What's sad is LL is perceived as our greatest attacking threat but he's also our greatest defensive liability. For one try yesterday they had 5 on 3 from the play the ball and LL (and Talau) jammed in leaving Nofo with 3 on 1 (and Nofo will be blamed).

We lost it through bad reads, lazy play and poor one-on-one defence in the middle. The young kids deserve a go but they're not fit enough, strong enough, fast enough or smart enough to carry the portion of the game they're in. The Sharks' speed through the ruck made us look like kids playing men (which we were during the forward rotation).

Walters, Simpkin, Simpkins and Tuilagi were out of their depth but we didn't have a lot of options and will require patience to turn them into first graders.

I'm concerned with Simpkin at hooker, his service needs a lot of work and when he runs it appears to be without a notion of what he's going to do. Brailey gave him a master class yesterday.

I thought Amone had a real go.

What's hilarious about this is that all the Madge bashers constantly bleat about him not giving the young guys a go and when he does, and you get a result like this, it's all his fault for giving all the young blokes a go. We were never going to the finals this season and anyone who is disappointed about that needs a reality check. We'll be in contention next year and hopefully for a few years after that. If not, then I'll join the Madge bashers...

Well did he really need to select Walters????
Would of rather been Jock Madden get a run if Available and assume he should be?

I think we are to hard on Walters...he is a reserve grader,thats his ability.we have a lot of injuries and players on the sideline,Madden will get his chance,but yesterday Madge needed a backup hooker,Billy has done the job before,also remember he hasnt played for ages either....just goes to show how poor our depth is atm...

It was the wrong selection with the way he played....

some here put there head in the sand when we miss signings " oh but they were never offered a contract etc"
fact is Thompson joins a long list of players we have put an offer to and have been REJECTED
in relation to Thompson it is not the end of the world that we missed him, we can upgrade Stef and maybe we look at Woods if we can move on tamau

It's a highly sensitive topic on this forum. The squaddies rush in to defend Maguire and apportion blame to other factors.

All future backline signings should have to pass a speed test before being signed- no fast no contract. Sick of seeing average players run rings around us. Metcalfe , Kennedy ,Trimble ,Tracey probably won't get a start next year.

These guys would get rid of crap players in a minute. They attract good players. They have years of good defensive systems behind them.

If a Bellamy, a Bennett or a Robinson can’t get us firing then shut us down.

It is obvious the Dogs salary cap is under a lot of pressure. What annoys me is, they out bid us for players, but they are actually over the cap at that time, until someone who is contracted, agrees to move on.

No he’s not wrong. We haven’t been able to attract players since Sheens left and that is because we have a reputation of being unprofessional and down the bottom of the ladder.

Anyone that thinks signing another coach will fix this problem is dreaming.

Depends on the coach... players would make the move if it was Bennett.

We currently have Stef, Blore, AD and one or two others who might make 'the leap' to being top level players.

I see a lot of people on here talk about Laurie also. I like Laurie, but he is probably the 12th to 14th best fullback in the NRL. Kennedy at the Sharks is better than him, and no one here is raving about Kennedy being a player you can build around.

IOW we have maybe 4 or 5 guys who may end being very good. The Broncs have had that amount for two years and finished bottom 2 each time. In other words, it is nowhere near enough.

They have Haas...an absolute stud...and a few who are maybe a year or two ahead of us...and their results show that type of talent is nowhere near enough. They will go past us with Reynolds steering them around.

We simply have to land 3-4 marquee players / leaders.

Or expect to finish bottom for the next few seasons as Stef / Blore / AD core can't be expected to carry a club.

Some people are in complete denial about the state of things at the club. We let in 50 points yesterday against a Sharks team with $3m sitting on the sidelines and a halves pairing that had never played before. Madge was out coached by a caretaker coach.

On top of that we can’t sign anyone who is a legitimate starter at another NRL club (we plucked Ken out of Warriors reserve grade).

To suggest we just let this play out is insanity. If we don’t make changes next year will be even worse


I don’t think anyone is in denial, except you anti Madge brigade, if you can’t see that the players we have are not putting in then no one can help you.

Thompson wants out of the dogs and Tigers and Cowboys seem the only logical choice. Benefit for us is doesn't need to shift too far from where he is. Cowboys only a casual interest with no offer on the table.

It coincides with madge saying we need a top class prop. That can’t be a coincidence .

I actually agree with this . But I’m not In the majority , and whether he is that player or not , he carries the “marquee” player tag. We need to make stepping stones and I don’t think signing him , with my previous post about salary cap management , will hamper us in the future . But it could begin enough of a perception shift that enables us to buy that potential true marquee on a few years time .

What do you do though ? There’s never been less talent to go around . Is it because of bad development, a change in society towards rugby league , no investment in the right areas , or just simply nepotism , at key strategic points in a players development .
I have no idea , but no one in the last 2 years that’s come on the market not named Lattrell Mitchell , would have moved the needle at all, and most would have put us back a few years .

I’ve seen rebuilds in a variety of sports , and most look exactly like this , in actuality , way worse . They’re usually out the back of the league getting lapped by the next best team.

It’s not justification to acknowledge that development takes time . Ideally you want what the storm , panthers , Tampa bay rays , Oakland As , type perpetual development cycles , where when a guy gets too expensive , you can ship him off , because there’s 2 ready made kids who will do just as good a job as him, and sometimes better .

That’s the holy grail of franchise building . But its straight difficult to achieve .

The gws giants are building something similar , which is in stark contrast to the suns , who made a me of thier original build .
This is extremely key , if you’re a team with lower finances / status , or infrastructure ( storm) .

I don't believe marquee players are required. If we could get marquee players that would be awesome but I don't think we need them plus the risk is that we pay marquee dollars but get average first graders.

We do need 3-5 quality NRL players though and they have to be better than Ken M for instance. I'm not stating Ken M is a bad player. He has been great for us. It's just that we need a massive injection of quality players.

I agree with this.. He is the player that we needed. He is a top 5 player in the comp who has an impact.

The only solution to this problem to me is continuing playing moneyball with a focus on talented players. That means junior or development players like Stef, Blore and Laurie.

I'd be more inclined to go hard at guys like Burton.

Perhaps you should objectively watch the games rather than just believe all the rubbish the club is telling you. Madge is toast, I’d be surprised if he’s here for next season.

Yea , players don’t leave thier club , unless they are going to something that seems familiar . We had JAC , we just wouldn’t trade Talau . Which in terms of value , I get it . He still could be anything , and a strike centre/ edge backrower is infinitely more valuable than an undersized , fast winger . Look at the storm , they churn through wingers at a rate of knots , and always seem to produce stars.
It begs the question of what his perceived value is and what it actually is .
On the face if it though , it was a mistake .
TPJ is meh , arrow is meh , and we had to pay 800k plus for IMO a bench player , and a lazy strike middle , with a bad attitude .
Mitchell , like all Koori kids from nsw , went to south’s . Once again , something familiar.

We ARE NOT going to sign elite players until we grow the kids into a force .
Also Lomax signed for way overs IMO at the time with st George .

This is the answer to the question , something that footy “experts” neglect to acknowledge or understand

This is year 2 of the real rebuild . Not the bull crap , Taylor ,cleary one where they sign over hill players to try and squeeze out an 8th place , but the real one where we suck for a few years, get the best juniors we can find , and put smart , hard working older guys around them to grow the culture .
Even if they suck like Tamou.
