Mbye injury free is our starting fullback I reckon. If Laurie comes this year and proves to be the prodigy he’s being made out to be then great - but he’s got to earn the right. Personally I’m really pleased to hear Mbye is so determined.

If Laurie was to get starting fullback spot it would probably be a month or two into the season I think. I think he’s at the point where he won’t develop much more in reggies though needs first grade time

People forget how much the fullback is responsible for organising the defensive line. Hard for a newbie to do straight away.

I would argue that fullback is the most important defensive position on the field but not only to make the odd tackle

Whenever players talk about billy slater they always mention he was like a defensive coach on the field, he was the best at organising defense....and kicking people in the head

Billy Slater said Mbye was great at organising the defence...

He is . Our line was strong when he was at the back. We were let down by guys , missing their man , in 1v1 ,2v1 situations . It’s why we were all furious at benji , Garner , and BJ. A lot of the defensive errors , weren’t positional , they were simple not making the tackle .

One of the worst tackelers i have seen.front on he never commits.

Who?

Mbye.

I swear some people must not watch the games.

I think the game some of those people were watching was the one against Souths when Reece Hoffman debuted on the wing.

Normally a good defender, Mbye, rushed up at least 2 or 3 times to try and shut Souths right hand side down.

This was something he normally would not do and whether he did not have faith in Reece Hoffman or whatever the reason, all he did was create an overlap and create even more problems for the young bloke.

I hope he didn't destroy the young player's confidence, but it was his first and last appearance in the top grade.

Can only put it down to a brain snap by Mbye who I would normally regard as a pretty good defender.

One game doesn't make someone a poor defender, I honestly think he was trying to protect the young guy but went the wrong way about it. Mbye was terrible that game.

M'Bye made Hoffman look far worse than he is and quite likely destroyed the young blokes confidence.M'Bye is not normaly as bad as that in defence

That would be awesome. I must admit I was assuming his early arrival would be no chance but now there is hope. Nicolussi is usually quite accurate when it comes to Tigers.

Does anyone know anything about Laurie?
He has had very limited FG exposure, is he worth the hype?
The club think so, so I will trust there opinion. But.......

Apparently his sprint times compared to Charlie Staines at training last off season, and Staines is a known speedster.

Apart from that, he’s only had the 1 FG off the bench where he didn’t really look out of place.

I asked my mate who’s a die hard Panthers supporter, and he said he’ll definitely be an above average fullback / 5/8 in NRL but it’s too early to say if he’ll be an out and out super star

Laurie also started at fullback in the final round to last season and went okay.

The fact that that Souths game is the only game that stands out, shows that mybe is a good defender.
He was terrible that game, but can think of many more games where Garner, Moses, BJ, defended just as bad.

Full article re DL possibly being released to the Tigers as early as next week

“James Tamou has welcomed the chance to captain the Wests Tigers and what now looks certain to be the arrival of former Panthers teammate Daine Laurie before the season kick-off.

On the same day the Tigers nailed down the signature of David Nofoaluma for a further four seasons, Laurie made it clear to Penrith he wants to join the Tigers immediately where he is expected to pull on the No. 1 jersey.

Already signed at the Tigers for the 2022 season, Laurie has stepped up his quest to leave the foot of the mountains - and Tamou said fans should get excited if the fullback's wish was granted, which could be was early as next week.

Penrith initially had no interest in releasing Laurie given he is a valuable back-up fullback and costs the club nothing in their salary cap. After developing him the last few years, Penrith believed they were entitled to some sort of return. They also have several spots to fill in their roster.

But the Panthers and Tigers have been in regular dialogue and are committed to getting the best outcome for both clubs.

"Daine is more than ready, he showed last year he was ready when he debuted,'' Tamou told the Herald. "I hate bringing up last year because I'm, a Tiger now, but Daine used to throw himself into everything and was such a competitor.

Daine Laurie is keen to quit Penrith and link with the Wests Tigers early.

"If he was in the second team, their game day was always going up against the first team and getting them ready to play. He stood out because he wanted to compete, and that's something we want here - players to compete on every play and to make your own luck. He's always competing and deceptively fast and strong.''

Adam Doueihi was tried as fullback last year but has made the move to No. 6, while Laurie's arrival would also give coach Michael Maguire the chance to utilise Moses Mbye as a utility.

'I got a bit emotional': Nofoaluma can't hide joy at new Tigers deal
The Tigers' captaincy is yet to be announced, but Tamou, last year's Penrith skipper, has plenty of support internally to take over from Mbye - and the prop spoke about the joy he gets from leading his teammates into battle. His speech after the Panthers' grand final loss has not been forgotten by key figures at the joint venture.

"Coming into a new side is always hard and you have to earn their trust first,'' Tamou said. "I've told 'Madge' [Maguire] there are some good leaders here, I'll go with the flow and see where he goes with it.

