Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

We will only sign players for next year similar to who came in this year. Young guys or journeymen. I had hoped that we would improve this year but after 3 games I knew we were a rabble again.

I thought Tamou was a decent buy for the money - wrong. He has been awful.

Same for JTJ - cheap and IF he could recapture something? Wrong again.

BJ said all the right things in preseason - he’s worse than last year.

I thought Blore would have a good year. Injured before game one and has showed little since.

Noffa - what can you say? Back on easy street for 4 years.

Laurie - he has been wonderful. Very gifted. One of the very few.

Talau - up and down, up and down.

Mbye - nuff said

Brooks has been doing ok.

Joffa - hot and cold but better than most of our forwards.

Twal - same ol, same ol.

Garner - average, bog average.

Douehi - started ok at 5/8 then got worse. Put in centres did ok then got worse. Back at 5/8 good game again. Let’s see if he stays consistent now.

Liddle - started ok but average now

J Simpkin - did ok I thought but rested and not seen again.

Tuki - one game but did enough. Fingers crossed.

Seyfarth - doing ok. Has a good dig.

I can only see similar signings for the next few years. This system where you sign 6 or 7 players and hope one turns out exceptional.

Daine Laurie is this years exceptional one.

To me that reads as simple as … we are young and inconsistent .

From the telegraph:

The Wests Tigers have lodged an 11th hour bid to sign the game’s hottest property Dale Finucane.

The Tigers have entered the race as it can also be revealed the Knights have ended their pursuit of the Storm and NSW Origin forward.

The 29-year-old’s current club, the Melbourne Storm, are also resigned to the fact that he will be departing the club at the end of this season.

It leaves the Tigers, Sharks, Dragons, Cowboys and Titans locked-in a multi-million dollar scrap for his signature.

All five clubs are believed to have tabled a three-year contract — but Finucane’s management have been pushing hard for an extra year to seal the deal.

Given the physical nature of the way Finucane has played the game and a recent history of calf problems, the majority of the suitors have been reluctant to go beyond a third year.

Regardless, Finucane’s new deal is expected to be in the vicinity of $2 million dollars - a healthy pay-day for a player who is widely respected for his leadership, work-ethic and cultural standards.

It’s understood the Tigers stepped up their bid to sign Finucane after missing out on Tevita Pangai Jr, who is on the move from the Broncos to Canterbury.

It could throw a late curve-ball to the drawn-out negotiations which was expected to be resolved this weekend after he went through the bids with his agent Andrew Purcell on Friday.

Very, very interesting.

Let me guess how this plays out....
Saints sign Finucane after an agonisingly close, toss of the coin decision between similar, fantastic, multi-million dollar offers from the Sharks, Titans and Cowboys.
Tigers miss out.
Again.

As footballers alone (not counting off field issues), I'd have JDB over Finucane. JDB just controls the ruck with his defence and has a good offload.

Would he leave the coast though ? He’s pretty entrenched in the community down here . It’s a long way to concord .Plus the whole rape stuff is pretty on the nose . Whether it’s true or not , unfortunately everybody is guilty in the court of social media outrage .

With the Dragons wanting Mbye, a swap seems a logical step. Mick Cronin use to travel from Gerringong to Parramatta to train and play,

Dragons will play hard ball, they're already saying if they don't get him this year they won't sign him at all. They can just refuse a swap knowing we will get stuck with him next year if we can't make a deal, not sure how desperate they are for Mbye

The coach at the Dragons doesn't seem the type to stand for nonsense. The other big plus with De Belin, he has had two years off football. His body is in better shape than Finucanes. Some may have strong views to the contrary but we need to take all our opportunities to strengthen the roster.

Yep. Nearly every other club has criminals or genuinely seedy blokes representing it. Do I like Dr Belin, no. Do I want our club to have success, bloody oath. If blokes can play we need to try and recruit them, as long as they are the sort of player who has a dig every week. The overpaid lazy players who always look for the easy way out are the ones we need to avoid at all costs. For example Milford. JDB would be a great on-field acquisition.

sorry mate, but I can't agree on this one. Jack De Belin is the last person I would want at this club and that includes Matt Lodge. he was never proven innocent and regardless of whether or not he was guilty, he cheated on his pregnant wife with an 18 year old he met at the Santa pub crawl one day at North gong. he's a gronk.

I understanding JDB is a polarising individual. His partner seems to have forgiven him. I don't know enough about the other to comment other than to write his behaviour towards his partner is inconsistent with my moral values.

