potter, Voldemort, Cleary, McGuire. On top of this Brett Kimmorley worked as a coaching assistant with us. All of them have tried different styles, many tried different hookers and it's the same.

Brooks is a great player, but poor halfback. He is a poor halfback because he won't organise or boss the team into position. Why? He isn't that guy! He is shy and humble. Maybe Johns can coach it into him, maybe not! We can't so stop putting the square peg into the round hole.

Hopefully Brooks gells with Hastings. Either they swap positions or Hastings steers the team from 5/8. It will take 5 rounds for us to see if this works or is a total failure, they will need time to Gel. It will also be hard because Madge is inflexible too and I am unsure how Brooks+Hastings+Madge will work together.

That said, by round 10 if Brooks and Hastings has't worked PUNT BROOKS. Let him go to the knights, England wherever. Our team needs structure.

The problem is not all Brooks but our team, we have had a mixture of bad coaching / average players and some bad luck

If Brooks had moved to a Roosters or Parramatta he would have been playing semis too.
I don't see people bagging Douhie he also has not played semis since leaving souths, or Tamou he was grand finalist captain to not making the semis.
We need to keep upgrading our squad we are doing that

I think he only won 2 premierships as well. Easily the best player I've ever seen. He could do it all.

Good lord what has happened to this place? I have lurked this forum for almost 20 years and I have never seen it so bad.

Was pretty excited to login and see 12 pages of new chat in the signing suggestions and rumours thread, thinking obviously some juicy transfer goss was underway. Instead it's 12 pages of an egotistical yelling contest about which judgemental perspective is the only possible opinion that anyone is allowed to contemplate. You aren't even debating you just keep stone wall repeating the same rhetoric over and over again.

Maybe we can start a "dick measuring" thread so you can all whip it out and fill these voids that you are so desperately trying to validate through these keyboard screaming matches. At least start a Luke Brooks, Jacob Liddle, Luciano thread and screech in there, let the rest of the forum members actually use the signings thread to get excited about potential squad development.

Yep agree …… sadly that’s the current state of affairs on this site. Most of value posters have baled.

Brooks would be a better player if he just played a supportive role.
If someone makes a break you would have Laurie and Brooks backing up on either side.
A bit like Billy Smith and Graham Langlands.
The recent stats showing Brooks as a poor defender but didn't reflect he played more games.
It does highlight our edge defenders are not up to scratch because there were some notable players on that list that had poor defense but don't come under the same scrutiny because their teams had a better points differential. Lucy is going, does that mean someone like Garner gets more game time this year?
Personally I think we need another gun backrower who can tackle and be involved in set plays.
I know I'm going to get smashed here, however, a player like Ryan Matteson would be perfect. He and Papa would be lethal.
Is there someone out there available like him.

Well said Cobes . Brooks is a running 5/8 & Hastings I think will organize & direct play & let Brooks run free. The edges in D have been woeful for the Tigers putting too much pressure on the defenders outside them. Some posters here forget Thurston hid in defence at outside center all his playing days. The club obviously recognize Brooks D is better than Thurstons.
Every half ever to play the game had at least one weakness on the field with one exception...The Great Andrew Johns.

I'm sure if given time I could come up with several good half backs that have had average success at club level.
One player that comes to mind is Shaun Johnson.
A great little player. Let's look at him for a sec:
With Warriors during the
**2012 -2017 seasons**
* failed to make first week play-offs in 146 games
* did win Rookie Of The Year and Golden Boot Award
* 3 different coaches, McClellan, Elliott, Kearney
* played for All Stars and New Zealand nation team 70% success rate.
He did play in the qual final in 2018 and knocked out in first week against Panffers. Can't really rate that.
Brooks, yes has played more games without success but he has some similarities to Johnson.
Knockers will say Johnson is a dud as well but his representative efforts are awesome and the rosters he played had flaws. He also scored over 1100pts.
Did ok going to the sharks under Morris but they were knocked out 2019 and 2021in first week.
I'd would have loved to have a player like him in our team.
IMO, the club as a whole has been a shambles since post 2005 grand final. The front office, disjointed roster - bad recruiting, coaching debacles, players jumping ship, players under performing.
Of course a playmaker is going to cop it. Comes with the salary.
Andrew Johns would not want him at Newcastle if he was a dud!
Whilst Brooks remains, support our team, look for the positives like our new additions and stop getting so stressed. Be happy! ?

Can we just get off brooks and get back on track, I am sick of hearing about him , he’s staying get over it .
Now it looks that there will be no swap deal to send LL to the cowboys and us get one one there young forwards as the season is only 7 weeks away . Real shame was hoping this would happen , UNLESS someone has any update on the matter .

No, she wouldn't leave me, im actually successful. I wouldn't and don't rate any 7 who has played 170 games and is yet to play in a Semi.

And what we all generally know that label to mean ? No it doesn’t . But the guy earns 800k because the market dictates he earns it . I guarantee you , that if the knights could take brooks right now at full freight they would have done it yesterday . Same for the raiders , bulldogs , cowboys , and arguably the sharks. the Rabbits and Warriors are going with the youth and Johnston , for what that’s worth , and the dragons are stuck with hunt , and now Mbye .

But you all see Brooks -800k NOT WORTH IT . Based on what metric ? He’d probably get more if he was on the open market . It’s the same reason houses went through the roof . Lack of supply in key suburbs. Is that shack down the road worth 700k ? Perfect world , no way ! But it is because someone is willing to pay it . It’s our perspective that’s failed to move not the value .

Everyone whose left this club has gone on to play finals. Tedesco, Moses, Woods, Matterson, Aloiai etc. There’s no reason to believe Brooks wouldn’t either. The club has been toxic to players careers.

In case you haven’t heard Jesse Bromwich is now going to Dolphins so I reckon 2 things will happen 1. His brother will follow him (possibly) and 2. I expect Melbourne to target Stefano to replace him unless we can resign him before he goes to market

The problem with brooks being on $800k-$850k is that the salary cap is what, a bit over 9 million after it got reduced for this year?

Sure there aren't many elite halfbacks around but we are paying him elite player money and he simply isn't one. Percentage wise he's taking up way more of the cap than he should be, they extended him after one good season and he hasn't played that good since unfortunately

I’ve said this a billion times but it just gets washed away with “Brooks lovers” or being called happy clappers , the guy is not elite . And I’ve never seen anyone say he was . The guy is average to above average . That equates to a certain percentage of the cap , as you suggested . Now take into account his age , still relatively young , experience, and most importantly the toilet paper level hole in halves market , then you get him on 800k. Is that fair value in 2018 ? No way ! But in 2022 it is fair value. No one wants to hear it though , because it means we are stuck in purgatory of 8th-11th again .
There’s such a shortage we have talked ourselves into Hastings as the saviour lol . Think about that for a second ? 2005 had every team with a player in thier spine who could have played origin at a pinch that year , how many teams can we honestly say that about ? This is the issue . And will remain the issue once brooks is long gone . The way we coach at juniors has to , and I believe is , changing. But that’s going to take time . Until then we have to watch Brooks , Townsend , Get 800k .