"I'd be more than happy to do it. Being a leader has made me accountable for my own game - it's something I enjoy and it's a challenge I enjoy.

"It's one of those things where you fall in love with the team, you fall in love with the boys, you want to take the first hit-up for the team, and you want to lead them.

"Once upon a time I was a player who only concentrated on how I played. Now I want the team to do well and win, and I don't care if I'm on the field or off it. That's just maturity.''

While Tamou rated Joe Ofahengaue as a standout in the gym, he found it impossible to not single out praise for fellow front-rower Zane Musgrove.

"He's a big man and he loves the physicality,'' Tamou said. "He loves the game and the boys, he wants to do his part for the team, and that rubs off on the team.''

Meanwhile, the New York Yankees hitting coach Rachel Balkovec, who is is town working with the Sydney Blue Sox, visited Tigers training where she was keen to meet Maguire after learning about his tough no-nonsense approach to coaching.”

Lol - that last paragraph has to be a gee up surely. Why and how on earth would the Yankees hitting coach have even heard of Madge. If true i'm sure she would have been impressed with the wonderful training facilities at Concord. They would run a very close second to the Yankees facilities.

It could actually happen quite easily. I’m not aware of what Madge has done but I know many NRL and elite sporting coaches travel to UK, USA etc to learn off other coaches/set ups/systems. It would be a small world really. Word would get around. Maguire is a proven coach. Why wouldn’t someone want to pick his brains?

well i certainly wouldn't be picking the brains of the coach who got his team to move from 9th to 11th.

Mbye off the bench balances the whole squad...

He can cover
1
3
4
6
7
9

He is not great at any of them, but he is a near perfect utility at 14.

Mate, you should see Mbye at training. Maybe he always trains like this, maybe he's finally injury free but he looks like he's desperate for a starting job. He is flying.

Who?

Mbye.

Mbye is one of our best defenders in the backline.

I think he is our best defender in the backline. Brooks or Mbye. No one else comes close.

Brooks is the best defensive half in the comp. His defensive stats are similar if not better than origin halfback Cleary, in a much lesser side.

The only dislikes I have about Mbop is his price tag and the fact hes played well below it. He's performed more like a 350k player.
Also, he seems too nonchalant for Cpt.
That, plus he had zero confidence in catching a bomb last year, but if he gets that sorted he's a solid player and will do at F/B until we have a better option available.

Quality, Twal has a cedar tree on the front of his budgies.

And a date palm on the back....

My son's sprint coach has worked with a lot of NRL players/clubs over the years (most recently Manly and before that Bulldogs as he gets on well with Hasler) - he said when he worked at the Bulldogs Mbye was deceptively quick and moved across the ground very well.

He was touted as the next big thing by Canterbury when he was coming through their ranks, but he has never lived up to all the hype and in the end I think they were glad to let him go. We obviously saw something in him as well (or at least Ivan did), but once again, a very inconsistent player with the odd good game per season.

I don’t know if it’s laziness or he is just happy to go through his career riding on his big pay cheques or what, but he seems to mostly play games in cruise control mode. It’s very frustrating considering the underlying talent he does apparently have.

Bulldogs thought that they had another Thurston and were not going to let him leave like JT.

That’s why the offered Mbye such a huge contract, oh how wrong were they, there were champagne corks popping for weeks after we took him off their hands.

Always get the impression hes not giving 110%...coasting

No disrespect but your perception comes from the grandstand or lounge room. Maguire is next to him every minute of the day and made him captain. From this I can only conclude that the general fan perception is very wrong

Not much in that article makes me think it’s a sure thing that we’re getting him anytime soon

Nicolussi pretty on the money usually with Tigers stuff.

I'm 3 from 3 in the rumour mill and I'll be 4 from 4 after Laurie starts training with us after next week. It's a done deal, the sticking point Cini but now resolved. Pemriff wanted a trade deal for Simpkins and were prepared to pay plenty so that's probably a good sign too.

Which Simpkins? The dummy half?

I

Yep, Hooker Simpkins

And we said yes? Surely we aren’t getting rid of him?

No, we didn;t say yes but he was the player they wanted.

Madge still has big plans for simpkins I hope?

He'll be our long term 9.

That’s why I can’t understand Madge’s fascination with Cam McInnes.
While we have Simpkin and Liddle

We need consistency in the 9 jumper until liddle or Simpkin can prove they can play at least 60 mins as a starting hooker cam will be there and once one of them are ready he will
Move to lock

We have a facination for buying locks and 2nd rowers. We have Blore and a few others that may be good in this position. This is a different side then 2019, and with that extra year and different coaching and develoment staff . Maybe Cheese an Mac Guinness may be the way to go,but i'm confident these young guys will have a big year.

We are short a genuine lock at the moment. Twal needs to be part of the prop rotation. Maybe that’s where Madge sees/needs one of them to develop.

For the money we paid Nofa we could of picked up a decent lock
