What is the max you would offer Galvin in this market that you guys think is fair?
I seriously am stumped, myself I can't answer it. We will be signing on potential, the potential is huge, but it's still unrealised. What would it take for both you guys to walk away?

I say about _$10 per week and all the MacDonald he can eat , but been serious, not sure what he is on now , would up his wages to $600,00 for the rest of this season and $650,000 for next year , if he resigns this year maybe $700,000 to $800,000 , it’s just so hard to put a price on a kid with just one year under his belt

I’m not sure what all of the hype is about Galvin and his contract or him walking away (in 2027 mind you). He is a 19-year-old and although he made a significant impact on a wooden spoon team in his debut NRL season he is far from the finished product and frankly hasn’t delivered enough to be rewarded with the $ being spoken about.

Galvin has shown that he has creativity, a strong running game and is very composed for a player of his age. He is also willing to take a chance and is not rocked by making mistakes. His work ethic and fitness set him apart from the pack. However, he is not consistent in defence and he also isn’t quick off the mark in attack so a couple of glaring shortfalls. This is compounded by the fact that he is 193cm tall but running around at 85 kegs; that is very light for his height.

Right up his clacker is Latu F. While injured most of 24 he also has wraps on him. He is running around at 182cm and 90 kegs and in his limited exposure at NRL level has shown that he is also composed and has a good passing game. While he hasn’t demonstrated a strong running game, potentially due to injury, his performances at the top level have been excellent for his age. He has demonstrated more sting in defence than Galvin as well, but to be fair it has been in short stints.

For me it is way too early to be offering the Galvin a massive contract based on potential. No doubt we should upgrade him in an effort to keep him here, but not at the expense of unbalancing the cap and not tied to any guarantee that he will be the 5/8 for the foreseeable future. No doubt he is a talent; but based on his body shape, lack of speed off the mark and physical endurance he is, in my opinion, better suited to being developed as a 13. Sure, let him play 5/8 until he fills out or Latu F unseats him but no need to go overboard.

If we are looking towards the future and team dynamics – replacing Bird with Galvin, and having Latu F and Romey in the halves makes sense.

I suppose we get to compare him to a million dollar guy this season. See if there's a difference...

John Bateman has spoken for the first time since turning his back on Wests Tigers to join the Cowboys, insisting he is determined to see out his two-year deal.
The English international swapped Northern England for North Queensland in December after the Tigers granted him an early release – the second time Bateman has left an NRL club ahead of schedule to return to his homeland.

But the 31-year-old said he was “100 per cent” committed to seeing out his new contract.

“I’ll be here for the full duration, don’t you worry about that,” Bateman said.

“When I went to Canberra I was pretty fresh coming over here, no one knowing me.

“I was pretty fresh and just wanted to get my foot in the door, really, but I’ve been around a while now, obviously played a few years over here so I’m really settled in and I’m looking forward to it.”

Bateman has drawn tremendous praise from Cowboys staff for his impressive pre-season, labelling the Bradford product an unreal talent.

He conceded his two pre-seasons at Wests had not been up to scratch before declaring this had been his best in recent memory thanks to better preparation.

“I think it was just that I turned up fit, to be fair. The last couple of years I probably haven’t been fit,” Bateman said.

“When I signed for Tigers the first year I came late, obviously came (around) February, and last year I had an injury, I had my ankle (operated) on.

“So it was just coming in and getting some good reps in. It’s probably the best pre-season I’ve had in a couple of years.”

Bateman was originally signed to cover the backrow and middle, but with Heilum Luki suffering a season-ending knee injury he is shaping as a full-time edge forward.

Bateman has amassed 285 games of first grade rugby league – 219 in England and 66 in the NRL – as well as 30 internationals for England and Great Britain.

The star backrower said he was drawn to the Cowboys during early negotiations in part due to the club’s lack of scrutiny from media outlets in comparison to the Sydney market.

“Talking to the club early doors, I think it was just the way the club went about it,” Bateman said.
“There was nothing in the media, (it was) pretty quiet, came out of nowhere a little bit, and I probably just respect the club (and) the way they went about the business.

“Big decision, obviously, and talking to the coaching staff (Impressed me). So that was how I made my decision.”

The Cowboys play their first trial match against the Dolphins on February 14 in Cairns.

its a catch 22 isn't it - we can hold off for a few months with our offer and see how he goes. The problem with that is if he is going gangbusters we will probably have to up our offer significantly and he is also more likely going to test the market first. On the other hand if he gets the dreaded second year syndrome we can probably extend him at a reasonable amount and hope he kicks on.

He's one of those guys every team needs just a middle defensive workhorse, doesn't bust the line but takes a hit up to give the lads a break, doesn't rattle bones on tackles but makes his tackles, isn't the quickest but hardly misses a tackle. He is just super reliable, he won't win you a game but I can't really remember him costing us one either. Every team needs a Twal to fill a gap in their line somewhere.

I hope he is sweating his arse off and has no air con!

A few players in the game seem to get lost amongst the hype and scrutiny and it affects their game.

I think he's struggling with that. Not sure big $$ on him is worth the risk along with moving him down to Sydney.
