Throw the cheque book at Nicho Hynes ,he is what Tigers need and even play him at centre

Absolutely.

1m for 3 years is beyond reasonable

We should offer him 500k/Season to play centre.
He's a star.

Fatty said broncos have offered him 600k a year for 3 years to play fb. He’s not worth that much to play centre for us. Our biggest problem is playing people out of position. Example Talau on the wing. Hynes would not be effective at centre. Spend that 5-600k on a gun centre or winger who actually plays the position we need him for. I reckon management will keep either Joey or jet if it’s a cheap contract. We got gildart coming over so I doubt we buy anymore backs with the amount of young outside backs we have. Which means we can go hard at big ball playing lock and spend money on him, the rest will go to extending and upgrading contracts. Plus a few more astute signings. Hopefully another backrower.

Gildart is unproven and untested.
Might be a flop.

Other backs on the roster are extremely poor.

Agree about gildart, as for our young players they have all played less than 20 games! Talau, Aj, Hoffman, Cooper and maybe even cini. These guys need to play otherwise we lose them and watch them excel elsewhere! We gotta back our young talent and let them grow. They don’t do that by playing reserve grade all year. They are passed that. Best teams have young talent mixed with great players, we can buy that one **great outside back, nofa has that second spot** and laurie has Fb. which leaves 2 spots for our young talent to try and grab a spot in. I reckon we loose 1 or 2 of the young outside backs in the next 6-12months regardless.

Come on
You suggesting Nofa is Great
He is OK at best
One good game every now and then doesn't make him great
But he is better then Talau Roberts Bj and Kepaoa
Not sure that means to much though

Anyone have much opinion on the following backs:
Greg Marzhew
Will Penisini (under contract until 2023)
Dean Ieremia
Billy Smith (2 season ending injuries but the roosters sure seem to rate him)

I don't see us grabbing any superstar centre/wing and it's probably not the right place to throw the cash at. If we want someone with a bit more experience:
Matt Ikuvalu (doubt roosters will let him go if Morris is done, but he sure knows how to find the line)
Philip Sami (rocks and diamonds but geez he has some speed to burn)

Teddy had 2 season ending injuries at the start of his career, and Im pretty sure either Benji or Prince had similar as well.

They all turned out pretty good.

Money won't make us smart though.

Sounds like Nofo but with speed.

For the right money, i like Duffy, maybe because he can create and score tries, which nobody in our backline has the ability to do . Suspect in defence ? Well our whole backline suffers from this disease. Better then Laurie? Yes at this stage! A good buy? ???

It doesnt matter he cant defend because our whole team cant defend?

Would be an average centre at best. He is a 1 or 6 only. He is a very good player, his strengths are footwork and passing game. His strengths are not size, speed and defence.

Raiders eye Hynes as Tigers close in on Gildart

Canberra are weighing up whether to join the race for Melbourne’s rising star Nicho Hynes after the club outlined the frustrations that led to the sudden axing of English halfback George Williams.

The likely return of Williams to Wigan is expected to coincide with confirmation that England Test centre Oliver Gildart is heading to the NRL to join Wests Tigers next year but the Super League has ruled out releasing him or teammate Jackson Hastings for the remainder of this season.

With Canberra’s finals hopes fading after just one win in their past seven matches, the Raiders are also looking beyond this season in the search for a replacement playmaker and Hynes has emerged as a possible target.

The 24-year-old is currently starring for the Storm at fullback in place of the injured Ryan Papenhuyzen but he has played most of his 65 matches in the Queensland Cup at five-eighth and has also spent time at halfback.

Shaun Johnson, Ash Taylor, Anthony Milford and Corey Norman are more experienced options off contract at the end of the season but the prospect of Hynes partnering Jack Wighton in the halves is likely to have more appeal in Canberra.

After losing the 2019 grand final to the Roosters in controversial circumstances and making last year's preliminary final, the Raiders have suffered a dramatic fall from grace and face big calls on the futures of off-contract veterans Iosia Soliola, Dunamis Lui and Jordan Rapana, as well as England hooker Josh Hodgson.

Hodgson, who has been linked with Brisbane, recently quit as co-captain and has been outspoken over the exit of Williams, while indicating he may not be keen to remain in Canberra if he wasn’t in the starting side after being selected on the interchange for the past two matches.

After the Raiders announced on Tuesday that Williams had been granted an immediate release, the English international tweeted that he had been “kicked out the door”.

However, Canberra officials responded on Thursday by detailing how after having a request for a release at the end of the season rejected on Monday night, Williams had advised that he couldn’t train on Tuesday and may not be available for Saturday night’s match against on Sydney Roosters.

The Raiders had received numerous requests from Williams for a release at the end of the season to return home with his pregnant partner but were putting in place measures to support them, including an offer for them to spend an extended off-season in England with family.

"George’s final request for a release came on Monday evening. The following day George withdrew from training and the upcoming match against the Roosters,” a statement said.

“This decision prompted the club to offer George an immediate release given the stress this was evidently causing he and his partner, thereby giving them the opportunity to return home earlier.

“As a club, we have a duty to act in the best interests of the club, its members, sponsors and supporters. Sometimes the best interests of the club do not match those of an individual.

“The club therefore determined that granting George an immediate release would allow us to plan better for the club’s future.

“We would like to reiterate that it was the club’s overwhelming preference to keep George until the end of next season, as he is a good person, well-liked and a valuable member of our club.

“However, when this situation became untenable, we needed to act in the best interests of the club and our future.”

Wigan coach Adrian Lam has confirmed the Super League club are in talks to sign Williams.

Warrington and Leeds are also thought to be keen on the 26-year-old but Wigan having first refusal on his services as a condition of his release to join Canberra last year.

Wigan also have space in their salary cap after releasing George Burgess and will be permitted to include just £75,000 of Williams’ contract in the salary cap because he is a product of the club.

As a result, Wigan are under no pressure to release any player to accommodate Williams and it is understood they have already advised the Tigers that Hastings will see out the season in England.

The former Roosters and Manly halfback has signed with the Tigers for next season and a deal for Gildart to join him is believed to be close to being finalised.

I’d say BJ is gonski for next year

How about we talk about signing players in positions we need? Any centres or wingers around?

We might be the only team who will greatly improve by signing outside backs ? second rower would be nice too

Because we won't fix the problems we have just by looking at who might be the best single position upgrades in isolation. The team as a whole has some pretty fundamental problems that are not going to be fixed by just putting a better centre or winger in place. We need more opportunities created for our outside backs. We need someone to take charge in the opposition 20 and in crunch times. We need someone to help coordinate our defense and get numbers where they need to be.

I think Hynes can help to improve us in all of those areas. Given the particular deficiencies that we have in the rest of the spine, I think he would be a big upgrade to **this** team. In other teams that have a dominant half or have very good defensive structures the situation would be quite different and Hynes may offer little over Laurie, but we have neither of those things...

I agree, but if you can get a good centre or winger then you take them when available
You are correct about us not having a half take control of the team, but you fix one piece at a time, and hopefully the improvement comes

But he doesn't want to play Centre.

Preferred position is 1 or halves.

unless there is a reason, such as "development" mentioned when we try to entice him here.

But really, who would be the person to talk him into coming?

The person I think of is Benji, but obvious reasons - he isn't here, but even then.. from reports it seems he says to people to follow the money for his career.

They are players in demand so basically we have no chance.
