Edene Gebbie is on a development contract with West Tigers. The PNG Hunters coach Matt Church confirmed that Gebbie is not among the Hunters contingent to relocate to Queensland to participate in the Intrust Super Cup competition.

Church confirmed he is in contact with West Tigers officials to see how can he assist in Gebbie's fitness during the transition.

This should be a welcoming news for Tigers fans who have been advocating for Gebbie's inclusion in our 2021 roster. He gives a lot of options in the backline (fullback, wing & center).

I think it's train and trial not development yet and I did tell him it's Wests..

He will be here for 2021.

Yeah starting on a Train and trial contract, looking at a development contract for 21.

The guy’s 25 and will be 26 for God’s sake. If he gets a development contract it makes a mockery of the concept and just takes up another opportunity for somebody younger. If he was going to develop he should have done it by now.

I understand what you're saying but he could provide us with a lot of back line depth at a minimal cost.

The fact is that a lot of those head hunter guys are tough as and can probably provide a longer playing life if they don't have any really serious injuries.

I don't think that age is as big a factor with those guys and there are always late developers, look at guys like Cody Walker who didn't have an NRL debut until he was 25 or 26.

I’m not a hundred percent sure, but I don’t think they have head hunters operating anymore, do they??

For me the priorities would be Harry Grant, Angus Crichton, JAC in that order

2021 would be a bonus for any of these but not impossible, these things move in mysterious ways and I feel we are still holding a fair chunk of spare cap, up to $900k (assumes Seyfarth signed) and we have some flexibility on Garner and Liddle who are likely on around $300k each

Dare to dream but that would make one a definite possibility for 2021 if they became available but harder to see how you do two of them
Two base replacements would leave $1.25-1.3m for AC & say HG, might not be impossible on a multi year deal

Add in $0.5m from JRey and this is definitely possible. I’d say goodbye to Liddle & Garner and hello to Harry & Angus
.... and yes I do realise both are under contract but seems to be possibilities on both
Do that and it’s officially the greatest offseason in West’s Tigers history

Not a very considered post, is it? Harry’s a long-term game and with how we’re rolling at present I’d much rather leave things be - with him retaining a unanimously positive image of us

In fact, Curly, not to be rude but leave it to the big boys and maybe not reply to yourself?

IMHO, Crichton is realistic and could prove a good target but having personal experience with him I’d say we aren’t a club on HIS radar. Sironen to return would make much more sense.

You’re a charmer @TieDye
Have fun playing with your big boys you jerk

I have no doubt he is an exciting prospect in attack and I hope he goes well for us, I really do. However, he has been around a bit & his tackling stats appear to be very average (50%). Here we are bemoaning Nofa’s defence but then we are going out and signing an older player who is an unproven attacking player at NRL level notwithstanding his QLD Cup highlights look promising. If you struggle to tackle by the time you’re 25 then in my opinion no development contract in the world is going to fix that. I don’t know but maybe that is why he hasn’t played first grade yet.

I’m very happy we will see him train and trial to see if he can be the full package but not exactly thrilled we ignore a chance for our younger players who would benefit better from development.

Gebbie has the fundamental tools now but just needs the polish. He has the natural strength of a PNG national but comes with genuine pace and is reasonably tall. I would hope he is top 30 by start of season with the likely changes to the squad. If he can come on quickly and at a reasonable cost, he'll offer us the same quality as Justin Olam but faster.

I agree with Thaiger that he should move to Top 30 asap to provide an opportunity for one of our younger players in the development squad.

Hes played mainly fullback. Most fullbacks have a tackling percentage of 50-70%. Tackling one on one is difficult when they make a break. He will be good depth for sure.

Justin Olam took time to develop too. He’s 26 and just had his breakout year. With the limited training over there it takes these guys longer to adjust to NRL, but being with Souths already Gebbie shouldn’t take much longer

70% not 50%! I think you might want to check those stats.

Anyway, let’s hope he works out. Speed certainly helps.

Very curious what our cap is looking like at the moment.

From my understanding we are not paying any of Aloiai’s salary and actually got payment for the release as well.

JO is near 500k a season, but broncos are chipping in next two years, i think with the freedom of Aloiai’s docket we’re only out 50k and 100k in 22.

Roberts was cheap

Not sure what was given Laurie but doubt it was much and his still not even in the books for next year, if he is with the swap from Cini I see that hopefully equating for it self?

We signed Tamou but that was a while ago now, same with stefano. We had enough to throw it at JAC but that didnt pan thru and hasnt gone to anyone else yet. And now Reynolds is freeing up close to 500k, I feel like we got much more than we know for 2021 but might not have anyone to spend it on until someone comes on the market. Is there a Marquee signing anyone would be interested in? Or are we maybe just keen to see how things go for the time being

I am surprised the PNG women have not been raided for the female game. The ladies usually carry these huge baskets on their heads filled with coconuts from the North Coast up into the Owen Stanley Range. I remember a group of them passing us just pass the choko patch near the old village of Isurava. It was during the first day of the trip to the current Isurava village and many of the blokes were out on their feet some complaining of being tired. Most of these blokes had their packs portered for them which provides income for the locals. They quickly shut their mouths when they viewed the ladies. I admired them immensely with their aerobic fitness, strength and fortitude.

Development contracts are a double edged sword in that it guarantees a top 30 position in future years.

The NRL is also reducing the number of development contracts to 4 for each club but it will be grandfathered so if we have Gebbie on a contract before the announcement his contract will be honoured so won't really coast any younger guy an opportunity.

Club will be hoping someone good pops up. Happens almost every year to be fair, always one guy who tries to find a new club

Tedesco and I hate him. JAC and I think he is a muppet. Latrell would be good as well.

I'd like us to get an elite lock/right edge forward player such as Crichton or Cameron Murray. Hopefully Blore takes one of those spots this season. That would give us a quality back row.

I reckon you wait and see what happens in the backs. We have a fair few players to choose from and hopefully a couple work out. Laurie, Roberts, BJ, Talau, AJ and some of the juniors coming through.

It also depends on how Liddle/Simpkin come on next season as well. Grant is great but I'm not sure we should throw the dollars at him until we see how these two go.

Then Brooks and Douiehi. The question is are they going to make it in the halves ? I feel confident with Douiehi. I reckon Brooks needs a good season. You'd have to be looking at filling this role with quality juniors.
