It's tough.

The more I see all the horse trading that goes on, the more I think the contract length doesn't really matter...if they want to get out, they can get out.

Having a 2 year plus get out clauses doesn't change much, but avoids the inevitable blow up and media circus that comes with it.

If the player is happy, they'll stay. If not, they would have agitated anyway.

The big players have the leverage and the market dictates the terms they can negotiate.

Melbourne, Roosters etc. Are able to keep players even on unders. We can joke about salary cap rorting, but no amount of money would keep you at a club if it wasn't a great place to turn up each day.
There’s only 1 premier each year and a lot of players aren’t “happy” unless they have a chance at it. Having a salary cap only disadvantages the weaker teams in this regard.