I really don't know why WT don't hand-deliver Mbye to Saints door immediately. He is no use to us for the rest of this season, he isn't going to be the reason we sneak into the 8 or miss out. It is the only way of getting him off our books for decent remuneration for '22. It needs to happen.

Just a guess, but we have a lot of dollars, without Mbye leaving. Not much around to buy for next year, so maybe better to wait for his 2022 contract to expire, leaving us $900,000 to sign a quality player next year for 2023 ?

It all depends on how much dragons will pay I guess - no point of letting him go if dragons won't pay half his contract. If they do then I'll drive him there myself

IMO it doesn't matter how much the Dragons will chip in for this season, there are only 7 or so games left. So we aren't going to get much $$ off them anyhow. If we don't offload him now, even for free, we are stuck in the dunny with Mbye and his $800 grand pension next season. What an absolute waste of money that will be.

No worries mate, I'm 100% with you as far as my morals go. He is a knobhead. But look at nearly every other club, most turn a blind eye to dodgy characters and recruit them to further their on-field chances. Tetevano, Ferguson, Pearce, May, Lodge, TPJ etc etc.

Some may have strong views to the contrary but we need to take all our opportunities to strengthen the roster.

sorry mate, but I can't agree on this one. Jack De Belin is the last person I would want at this club and that includes Matt Lodge. he was never proven innocent and regardless of whether or not he was guilty, he cheated on his pregnant wife with an 18 year old he met at the Santa pub crawl one day at North gong. he's a gronk.

In this country, you don't have to prove innocence, you need to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

As for the other stuff, that's between his family and himself. Certainly nothing to do with you or me.

Glasshouses.

Get the cheque book out for Harry Grant!

We’re gonna have a cash flexibility of nearly 2.5 mil if Mbye leaves…. free to talk to clubs November 1st

Grant was idolised and closed to worshipped at the Tigers by us fans, goes back to Melbourne and even when he was fit he was benched… I remember one game he was named to start then a late change brought him to the bench, Brandon Smith seems to be very very close to the boys at Melbourne and they’re a culture based team

If we throw 1mil a year at him (I’d do it in a heartbeat) for like 5 years and just be aggressive…. Melbourne would be forced to match it or get close and with a fall back option of Brandon Smith they may be inclined to not go with us and may just choose to retain Smith on less

Grant will be the best 9 in this game for the next decade or so and would be worth every penny, we’ve had Mbye on 900k…. I think Grant at 1mil would be a major upgrade

Dogs and Dragons have drained themselves out of the race, and I can’t see any other teams with cap space that could go with us in terms of matching the deal…. All these players signing with rivals may be a blessing in disguise as they have no more cap space left

Then from Grant we can start building our team and it will help our chances of acquiring other stars as we’ll still have a lot of money left, in addition to the junior pathways this club has and the solid young core also

Come back Grant and be the man to lead this young side to the finals as our future captain!

Why keep him on the books for '22 and have to pay him his huge salary that we get basically no value for money out of? Get rid of him immediately and then we have his '22 money in our bank for next season. Who knows what player might suddenly become available in that time?

OK, we have Hastings, and Gildart coming. We have Packer @$900.000, going, Joey Lei,going $$$$-? Reynolds money ?
So we have big $ for next year, and no one to spend it on.
Do we need Mbyes money for next year ?
Then we look at the players that also may be moved on,--Walters-- JTJ--- TT--- ZINI---KEI----CHEE KAM--- HOFFMAN and more. Paying Mbyes contract out gives us an extra $400,000 that we will find hard to spend, even allowing we will have to upgrade some players. We may need his money for 2023, is what i'm getting at.

Fact of the matter is no one wants to come here.
We have an opportunity to develop our own guys now, cut some dead wood and have cash in the bank. Don’t buy players for the sake of buying players.

I'm still not convinced that very good players atttact other very good players, i believe it's mainly about the money/length of contract, for many years, we had arguably one of the most popular and entertaining player (B Marshall)with skills rarely seen before (please see some of his highlights) but during this players presence in the team there were still not any or many good signings, so i don't believe good signings would attract other good signings.

Doesn't work that way as he has a contract.
If he doesn't go elsewhere we pay his full salary.

Now it becomes a balancing act

But we should be able to make irresistible offers to players of the calibre of Laurie and Stefano. We need fast fast backs and some good second row forwards. There is absolutely no excuse for not recruiting three or four of these players into WTs.

Problem is you can’t keep cash in the bank.
Have to spend your cap.

That's what I said. If he doesn't go anywhere we are stuck with him and his ridiculous salary. If it costs us 500 grand to get rid of him, do it. We aren't getting any value out of him anyway, cut him loose to the Dragons now, whatever the cost IMO.
